I have recently started my own shop on ebay but today I got an email from them stating that my sellers policy compliance was FAILING.What this means is basically my ebay shop can be shut down and my business lost.I have a very good rating of around 99% but apparently all it takes is one or two people to not, say, like your dispatch time, the fact you won't dispatch anything until you get the money or rival sellers buying from you then giving you negative feedback, all this can effectively SHUT YOU DOWN because in the eyes of ebay YOU ARE NOT SATISFYING its buyers. This is called "Seller Non-Performance Policy Enforcement" It seems that ebay are cutting their own throats (and other peoples) with this NEW policy. If you are a powerseller you don't have much problem but for someone like me who's starting out you have no chance. If you are a powerseller all you have to do to get rid of your rivals is buy,or get someone else,to buy some small things from a rival, leave negative feedback and in no time that seller is GONE.Their policy is full of flaws.I've looked on forums about this and buyers and sellers are not happy.Sellers for the reasons I have just stated and buyers because less sellers means less choice and potential customers, for instance myself,I used to buy stuff off one particular seller who has now disappeared. There are people I've heard about who have started trading because of the whole credit crunch and were looking to earn some extra money who now have lost there account and who are now in such a state they need to see doctors and the like.I've also read that people in there droves are leaving ebay to trade on other websites such as amazon and ebid. Its no wonder.Anyway my advice is if you are thinking of selling on ebay I would put some very soft shoes on because walking on eggshells isn't the half of it.BE VERY,VERY CAREFUL:(

ebay have got very greedy, there was a thread about ebay on here not so long ago , looks like now they are only interested in the big sellers and i hope they fall flat on their face, i for one wont be selling on there now (i only used to dabble) but they have put their prices up and up and dont seem to want people who only sell small, and people like yourself who have just started out with a new shop dont stand a chancewith the bully boys i hope it works out for you Liquid Pig

This is why I don't sell on eBay, that and the fact that all both times I've ever sold anything on eBay, the items have gotten lost in the post when I sent them to the buyer, and rather than get negative feedback for non-delivery, I've had to refund the payments!

items have gotten lost in the post.........I've had to refund the payments!

Which is exactly what you would have wanted if you were the buyer.

Something getting lost in the post is not Ebay's fault anyway.

I usually have 3500+ adverts on Ebay at any one time, but this week has really peed me off.

Of course you have to refund the payments, you can't take money for items that you don't give to people, that's just stealing never mind ebay.

It's your obligation to send the items by compensated delivery if you don't want to foot the bill on the rare occasions that this happens. Very bad luck having two parcels go missing, Royal Mail have been pretty good lately - although I always send by some form of compensated delivery, which they're probably less likely to lose.

I think people should veto ebay, it's become greedy, corporate and nasty. It used to be fun selling on there, not now, you just become a target.

Depends what you are selling. At the moment there is no other place I could advertise and sell my obscure scientific antiques and expect to get such good worldwide exposure and such good prices.

Having said that, eBay are making it harder for the individual seller such as myself and I expect other sites will soon become better places to sell.

I'm currently keeping an eye on www.fleaglass.com as a place to sell my stuff. Fixed price 99 Pounds for 18 months with no other charges.

I had a small business on ebay for years and at first from 2002-2005 they were fine however (i cant be bothered to into detail) the last coupld of years they are a bunch of muppets, paypal are even worse never ever use them if i was you http://www.paypalsucks.com
They robbed me of a fortune and cost me lots of business through their greed and incompetence i paid roughly 50kin fees over this time on ebay alone and tret me like s***
Paypal can and will rob your money at anytime and there is nothing you can do about it as they are judge jury and excutioner.

I hear now you HAVE to have a paypal account to sell on ebay now !

Avoid them both like the plague mark my words they will screw you soon enough its happened to many many people.

Has anyone thought of creating a Rival to Ebay - but base it locally......so in a way like this forum - it works because its local, and you could include a bit about farmers markets and local food.....any thoughts?

when they are sending people bankrupt

People choose to use EBAY, no-one forces them, if that somehow results in you going bankrupt then perhaps you should have come-up with a better bussiness plan ?

