Hello all!
I moved to Sheffield from Manchester last month because my BF got a job here. Since moving Ive registered with the GP and midwife and ive been sent to Jessops. Not being from around here i was wondering if anyone could tell me what the care is like there and what i can expect - have had some previous preg problems.

I was also wondering if there were any mum-to-be groups in the s2 area?

Thank you!

Hi Sasha

You've picked a fabulous place to seek out information. Everyone on here is really friendly and helpful. Together we have a huge wealth of experience which I'm sure you will be able to feed off throughout your pregnancy and beyond.

As far as Jessops goes, as with everywhere, there are good stories and not so good stories. My advice would be to go with your instincts, and ask lots of questions, particularly the "why?" question. Medical professionals will often advise things, and being lay people, we simple take it as it comes, however, they may say things which are simply common myths and misconceptions, like your pelvis is too small, you are too small, your baby is too big... the list goes on. Think about what they say obectively and if you come across them saying anything as a matter of fact when it is not proven to be so, take it with a pinch of salt and ask people on here about it.

If you have had problems with your previous pregnancy it may be worth looking into things remedially this time. Not knowing what the specifics are I can't be specific myself, buy there are loads of professionals out there who can help with all sorts of things, e.g. Osteopathy & Chiropractic treatments can help realign pelvis among other things, homeopathy, aromatherapy... Also if you have issues surrounding birth you may be interested in investigating HypnoBirthing (which I practice) , active birth workshops and yoga.

You may like to think about a homebirth - it is a great way of getting the birth you want, and you are far less likely to have complications doing this. The Sheffield homebirth group hold meetings regularly, in fact there is one tonight. You can meet other mums to be as well as people who have had home births. It is a place to share experiences, ask questions and get to really understand your rights throughout pregnancy. It is okay to come along even if you haven't thought about homebirth before, there are no obligations.

As for mums to be groups in S2... there is bumps & babes in Nether Edge. That might be a bit far though It runs on Tuesday mornings between 10-12 at St Andrews Hall on St Andrews Road. You may like to contact the nearest childrens centre to you, and see what groups they offer. There is Tiddlywinks centre in Arbourthorne 0114 2531377, Wybourn Children's Centre - don't have their number though. check out the Sure Start website on this link http://www.surestart.gov.uk/surestartservices/settings/fundedsettings/index.cfm?region=yh&auth=95

Best wishes with your pregnancy and finding the right things and information for you.
