View Full Version : Serious test of willpower now!
Well I have decided my next pup will be a mini poodle as opposed to a dally (various reasons) but I also won't be getting it until I have left my mum's home and can raise the puppy exactly how I want to.
Takara's puppyhood had a lack of consistency and little things like not being able to have crates around as mum didn't want them cluttering the place, not being able to ignore attention seeking behaviour because it was mum's house she was spoiling etc. so I decided I would wait til the right time.
On top of that a mini poodle would be able to get through the gaps in our gate and we also have a catflap!
Leaving it another year or so gives me chance to polish up Takara's training before introducing a puppy and also to know I can definitely afford it.
BUT - today a poodle breeder who I know, and her dogs are lovely, has heard about my choice of breed and offered me a free puppy from her latest litter of brown mini pups  ARGH!
Shockingly, my mum was trying to find a way that it would work but I had to put my sensible head on and tell her 'no - not until the time is right'.
Now I can't get puppies off my brain! I have to be strong and wait for the right time!
Dont do it Lotti! i remember how stressed you were with Takara as a pup with everyone in the house not being consistant and spoiling her. All the hard work you were doing was getting spoiled with people undoing it :hihi:
p.s what on earth has happened to your mum? she was so against getting a dog in first place now she cant get enough:hihi::hihi::hihi:

Well good luck with that Lotti :hihi: how high do you rate your chances of staying strong?
sarahknowles 25-08-2008, 11:38 I would have a free puppy!!!!! Yea they are hard work. Mine is just coming up for 1 now so is gettign over the puppy stage, Its sooo annoying when people wont stick to what you want for your pets. You have so made me want a nother puppy now! Oh i found someone to help em with the horse thing. Thanks for your advice yday really helped :)
Moonbird 25-08-2008, 11:46 It is true though that puppies are extremely hard work and mentally exhausting at times, I am afraid that the last ever puppy has crossed my threshold ...this is the last batch :hihi:
...Takara's puppyhood had a lack of inconsistency...
So it was consistant?
:hihi:
You're quite right to hold on and wait for a bit if you can... I gotta do the same and it's not easy! :(
Ooops lol! Lack of consistency - thanks for that
No I'm definitely holding out. Sarah you'd be surprised - one year old really isn't past puppy stage for some dogs. Takara's three and is just coming out of puppyhood!
Moonbird - I will be strong. I think I've managed to put my mum off loads so she wouldn't let me even if I did break! I can't believe she'd consider another puppy but not a blinkin' rat!
Sav - I know - I won't be getting another yet, I have to polish off T's behaviour first and yes, her puppyhood was a nightmare! I'm shocked too that my mum would consider another - I was shocked when she agreed to having Eddy! (It's only because she knows I want to move out soon!)
I think we need to open a book on what breed you're actually going to wind up with for your next dog - it seems to change about once a month!...
... but a poodle?
why a poodle? :?

Why not a poodle?
They are intelligent, a bit naughty, need firm but fair and gentle training, are very sensitive with bags of energy...
Remind you of anyone? :D
They're my type of dog - only smaller and more manageable :D
Plus, if I have a mini poodle, I can have another dally again when Eddy goes (I don't mean to sound like I'm looking forward to that) - in fact with mini poodles and dallies I can have two of each - there's no way I could own four large dogs!
To be fair, I was never really going to have a xoloitzcuintli - I just like them
... or a Vallhund?
... or a beagle? (mind you, I can't fathom why anybody would want one of those  )
Oh Lotti you sound like me, I just held out over a rescue gsd, she was bred by the guide dogs but didn make the grade and went to prison service, her handler retired and so did she (she was only 5) but somehow ended up on the streets.. oh it was so hard, I could have bent husbands ear but the time isnt right for me yet... I know just how you feel. I was really relieved when I found out she had gone to a forever home. I must stop looking the dogs in rescue, theres always one that takes my heart.
Well I spoke to the poodle breeder again who offered me the puppy and she has put me on her waiting list :D
She said if she has a litter coming up when the time is right I'm welcome to have one (again free) because she said I'd 'make a fantastic poodle owner' :D :D Not sure if that's a compliment or not :suspect:
I'm well chuffed because she does all the health tests, raises them in the home, only breeds very occassionally and absolutely adores her dogs! I have to admit one of the reasons I started looking at mini poodles instead of dallies was because I couldn't find a breeder I was that happy with.
Strix - vallhunds, though very lovely, really don't rock my boat I'm afraid - I'm just not that type of gal. And I wrote off the idea of a beagle almost as quickly as I thought of it ;) This dog will be there to aid in or take over Takara's demo dog-ism (depending on how she goes with it) so I kind of need something that will listen to me and not follow it's nose to the next person with treats!
I would love to help a rescue but as bad as I feel about it, this time I'd rather go to a breeder. Eddy was a nightmare when he came from rescue and we were told he was good with other dogs - that's where many of Takara's problems stemmed from (those that developped after Eddy's arrival).
At least when I leave here I can foster for the rescues and I know that this poodle breeder only breeds to a waiting list and has all her puppies back. Her dogs don't throw huge litters either so she doesn't have too many to keep up with!
*Peaches* 26-08-2008, 07:48 oh lotti how lucky are you! I was looking at poodles before the cresties but oh said they're puffy dogs, hmmm and cresties aren't? :hihi:

This dog will be there to aid in or take over Takara's demo dog-ism (depending on how she goes with it) so I kind of need something that will listen to me and not follow it's nose to the next person with treats! Now that's exactly the reason I'd have thought you'd have gone for a breed which other people would view as a 'proper dog' ;)
If you've got a staffy, lab or GSD who's a handful, are you going to take a poodle owning trainer that seriously or are you going to find somebody who demonstrates how to handle a 'dog'
(I'm not going to mention the publicity shots either :P )
I'd still have Takara (hopefully!) and there is no way I'm having another large dog. So that's that!
Plus - for my own enjoyment I would love a poodle.
Lets face it - demo dogs aren't there to just show everyone else up (otherwise I certainly wouldn't use Takara!!) - although I will always use demo dogs I will often use the staffy, lab or GSD to demonstrate things in class too ;)
SpeedDemon 26-08-2008, 21:31 you can borrow my GSD. For a few months if you like, and bring him back fully trained! lol lol :hihi:
 SD - I don't do that kind of training ;) You have to do the hard work! As you will find out mwahaha! (I'm kidding - honestly, it'll be fun :D )
SpeedDemon 26-08-2008, 21:46 Oh that's a shame, but remember the offer is there if you wanna borrow him for a few days / weeks / months....hahahaha
*Peaches* 27-08-2008, 07:50 Lotti, remember the conversation we had about another dal, and toilet training while at the shop...
Erm... guys - where did I ask 'should I get a puppy?'?????
I know that this is the right step and I know that I won't be getting one until the time is right.
And if the time comes and it's not right, I won't do it.
I'm actually quite shocked that the people who have reservations about either my capabilities or breed choice are not people who have not read any of my posts or don't know me or the way I feel about dogs.
It was meant to be a lighthearted thread because I know I want this breed, I know the time's not right and then I get offered the perfect opportunity (a pup from a great breeder who does all health tests, microchips and socialises her pups) when I can't take it.
Nothing more. No advice sought but thanks anyway.
