Did anyone else see the Lancaster flying over Lodge Moor this afternoon. It flew right over my house, quite low as well, once at 13:30 and again at 14:00. Does anyone know if there was a flyover anywhere, maybe down at Ladybower ?

Nice one. By the time I found my camera it was just a dot in the sky.

Something weird and maybe to do with my upbringing, or childhood reading, but I have total respect for the Lancaster and those who had to fly in them as young men.

Every time I see one flying I feel some kind of passion within myself.

I also believe that the 'bouncing bomb' story is something for everyone to be taught.
Draw different conclusions as you feel, but try and understand what people were trying to achieve at that time.

It flew right over my house today but by the time I got my camera it had gone. I thought that the last time it went over there would be no more as they were not able to fly anymore.

It was pure chance when, a few years ago, I took my brother and kids (visiting from London) up to Ladybower and while we were at the dam carpark a Lancaster flew down the valley.

Classic!

For anyone that is particularly interested, it would have been the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. They do a lot of events throughout the year. Some information about them is available on their web site http://www.raf.mod.uk/bbmf/bbmfhome.html.

Unfortunately the dates for the year haven't been put onto the web site at present.

Thanks for the link!

I will keep a close eye on the dates for the memorial flight, my dad is so interested in the lancaster (and the spitfire and many others!!)

My brother treated him to a trip in Just Jane (located at East Kirby) for his 60th birthday. A day he will always remember.

I took my boys to see Just Jane only the other week and they were really interested. I didn't realise how large these planes actually are. Even though i am not old enough to remember the war and the great deeds all the people of this era did for us, the feeling of nostalgia and gratitude you feel when you see these great planes is very over whelming!

Once again thank-you:) :)

Don't know how I new - must have built a model of it as a child:)
Nice to see, very distinctive.

Apparently they had a payload 7 times that of a Flying Fortress. I too had an airfix Lancaster model as a child but the Bristol Beaufort was the first one I built, painted it camouflage green and black. I think the Lancaster was dark blue for some reason.
Will I see any at the Waddington airshow I wonder?

We flew Richard Todd in to East Kirkby yesterday, and did some helicopter pleasure flying.

The Lancaster there is in excellent condition. Although it doesn't fly, they do taxi it out several times over the summer season.

There are only two Lancasters flying - the BBMF one from Coningsby (and it flies rarely these days - they want to keep it going as long as possible).

The BBMF Spitfire and Hurricane came over East Kirkby yesterday, and they have their own Spitfire that they fly regularly.

Pics here:

Yes, you can't help but have tremendous admiration for those who not only flew in these aircraft, but flew all the way to Germany and back while under attack.
The Lanc at East Kirby is well worth seeing, and if it is on one of the days when they do the fast taxi run, it is a thrill to hear those four Merlin engines opened up, it's ear splitting.
The interesting thing about the East Kirby Lanc is it is dedicated to the City of Sheffield, and has the Sheffield coat of arms on the nose, a tribute so I am told to the hammering Sheffield received during the Blitz.

Not a problem! I went for a ride in Just Jane a few years back - a very enjoyable day out. If only they were allowed to take off :)

Just had the incredible pleasure of seeing either a Lancaster or Lincoln Bomber, accompanied by two smaller planes (Spitfires) flying over my home in Lodge Moor.

They flew incredibly low, banked and came back over head before heading off toward Redmires.

Did anyone else see this and is there an anniversary relating to this fly-by?

This happened at 12.30pm 8/8/09.

Yes I saw this too - a fantastic sight and very low too. All too brief though as they disapeared over the trees. Just loooked at the BBMF web site and there is a display at Rhyl today, so they were obviously on their way there. I hope they come back the same way!!

Sorry to boast But, I have a Lancaster fly over my house almost every Saturday in the summer, She belongs to the Canadian War plane herritage museum, I get shivers up and down my spine every time I hear Her, my whole house shakes, She carries passengers and I am saving up to go on Her. I used to go to Finningley every year as a kid hoping to see one, now I can touch one any time I want, the museum is only two or three miles away and I intend to volunteer there when I retire.

Didn't see them but certainly heard them, the windows rattled as they went over. If I'd realised what it was would have made the effort to run outside and take a look :(

Sounds great Magnumguy, it must be in better nick than the one we have left.

She is in fantastic condition, they just had a scare with the props but they scoured the whole of North America and I think they came up with fifteen so they are ok for a while, the whole of this area gave tons of money to buy them. She is very highly regarded by every one around here, as are all of the flying museum pieces, I have been up in a Harvard and am determined to go up in Her.

