Can anyone recommend somewhere in Sheffield to take a 4 week old Toshiba L300 Laptop to get a new screen fitted. ( Gutted :cry:). We got it from E-buyer and they aren't interested in accidental damage returns and I'm sure if I sent it back to Toshiba it will cost about the same as a new laptop.

You cant repair them if the screen has actually leaked / cracked. I have a brand new toshiba screen, I shall see what model it's for later, pm me after 5 to remind me!

Opps, just read the post properly! I can fit you a new screen but the screen will cost about £250!

If you need a price for the screen ring servicesource.co.uk

If you dropped it in your house, claim on your contents insurance (depending on policy).

If you paid by credit card, some have accidental damage cover for 90 days (Barclaycard for example), claim on that.

I have called servicesource for you and they don't have and L300 parts list as it's too new! You need to take the screen plasticsapart and get the Toshiba part number from the back of the screen.

Or just buy a new one!

yeap check ebay for spares or repairs.
Replacing the screen isnt that difficult, honest. It usually involves removing some screws, disconnecting two cables, swapping the screen over and reassembling.

It's not an L300 but you get the idea...

alternatively theres a guy on ebay selling the screens at £89 + £15 to fit it... assuming you dont fancy doing it yourself. I'd imagine you'd have pay p&p too.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! Another question - My friends Toshiba laptop is a Satellite Pro L40 and it has a soft plasticy type screen! Would one of those be compatible with my machine? I wouldn't want another accident with another glass screen if I could avoid it by having a plasticy one fitted instead. ( Sorry - don't know correct technical name for this type of screen! )

Going a bit off subject my laptop died and I have some files on it for work etc that I need, I have not backed up as it was only recently reformatted. Does anyone know of a place other than pc world that might be able to recover them for me.

The "official" tosh laptop repair place is next to spearmint rhinos, same road as the student union/ opposite workstation. unfortunately no idea of name.

iansheff, if you don't want your laptop, you can take out hard drive and get a cable or gizmo from maplins to convert it to external device to read from another pc.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=2.5%20inch%20to%20usb&source=15&SD=Y

I did something similar when son's pc died with coursework not backed up. If you are more of a techie you can get a cable to convert to a secondary drive internally in an ordinary pc but you have to understand how to set up hdd slaves and I don't tend to want to run risk of knackering the working pc.

Getting a company to recover files is ££££

I can give it a go for you, if it works you can make a contribution to my carpet fund!

Or you can paint some of my attic while i recover files..

They are usually pretty model specific, I doubt it will work. £90 for a screen is cheap, I can fit it for a smaller fee than that Toshiba place. (Our engineers used to fix all Toshiba laptops) When you say it has a soft plasticy screen it just means that it does not have the anti glare / reflective front, the soft screens are easier to damage!

Thanks for the information I asked at PC World when I got a new laptop and they say they can recover folders and documents that is about £30 but to retrieve everything on it their price list says £99.99. I will call in Maplins and see what they say thanks for the help.

I would recommend Sheffield Computer Services on Taplin Road. I've used them a few times, they are good value and really friendly. They will happily give you a quote and they will shop around to try and get the best price for a screen. Phone number - 2819333

As I mentioned to Kelly I would recommend Sheffield Computer Services (phone number on previous post). They recovered a load of stuff for me when my last computer died. They will give you a quote before doing any work. Can't remember price I paid but it wasn't much and they retrieved everything.

If you do take it to PC World, get a written quote for that price - as you say, list price is £99.99 and that's exactly what my Sister-in-Law paid at PC World (London) for file recovery from a borked HDD
