muddycoffee 01-05-2005, 18:20 Hi sylvia,
when I get problems like this I usually get a new ram stick. They are quite cheap now, but you must get one which is tested and guaranteed to be reliable in your motherboard.
And also you must buy a branded one, my preference is "Crucial"
If you go onto their website you can look up which models they recommend for your motherboard.Crucial Website (http://www.crucial.com/uk)
Windows 98SE is usually extremely reliable and stable.
Hi
I only had a new hard drive. memory. and mother board put in 6 months agao
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Format and Re-install.
You can fanny about for weeks trying to find the problem when all you need to do is the above. If that falls then maybe it's an hardware fault. Try a different stick of mem first, if that doesn't work try a different power supply.
Also try something more stable than Win98se
mr.blaze 04-05-2005, 10:01 Hey, as your processor is an Intel Pentium(r) III; 800EB Mhz I'd suggest installing Windows XP. Life will soon seem a great deal easier without all the stress from 98. You might want to get another stick of RAM though as you only have 128 Meg. Try ebay as your particular memory is cheap as chips these days.
alchresearch 04-05-2005, 10:15 Not sure how many memory slots you have free but I have some 64Mb sticks you can have.
hi J-Blaxe i was told i could not install xp as i didnt have enough ram shame because i bought xpprofessional before i checked if my computer would take it thats life as they say
Hi alchresearch i dont know how many memory slots i have free to be honest dont know much about computers
thanks for your offer

I had XP-Pro running on my old laptop.
The spec was:
P III processor
600Mhz
128MB RAM
It worked fine. A little slow but it worked ;)
alchresearch 07-05-2005, 11:33 Found a review and spec list of the machine here:

As it has onboard video, that will be eating all the memory.
I would assume if it's a compact board with everything on it, there will probably be two memory slots.
I would advise getting at least 512Mb of RAM, probably one stick of 512Mb. Ebuyer has some in for £32 - part number 22918.
Then, stick in your Windows XP CD and install that. Your PC will perform much better.
Let me know if you need further help.

scubatony61 15-05-2005, 06:14 Hi Slyvia
I have been following this thread with interest.
I had exactly ( or similar the screen would freeze crtl + alt + delete would not do anything ) the same problem on my partners machine.
i could not understand what was going on till in the end I found out what the problem was, it turned out to be two problems.
First problem turned out to be I needed to upgrade my power supply and second was the modem had gone faulty.
Look at those and see it that works if not "big hammer" :(
Regarding how much memory follow this
With your mouse go to START > PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > SYSTEM INFORMATION = EVERTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Anything else please repost
Regards
Tony
hi how did you check your power suply for upgrading
sorry i am not good with tec on computers but this is driving me mad
did what you said about start prog acc etc but doesnt tell me what ram i should look to buy looks like I will have to call someone in to try and get it fixed
LordChaverly 15-05-2005, 08:41 I hope this doesn't sound silly, but have you thought of getting a new machine?
I was in a similar situation last year with 98SE and after examining all the options decided it would be better and cheaper in the long run to upgrade to a new system. XP and other programmes like MS Office are so memory hungry these days that you need something powerful and fast to cope with them well. I got a really good system off Ebay.