We saw the Lanc, spit and hurricane today as well, about 12.20ish over Lowedges. Wondered if they did a fly-over of the Norton Show? We see them regularly being airshow anoraks, but it was a lovely treat to see them again, makes all the hairs on the back of your neck stand up! Brings a tear to the eye as well:hihi:

Yes we saw it too, any sound of aeroplane/helicopter in the area sends us rushing outside! We are pretty sure it was a Jet Provost. Not 100% sure, but probably 95% sure.......

Mnay years ago I went to see the Lancaster taxi down and back at Coningsby, what a fab day out!! As the commentator said imagine that noise x36 as they flew out on sorties. The hair on the back of my neck goes up just thinking about it!! As the engines cut, everyone applauded, good job we had on dark glasses....not a dry eye in the place. I have also been fortunate to see the one that flies in Canada, it is awesome. To stand under the bomb doors.........then read about it on the lecturn situated in front of it...then realise I live twenty minutes away from where they practised, it all seemed sureal. I have a friend who lives in Dundas and visit quite often, am off again in May 2010, will make the trip to the Canadian Aviation Heritage Museum, on our way to Niagara Falls, another memorable place to visit. How lucky am I?!!!

I was at Derwent on Thursday and two planes went over, however they went by so quickly (and I wasn't expecting them) that I didn't get chance to see what they were. Once they'd flown over the dam they carried on along the valley for a bit before veering off to the right.

I think it was a demonstration down near derwent although it's a guess. My reasoning is that it flew over my parents house (where I was at the time) followed Rivelin for a while, circled to the right, back over my parents house and down towards Ladybower and Derwent.
I have some photographs and video footage.
I'm gutted that a second after I stopped recording, the fighters broke formation and skewed off at tangents which was wonderful to see.

Pretty accurate account.

My eldest daughter's bedroom window overlooks Hallam Golf Course and beyond toward Bradfield (although if you're my neighbour on Rochester Road could you get that blummin' tree chopped down!) and we got a superb view of these planes.

They headed over us, nearly taking our roof off and flew beyond Rivelin Valley (I'd say toward Loxley). They all banked right and headed back toward our house. Just as I was beginning to worry that they might actual hit us (!!) they banked again (in a circular fashion) and flew over the old Lodge Moor Hospital.

At this point the two smaller aircraft left the larger one and went in their own directions out of my view but heading toward Stanage Edge probably.

Very wonderful and surprisingly emotional.

BBMf were at blackpool 9/8/09 along with the reds and various other kit ... perhaps they flew across to Blackpool on saturday?

Cols
10-08-2009, 13:42
If you go to the BBMF site you can download a detailed spreadsheet of all the flights.

http://www.raf.mod.uk/bbmf/displayinfo

Saturdays flight was a display over Gamston Airport (near Retford) and then onto Rhyl. It's interesting to see the number of events these planes do. Saturday alone shows flyovers at Gamston, Rhyl, Blackpool, Silloth, Dunscore & Morebattle before overnighting at Carlisle. I think what we saw in Sheffield was the circling of the planes for the Gamston event.

On Sunday the Lanc flew over Uppermill so I wouldn't be surprised if it flew over us again on the way back.

No, I'm pretty sure it was Lanc and one spitfire, and one hurricane. Spits and Hurricanes are very similar, an easy way to tell is to look at the undercarriage/wheel section. On spitfires it folds outwards under the wings and the hurricane folds inwards under the fuselage. Not that I'm an anorak or anything........:P

Not sure of flightpath mate but due to significant date today i would say derwent valley could be in with a good chance of a visit from the lanc.
Whenever theres been a flypast over north west way the bbmf usually take either derwent valley way or loxley/bradfield/oughtibridge way to the north west.

I have been fortunate enough to see the flying Lancaster in Canada!!! It is based in the Canadian Aviation Heritage museum On the way to Niagra Falls. It was very moving to stand under those mighty bomb doors, it really is something else to see it at such close quarters, and inparticular reading the details on the lecturn at the front of the aircraft detailing its link with Derwent which is 15 minutes away from where I live!. The next best thing would be to go the Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby. The Lanky only taxis up and down the runway, but the sound of those Merlin engines..........!!! The phone number is 01790 763 207, best to call first to see when the Lnaky will be out, as it is not a weekly event. The place is owned by a man whose brother was killed in the war, it has a NAAFI (!) Chapel, mock up control room etc. It is a good day out.

Lumocolor: if you do go to Canada, get in touch with Canadian Affair, I have just come back, and although I booked last July the flight only cost £260!! This included all taxes, and £28 for reserved seats both ways. I have flown with them twice now, no problems, only a detour coming home because of volcanic ash. Good luck and go for it, you won't regret it!!! Niagra Falls is only a few miles down the road from the museum, and a visit to Niagra-on-the lake is a must too. I have been to the Falls several times and it is truly AWESOME!!! I could watch the water for hours. Keep us posted!!
