View Full Version : Dog owner gets grief for clearing up dog poo!

Mrs Draggle, Myself and the Sis-in-laws went out to Bakewell this afternoon for a walk round and a bite to eat.
Anyway, as we passed a health and fitness centre sort of place, our dog did a poo. As a responsible dog owner, I bagged it up and tied the bag tightly at the neck and went to put the bag in a waste bin outside the fitness centre. Before I could bin it, an attendant came out of the centre and told me I was not allowed to use the bin, that it was a private bin. I asked if he would have preferred that I had left the poo outside the centre on the pavement. He just reiterated that it was a private bin (even though it was on the sidewalk in a public place)
Well I know that dog owners (quite rightly) get grief for not clearing up after their pets, but getting grief for doing so is a bit bloody much!

Opinions on this, please!

Unbelievable! Are you only allowed to put clean rubbish in an outside bin?
Was there a sign saying for private use only?

:loopy:

May I for one, praise you for being a responsible dog owner, there are not many around.

Thanks!
There was no sign saying private bin.
The other thing that is winding me up, I think this place had a swimming pool. If so there is a good chance that is run by the local authority and paid for through council tax, so why should I not use their bin.
Can anyone clarify if this is a public facility? It is in the middle of Bakewell in a pedestrian area.

I've recently seen a sign on the entrance to Hollinsend Park (council) asking you not to put dog pooh in the litter bins.
To be fair they do have one or two of the red dog waste bins there as well.

You could check with the local council on Tuesday morning as to whether it is a public bin or not and, if it is a public bin, you could then make a formal complaint to the health centre.

It sounds as though this "job's worth" has nothing better to do than to harrass innocent passers by....perhaps his boss(es) can find him something constructive to do!

As said earlier, at least you clean up your dog's poo, unlike most other dog owners!

Yes, that sounds like Bakewell Pool and Gym (http://www.derbyshiresport.com/?node=28853) as owned by Derbyshire Dales District Council!

No more private than The Peace Gardens!

Thanks cgksheff. Not like me to complain, but the manager of the centre has been emailed with a complaint and a link to this thread

I'd also like to praise/ thank you for being a responsible dog owner and hope this incident doesn't put you or anyone else off clearing it up. Far too many people still think it's OK to leave dog mess on pavements, roads, parks, etc.

Thanks t020 - no, it won't put me off from clearing up as usual :)

Well as I see it, he was inviting one of two options:
Unwrap offending item and place in doorway (leaving him to clear up)
Unwrap offending article and wearing bag as a glove approach him (silently but purposefully) then place bag & contents in bin
Now then. That didn't take long, did it?

Derbyshire County Council (http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/environment/rubbish_waste/yuk/):
If your dog uses a public area or pavement, always "scoop the poop" using either a designated poop a scoop (available from all Derbyshire Libraries and district council offices), nappy sack or plastic bag - turning it inside out to seal the faeces inside. Either dispose of in a designated dog bin provided by the council, or if unavailable, double wrap and dispose of as normal.

Derbyshire Dales District Council (http://faqs.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/firmstepanon/webconnect.exe/AIPV/Service/?service_id=17538):
The Council has installed litter bins on streets and other public land under its control throughout the district. Litter and bagged dog waste can be put in the bins, which are emptied regularly.

Go for the jugular!:D

I have a dog
I always clean up after him, should he poop elsewhere but my own garden.

i would not have it any other way.

I carry with me, a wadge of nappy sacks (only a quid for 2-300 at the Quid-shop, for crying out loud!) :- even when the dog is not with me, I have them on me. I even hand them out, to other dog owners who "seem to have forgotten theirs" ( ;) ) (coff)

Only a total pig, and pond slime leaves their dog mess in the street, or on parkland where it can be trodden in/ carried into one's house/ cause blindness in children etc.

the number of times that i have got poop on my wheelchair wheels, and /or my hands, by default of it getting on the wheels!

it's just disgusting.

and I agree with Strix.... the miserable git of a jobsworth would have WORN the poop, if it'd have been me.

what is wrong with popping the scooped poop in the nearest bin? Surely this d-q-head could have had enough sense to applaud you being a responsible dog-owner?

Well done...you should've told him where to get off, and ask him what he does with the poo that apparently fills up his mind and falls out of his mouth from time to time.

don,

I have never known a cat do "richard's" the size of a rottweilers' richard's (richard the thirds).

also, cats bury theirs, usually. They don't cr*p in the middle of the path. it's my flower beds thay usually do theirs in.

And I tell you, it's such a pleasant pastime, (NOT!) playing "dodge what the dirty bastages have left in the street *THIS* time, when walking their dog".

i have to drive the chair like I am drunk, weaving from side to side, dodging the dog muck. combined with the fun of "half the causeway blocked because some idle bastages can't be ars*d to bring their wheely bin back onto their property", it's like ski-ing slalom, sometimes.

Does anyone know if you can be fined for putting dog waste (bagged!) in a 'normal' bin?

I've just nearly been fined for not using a red bin to dispose of my dog's waste, which I can't believe. Surely the fact that I have picked it up and disposed of it should be enough and if I can't use a normal bin, why doesn't it say it on them?! Am I missing something? Should I have known this?

cgksheff
05-05-2005, 12:55
Where was this?

Some councils say it should be double-bagged in order to go into a "normal bin". Some don't!

Was this a warden that identified themselves as such?

What's going on?

Draggletail had a problem like this last sunday!

It was in Hillsborough Park. No the guy didn't tell me he was a dog warden, but he was in a white van in the park - which is unusual but I assumed he was a park warden or something. He sat and watched other people for 10 minutes and then drove out of the park.

He drove up to me, told me that I had picked it up correctly, but hadn't disposed of it correctly and if I fetched it out of the bin and put it in a red bin I wouldn't be fined. I looked at him in disbelief and thought I wasn't going to dive in the bin and find my dog bag out from all the rest and told him this. He said he would let me off this time and not to do it again.

I should have asked him for his ID but I was really put out as I couldn't believe it!

cgksheff
05-05-2005, 13:13
I've just got off the phone with the Council (Environmental Services)

If it is securely bagged (preferably double) there is nothing they can do about you putting it in any council bin.
Naturally, it is preferred that you use the red dog bins where available.

It sounds like someone has been over-stepping their authority or having you on.

Write and complain to Environmental Services and copy it to your local Councillor.

Thanks CGKSheff. I emailed them, I'm no good talking to somebody as you can tell from my response to what happened!, to ask them if I could get fined.

But now I know for definate I will write and complain, especially as there are loads of dog owners in the park who never clear up and we are probably one of the very few who do.

Regarding my experience at Bakewell with the Bakewell pool and Gym bin, cgksheff researched the matter and found it is Derbyshire County Council policy that if there are no red dog poo bins available, normal public bins can be used.
I have emailed Ashley Watts the pool manager/ess twice about the matter at

bakewell.swimmingpool@derbyshiredales.gov.uk

But have yet to receive a reply or acknowledgement.
I ain't going to let the matter drop, though.

An update for those of you following this thead from Les Warren, Derbyshire Dales Leisure Officer
les.warren@derbyshiredales.gov.uk

Subject: RE: Complaint regarding public waste bin at Bakewell Pool and Gym

Thank you for your email.

Having spoken to the Manager at Bakewell Swimming Pool, he says that he has not received any emails from you, otherwise he would have replied straight away.

I also understand that the member of staff informed you that there was a bin round the corner designated for dog mess. He did not say that you could not use the bin outside the pool, which as you say is a public bin.

I would, however like to thank you for clearing up after your dog, and disposing of it
Regards, Les Warren
All lies, really.
As for the 'missing emails' - I sent them from different addresses in case the first one went to his junk mail.

The attendant very definitely told us not to use the bin 'cos it was a private bin.

He did NOT direct us to a dog poo bin.

The people who were with me are now going to mail him to say they witnessed this.
I await his reply :heyhey:

Well I've had a few emails to and from the Sheffield Council regarding my incident, where I was asked to take my bagged dog poo from a black bin and place it in red dog waste bin otherwise I would be fined.

I also complained that the officer didn't provide any ID or say who/what he was. The first email said the officer told him that he had done so and implied I was a liar. Which annoyed me.

I only received an apology after my 2nd email, which he obviously didn't really want to give and has done to stop my emails to him. Apparently, because a red bin says "dog waste only" and a black bin says "litter" we should know that dog waste isn't allowed in a litter bin. Well to me, dog waste, is rubbish/litter? I suggested they educate the public by putting signs up on the bins saying "No Dog Waste" and where the nearest dog waste bins are - but they can't do that because they aren't under then department! Surely they could work together with the relevant department?

The thing that angers me the most is that if I had been a man and had two staffies with me, he wouldn't have asked me to stick my hand in the bin. But because I'm female with two muzzled dogs, he felt he could bully me.

One fed up, responsible dog owner.

Different policy in Sheffield, then?
As posted earlier by cgksheff, Derbyshire Dales DC allow public bins to be used for bagged dog poo.

I haven't had an apology from Les Warren, the Leisure Officer at DDDC despite my witnesses emailing him to back up my story.
I have therefore sent a letter detailing the whole thing to
The Chief Executive at DDDC.
We will see.......
