View Full Version : I thought students were clever?
craigmason 02-05-2005, 11:58 just seen the lunchtime news and saw some students in oxford jumping off a bridge 25ft up into 18inchs of water :loopy: :loopy: resulting in badly broken legs and ankles, chest injuries, serious lacerations and even spinal injuries and i thought that you had to be clever to be a student :hihi: :hihi:
lol i too saw this.
Even though so many had jumped in, people still jumped after. I would have thought they would have seen what was happening infront of them. :hihi:

1Man&hisBMW 02-05-2005, 12:12 Maybe they were doing a test on the effects of jumping off a bridge into 18 inches of water :) make a good dissertation that would....
muddycoffee 02-05-2005, 12:42 You have never had to have been clever to be a student, you just have to be able to pass tests and exams. This lot were abjectly failing one of life's most simple tests.
They are Oxford students also, am I correct :P
sheffieldfox 02-05-2005, 13:44 OBVIOUSLY all students in the country are stupid enough to do this. You make an extremely valid point there. Thanks!
It's Oxford students; on the whole chinless wonders, potential luvvies, dot com millionaires, diplomatic staff and people who will marry and perpetuate more of the same.
Consider it a sort of Darwinian attempt to reduce the threat of this happening again in the future.
Joe :)
Was it not in Oxford about 4 years ago when 1 student fell of a tower crane while drunk?
Sheffette 02-05-2005, 16:00 Jumping into the Cherwell is a long-running Oxford students May Day tradition. Students get sloshed and then jump into the river off Magdalen Bridge.
Of course, they should really have checked the level........

Holy Mary you are a cutural snob of biblical proportions. Why do peeps in this land always think they are better than others? You even celebrate your stupidity!:(
Students are in the process of trying to be clever, they are learning. I'm sure they learnt something from this excercise!

Excuse me - I have 2 University degrees - I don't think that qualifies me as stupid?

You wouldn't think so the number of times they walk out in front of the car on West Street/Glossop Road without looking!!
They might be intellectually clever (?) but they certainly lack common sense. Or is it just that they're so arrogant at that age?

burnttoast 02-05-2005, 18:57 Some of these students grow up to be polititians  Some doctors..just think our lives in there hands:help: :help: :help:::(
having worked for 2 companies which hire a lot of students i have come to realise that they are the most intelligent people in the world but most of them have no common sense what so ever:confused:

What, do your degrees add meaning to your life?
I am sonofman.
Is this how all newcomers are treated on sheffield forum? my father said it would be like this.
I wasn't doubting your intelligence Starsparkle. I was doubting why you thought your degrees were better than the ones these young people have or hope to get.
I don't know how you can equate youthful bravardo with lack of intellect.
That's who the f*** am i

I assure you i'm no troll but you will know this in good time! I don't believe I insulted any one person!
Mod. Note
sonofman - newcomers on to this forum get treated dependent upon how they present themselves and treat existing users.
If you behave like a troll, you'll get treated like one.
Now, if you can all lay off the personal abuse I'll be very grateful.
Joe
According to the girlfriend - most of them were Oxford Brooks people, and that would explain it. One of her friends did it this weekend apparently. :loopy:
I think its just funny I hope to see it on you've been framed or world dumbest video's.
I reckon we could encourage them to do some more stupendous stunts any ideas perhaps free falling from an aeroplane with only a large golfing umbrella??

Hello sonofman, and welcome to the forum. I see you are capable of engaging in debate, and expressing your opinion. I look forward to some interesting posts from you.
However, maybe you should reflect on the fact that you got yourself off to a bad start as a new forummer? Your choice of words, e.g., "cultural snob", "peeps", "celebrate your stupidity" (which you used to launch a personal attack on another poster) is not really acceptable behaviour on the forum. IMO, it demeans you and simply invalidates your posts.
I'm a little surprised that your Dad didn't tell you this.
However, I am sure that with time, and hence experience and maturity, you will gain an understanding of what is regarded as acceptable, as well as unacceptable behaviour on the forum.