People do CHOOSE to go bankrupt thousands every year pettion for there own bankruptcy, not everyone who is bankrupt are forced to be bankrupt by a company.

I don't think creating a rival and basing it local would work. I sell at lot of stuff on ebay, and in five years I think I have sold no more than 15 things to people in Sheffield.

EBay is nowhere near as good as it used to be - and I am speaking from a Buyer's point of view.

I wouldn't dream of trying to sell on there nowadays.

I've heard that EBay are trying to get rid of individual sellers in preference for Trade sellers, but I don't know how true this is. Personally, I much prefer buying from individuals - that seems much more the spirit that EBay was set up in.

I think EBay has got far too satisfied with itself, and I'm not at all surprised that people are abandoning it for other sites. Good Luck to them

Yep - I did - fully featured FREE local auction website, photo gallery option, the lot.

Nobody uses it though. The Ebay 'pull' is still too strong I suspect :(

THATS not my point.
If people are selling to make a living and are getting into trouble because ebay are changing the "rules" all the time in preference to powersellers and buyers HOW THE HELL ARE THESE PEOPLE SUPPOSED TO GET ON?
What ebay are effectively doing is taking peoples' jobs.
These new rules make it SO BLOODY DIFFICULT to put a step right and if you DON'T your'e business is gone:o

SO TELL ME NICK,DOES THIS SOUND RIGHT TO YOU?
and how long have you worked for ebay:hihi:

Sorry, I still don't think that Ebay chaging their rules would mean someones bussiness would collapse, they should just find a different way to sell their stuff, how would their bussiness have worked before Ebay was invented ?

People use Ebay beacuse it's easier than having their own website etc., Ebay charge for that convenience, if you don't like that them don't use Ebay.

If I personally ran a bussiness through Ebay and it started to get too expensive I'd look into alternatives before I went bankrupt, I wouldn't just carry-on with them and then blame them when I wasn't making any money.

I don't work for EBAY, it's just common sense as far as I see it.

And once again you are missing the point.
The fees HAVE changed but thats not the main gripe.
I shall put this a simply as possible.
If you are a small trader or new one if you get a certain percentage of negative feedback then ebay will CLOSE you down. Its THAT simple.
If you bought something off me and lets say for example I wouldn't dispatch the item until I got payment, you could leave negative feedback. All it takes is 2 or 3 people to do that or ONE person buying 2 or 3 items and your sellers policy compliance status will classed as FAILING.
So in effect to counteract this you will have to send items out without getting paid first. This is just 1 example of how their new system works.
Even if you GIVE something away or give someone money for nothing that person is still able to give you negative feedback.
I have a feedback rating of 530 and my % is 99.something now.
But my policy compliance is now poor because ONE person bought 3 cds from me but left me negative feedback because he didn't recieve them til a week later although I stated it would be up to 10 days delivery. So thats 3 negatives in a month from ONE person.
understand now?

And that's Ebay's fault too is it ?

They can't use Yahoo auctions or one of half a dozen other sites ?
They can't sell their stuff via their own wesite ?
They can't sell it mail order ?
They can't sell at car boot sales ?

And no doubt these people who earn a living from Ebay are declaring their income and paying all the appropriate taxes ?

IanG

perhaps you should have come-up with a better bussiness plan ?

If it was that simple we would all be millionaires wouldnt we ?

what would you say if you hired a shop for example and the rent was £600 a month and then over the space of 2 years the rent went up to £2000 pm.

Its hard enough running your own business without the goalposts being moved every few months.

P.s i never said ebay made ME bankrupt.

Like I said, if you were serious about running your bussiness over the internet you wouldn't rely on Ebay to do it, they could change the rules at any time, you'd set-up your own website.

I wouldn't plan a bussiness round Ebay, it's a mad idea.

WHAT ARE YOU BLITHERING ON ABOUT.No its not ebays "fault" that they have set up business with THEM.
If they entice sellers under certain conditions then when they CHANGE these conditions for the worse people are going to get annoyed.
And to answer your other point, some people have spent years of hard work and expense setting up their ebay business so you think its THAT simple to up and start again.:loopy::loopy::loopy:
