View Full Version : Can anyone help shania???
on bank holiday monday our poodle shania was accidently hit in the head with a cricket bat resulting in serious life threatening injuries,
however, the little fighter that she is, she has managed to pull through although she is now blind and is certainly not out of the woods yet she is alive.
i collected her from the vets about a hour ago and am desperate for a crate to borrow for a few weeks so she can recuperate.
i would have gone out and bought one but the vet bills have been astronomical and it has only been two days into her treatment, she is going to need loads more vetinery treatment and i just cannot afford to buy one, so if anyone has a dog crate they can loan to me for a couple of weeks please can you call 07948 316381.
thnks so much for any help
hugs from shania n her mommie:)
Moonbird 27-08-2008, 18:58 Awww poor Shania I am so sorry to hear of her accident, thank god that she is pulling through, have they said whether her loss of sight is permanent?
Puppies get everywhere that they shouldn't be and just at the wrong time, I know Pee almost strangled herself in the garden by getting her collar stuck on a twig, my heart almost leapt out of my chest when I saw her, and she has had at least 2 collar related accidents since.
I am sure that someone will be along with a crate soon, I really hope that Shania soon feels better and gets her sight back poor little baby
I might have one - its a 3foot one though. Need to check if daughter uses it in her car anymore.
Don't wait fo rme though if someone comes forward sooner.
SpeedDemon 27-08-2008, 19:26 Whereabouts are you Ruth? I have a crate if you have something to put in the bottom of it as it has no tray. It's a bit rusty as it's been stored outside, but it would do the job. I'm in no major rush to get it back, won't need it for a few months.
edit: I'm presuming it's a small poodle? As it's not a huge crate...
I have one that you could borrow also, like SpeedDemon you would have to put some bedding in it cos Shadow ate the tray, its big enough for a full grown gsd so would be fine for a little puddle. I hope she goes on ok, you must be distraught. I am in Killamarsh.

she is a standard poodle but is only 12 weeks old so is only small.
how she has survived in anyones guess as i saw the accident and thought nothing could get through that.
we are in the beighton area of sheffield. still no crate, she is in a large cardboard box at the minute so still need something for tomorrow and the next few weeks.
the vets dont know if her sight will return as the injuries to her are so servere, they just said be happy she is alive and re assess the situation in a week to see if she has improved as her co ordination is all over the place.
anyone who reads this please send prayers and healing her way as the poor little might has a major battle to fight in the comming months.....
because of the head injury she will never look like a poodle again and it breaks my heart to watch her but she will always be beautiful in my eyes no matter how "odd" she may look:(
pm your address ruth - I've got one the right size for a small dog, and I'm only in Woodhouse

shihtzumad 27-08-2008, 21:32 sending healing thoughts to shania, and i really hope she makes a quick recovery. And please let her sight come back, keep us informed.
Cage delivered
Ruth has strict instructions to yell if she needs any help at all! She's really got her hands full there :(
Well done Strix and the offer of a bigger cage still stands if she needs it in a few weeks time
thank you so much to everyone who has offered to help, especially strix who has been amazing. shania has just got back from the vets and he is very happy with her improvement, she is still blind and only time will tell if her sight will return{but i am convinced she can see, strix thinks so too} she is also still very unsteady on her feet but hopefully because it is neurological rather than medication that makes her unsteady, that too will improve with time...
she looks alot more like a poodle today so when i figure out how to upload pics on here i will put some on to show you all how shes doing.
once again, a massive THANK YOU:D
I hope you got a bit more sleep last night than you did in the previous couple of nights xruthx!
You can't upload pics directly to this forum, but if you have a photobucket account or similar, you can upload to there and post us the link  (remember your album needs to be public for us to be able to see the pics)
aww Hun I hope she recovers well and that the crate helps you to care for her better.
Can I just ask how a baseball bat managed to hit the dog?Poor thing.
Rainrescue 28-08-2008, 16:28 Poor you too - i hope she is ok - what a horrible accident.
Have you tried Arnica drops which should help with the bruising - and maybe some Rhus Tox and Ruta - which are all good for the knocks and strains
Have a look into homeopathy - there may be some remedies which will help with the aftershock of such a knock and some which will help with her sight. I swear by homeopathy and have used it with fantastic results on many things. Also Bach flower remedies - may be too late for the Rescue Remedy - but again - may be some for the after shock.
Thanks Strix for helping out once again

my son was playing with his cricket set in the back garden and i put out shania without thinking, my son dropped the ball to the floor with the intention of hitting it at the wicks but shannie ran for the ball at the same time my lad was swinging the bat and the inevitable happened:(,
i think she is perking up by the hour though and has regained alot of her old self back so fingers crossed:)
SpeedDemon 28-08-2008, 16:42 How is your son doing Ruth? Is the poor lad still traumatised? Glad to hear Shania is perking up.

hi rain,
thanks for the good advice, i have tried her on rescue remedy and hope it will have an effect on her. she is feeling much better today and the vet was so pleased with her that he does not want to see her again for another week so god willing her neurological functions will have improved enough by then to take away the question of wether to have her put to sleep or not...... as it stands now i think shania could cope with her disabilities as she seems to be doing well though still cant quite manage to turn around without stumberling:)

hi speed,
he is alot better now that shan is back with us and he can see for himself that she is doing okay, he still cant bring himself topick her up but i think in time he will.
it was such a massive shock for him as he was the one holding the bat and he keeps getting flashbacks but i think it is natural and will pass:)
still trying to open a photo bucket thingy so i can take some pics of her for you all
SpeedDemon 28-08-2008, 16:47 ah that would be lovely. I guess it must be hard for him to accept that it was purely a terrible accident. Hope he will be ok as well as Shania. x
right i have opened an account on photobucket and have managed to upload pic of shania:){quite pleased with mesen cos im crap at puter stuff}

thnks strix,
i am absolutly convinced she can see us but the vet still seems to think she is blind as there is no reflex or pupil dialation/retraction whaen he shines the torch in her eyes and said dogs make up for loss of sight in other ways lke hearing and smell. only time will tell to what extent she will regain the use of her faculties but for now she is scudding along nicely.
bit concerned as the vet has stopped the pain meds:o:o but she seems to be coping well and is only on the anti flams now.... next major mile stone for her is on monday, then every month after that.
braidy still cannot pick her up as it is too traumatic for him but seeing her home and happy has certainly help the shock.
i dont think he will ever get over it but with time he be able to reduce the flashbacks.
im just so lucky she is alive strix and still thanking my stars that we have your crate.
will give you a ring when i get a spare minute:thumbsup:
Well, you should be able to tell if she's suffering now she's off the pain meds, so don't be worried about taking her back for more if necessary
I hope Braidy's flashbacks stop soon - time and seeing her recovering so quickly will no doubt help :)
I know you've got a lot on your plate, so if that spare minute is difficult to find don't worry ;)
shania is loads better today. she is improving by the hour and ive actually heard her bark for the first time since the accident:D which means she has control over her voicey things.
things are certainly looking up:)
Moonbird 31-08-2008, 13:32 Brilliant news, I am so glad that Shania is starting to pull round, I have a feeling that she will surprise you somehow :)
Oh and by the way she is soooo cute
I forgot to ask how old she is?
Is she only a pup?
pups heal way quicker than older dogs as they are still producing more material to make more dog from!
look at tail docking. If you dock a pup's tail it'll heal like it was never there, but if you dock a dog's tail it leaves an amputation scar
just a quick update, shania had her vets appointment yesterday and is doing really really well:thumbsup:
she has limited response in her right eye so that indicates that her sight will return{although i never thought it went} and she is bouncing along nicely,
a massive thank you to all who spared a thought for her and a a massive believer in possitive thinking in healing i am sure each and everyone of you played a part in her amazing recovery.
no one expected her to make it through the night let alone be back to near normal in just a week so thanks again guys:D
