View Full Version : Fern Britton's gastric band - big deal or not?
Ok, i remember the uproar when fern britton admitted she had a gastric band fitted to lose weight. I was at work leafing through some olde mags from then and some recent ones and it got me rethinking the subject. Is the fact she had a gastric band fitted to lose weight such a big deal??
I know a lot of the stories have focussed on her apparently deceptive claims that she lost the weight by diet and excercise- people claiming she lied to a nation etc etc. Am i alone in thinking she should just be applauded for taking some form of positive action and maybe she kept the op a secret because it ws hard enough dealing with what she was doing without being scrutinised by a nation obsessed with celebrity weight fluctuations????
Is she really a liar or just someone who hit her final wall with weightloss and got drastic to feel fantastic?
For me the media could stop parading people's personal lives in front of anybody who doesn't have enough of a life of their own
It worries me when all the sheep want what they think the stars have
I just don't see why she should get so vilified for doing something to help her long term health. I know a very lovely lady who had a band fitted and she didn't take the decision lightly because its such a risky procedure. I can't help but think to go through something like that you have to have hit the bottom in terms of how you feel about your weight.
I just think it's nobody's business but her's and her doctor's, and if people didn't get so damned interested in these things, they wouldn't be worth printing/filming ;)
yeah very true - my post not so helpful either because whilst i agree with her doing whats best for herself i'm still pandering to the publicity machine by bucking against it!!! damned either way
I like fern - there don't seem to be any angles to her, she's just one of those likeable people
her and phil schofield unable to present once they get a fit of the giggles is always fun to watch :D
i know!!! There's something so much more watchable about them because they are able to end up laughing so hard they can't actually deliver the script!! much better than richard and judy.....
Keeping something to yourself is one thing. Lying to the nation that her weight loss was due to exercise and munching Ryvita is another. She is obviously just as greedy when it comes to getting paid by Ryvita as she is when it comes to gorging her piggy face on food. No sympathy.
Her hubands a chef!!! Poor woman couldnt lose weight in the traditional way, so the laccy band was her choice. Bet she hasnt got ryvitas in her cupboard, along side the ginger and garlic!!!
I dont think its a big deal. I think shes great regardless, when she starts laughing and cant stop, its hillarious!!:hihi:

First album was ok, but everything since has been utter ****e. I saw them in the leadmill a couple of years ago in front of 3 men and a dog.

Kristian 27-08-2008, 17:29 I think it's her business, and her business alone.
So she didn't want to confess to 'cheating' after all the years she spent saying how happy she was being a bigger girl. I can understand that, losing face is a difficult thing to do when you're in the public eye.
With hindsight I bet she wishes she'd fronted up to it now.

she should stop taking food of his plate, he is not fat,and if you eat your ryvita with a burger on top with cheese then it will be a bit harder to lose weight

I agree, if she'd said from the start what she was doing, the publicity would have been daunting, no-one in her position is allowed any privacy any more. I'm sure she weighed things up, and I reckon it wasn't an easy decision either way. I don't see it as a crime, and I think some people are too bothered about issues like that, instead of getting on with their own lives.
If she'd fronted up with it she'd have been hung drawn and quartered for making young girls think this was the normal answer to all their problems by winding up splattered all over the front of Heat and Chat - at least this way the message sent out is that it's not that bright an idea, and it's something you shouldn't want to do
precisely. they would have called her all the names under the sun and said she was a bad role model. She chose to keep it to herself and thats her business. I don't feel i've been deceived or affronted by her actions
She's not cheated, the band HELPS, but you've still got to put in some work, I've had the band put in at the Claremont by Mr Ackroyd. it's my money and what better way to use it other than doing something that improves the quality of my life BIG STYLE!! I don't care what people think, I'm chuffed, my life is now amazing,as I'm sure Fern's is now, she should be proud she had the guts to do it.
she should be proud she had the guts to do it.
Just love that turn of phrase! :hihi:

Although I think Fern Cotton needs a band wrapping round her mouth.
