I have 2 compost bins, one of them is absolutely riddled with ants, there are also some winged things that I think are still ants too - is this good for my compost and thereafter the garden?
Hope so as there must be literally millions of them in there!!
Some say that they are beneficial to a heap because their tunnels allow aeration, but they aren't meant to have any detriment to a heap either way.
The "winged things" are probably flying ants which take flight from an existing nest, mate and then, in the Queen's case, start new colonies (The males die having served their purpose :/ ).
You can disturb the heap regularly (i.e fork it) and make sure the heap is active and not too dry, in order to discourage them if you don't like them there.