Sonofman,
Red Robbo [an admirable, very fairminded cyber-pal of mine] is correct here. If you are courteous, most of the forummers will return your courtesy. Welcome to the forum. By the way, please also believe me when I say that Starsparkle is a poster well worth knowing, and listening to. I genuinely think you have misinterpreted her character. Far from being a 'cultural snob', she is, in my experience, rather modest and self-effacing.
As someone who works in H.E. at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, I can assure Craig [and anyone else for that matter], that there are indeed plenty of 'clever' students around today. I work in a traditional University, and the standard of work in my subjects [Sociology and Psychology] is around the 60% mark. In other words, the average student is good enough to achieve a low '2:1' grade. However, I have taught these subjects in three 'new' Universities, and the standard was much lower. At one institution, the average grade would be around 50%, or a low '2:2' grade. Undoubtedly, with the coming of the 'new' Universities, access to Higher Education has been widened to the point where the only entrance requirement to some 'seats of learning' is consciousness. There are indeed great numbers of slack-jawed oafs and lank-haired social catastrophes hanging around campuses, waiting for the drinking contests to begin. Conversely, there are equal numbers of highly motivated, hard working, intelligent and capable students too. It is the demented bloody fools who jump off bridges and lewdly disport themselves with road cones that tend to make the headlines.

I thought computer games didn't influence people??
This lot will have grown up playing LEMMINGS :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
I'm sure the students studying for a medical, physio, paramedic (diploma) or radiography degree would have had lots of clinical experience in Oxford that day!

I think on the whole your comment has an element of truth to it - think about it this way:
20 years ago a lot less people went to university.
I am lead to beleive it was less expensive then (grants instead of loans, no tutition fees etc), so i don't think it's leap of the imagination to suggest it was only the brightest percentage of the population that went to university (as is possibly the case now), but there are more places now, so therefore the average intelligence would be lower?
Mind you, that's not to suggest intelligence and common sense go hand in hand.
Andy (a student before you ask)

A bit OTT sonofman, but welcome.
I must admit that when I was a student I did some very stupid things. Too much beer can take away the fear!

What's wrong with "peeps"? I've seen it used here many times.
Isn't it simply a Harry Enfield/Stavros reference meaning "people"?
Silly maybe, but not insulting. Or have I missed something?

"Students go to library, one pint then early to bed" never made a good headline, did it?

Thanks Timo, that sounds reasonalbe. You do remind me of a 'carry on' character mind!! :hihi:
KATIEB_23 04-05-2005, 11:50 I would just like to point out that 'common sense' and 'being good at revising for exams' are IN NO WAY RELATED!
I am a living example of this fact.
Sonofman,
I remind you of a 'Carry On' character? Ooh stop messing about! Matron! etc. Who might that be? Dare I even ask?
Not all students are that stupid!
Im a student nurse and theres no way I'd fling myself off a bridge after watching some idiot jump off and break their leg
no matter how much I'd had to drink!
Anyway they were Oxford students so they probably only got into uni coz Daddy bought them a place

What does having a degree got to do with anything? And I'm born and bred from Oxford - moved to Sheffield 18 months ago.

I do have a sense of humour - I was just amazed at your lack of knowledge about real students in Oxford.
The media highlights the apparent good parts of Oxford but what it doesn't do is let any of the bad parts get shown.
Oxford is nothing but a dirty, dark and nasty place to live!
Trust me, I hate it! :D ;)
(Sheffield is much nicer :) )
I think Oxford University is getting a slightly less 'snobbish' image.. although my cousins friend changed from Oxford to Leeds to study medicine because of the 'attitude' she recieved coming from Barnsley!
I can name a few others who are from the North who chose Northern Uni's over Oxford, even after being offered a place to study medicine, I think they felt it was more of an equal oppotunities place, rather than being based on their academic merit.
Oxford is a fabulous city for architecture though.. my mum currently lives in Brackley and its nice just to nip on the park and ride into the city when I'm down to see her!
Regardless of the University, some students will also act like idiots and get themselves injured.
