Right this is it..

I had to rush off.. so instead of waiting normaly to shut down the computer.. i just pressed the button and holded it for 10 sec to shut it down.

I then turned on again for some reason...

The screen with safemode , start windows normaly, best last best confic what worked, screen came up.
i clicked start normaly... and it got to the loading bit.. were it says windows xp.. and the loading bar below it, then it turns off, and restarts

and the same screen comes on again i clikc safe mode.. and does the same on all options,

WHat is wrong with the comp can any of you tell me?

Is it the power?

thanks

You learned a very important lesson there: Always power down your PC properly. :(

You hard disk will need to be error-checked, but you say you cant boot into safe mode so that wont be so easy.

If you have access to an XP install disk, you can boot up the recovery console and perform a "CHKDSK" on your hard drive.

Sorry (didnt read the post properly, It was 5.30 in the morning though )

Go into safe mode, once in safe mode go into my computer.

on local disk C: icon , right click select properties.

On tools tab, select error checking.

Select check now, make sure you put a tick in both boxes.

Reboot system

It will now go straight into CHKSDK and try to correct errors.

Powering off at button = BAD :-)

Hope this helps

I think you proved that you will lose some stuff if you restart windows. From your problems id say you better of reinstalling windows, disconnect your second drive so your data is untouched.

i always press the power button on xp on all comps in house and it just closes it down as normal (found this out by mistake but it does it on all except 1 xp comp ive tried)
id check all cables and the memory first

Fact that the computer starts and begins to load windows says that a vital windows component is damaged from the shutdown.

I'd either roll it back with a recovery program or if that doesn't work you may have knackered the HDD.

Just a thought, but if you have no access to an XP disk, how are you going to reinstall Windows?

could be but ive never had a comp thats messed up because of being turned of improper and like i said since xp pressing the power button (not holding it down) starts the shut down process exactly the same as going through the start menu and doing it that way
you are probably right but before reinstalling it i personally would check the cables ect

This is actually quite an odd one my friends pc is doing the exact same thing and I'm going have to fix it. So it's either a virus (maybe worth a googling). or is infact to do with not shutting down properly as he never shuts his down properly cause he's a lazy sod.

Lol as far as I'm aware it's not too bad to do, as long as you don't shake the laptop or anything afterwards. As I believe the computer won't have time to park the heads on the HDD properly.

shouldnt make a difference as like i said if you just give the power button a quick press it will shut down as normal including closing all the prgrams and everything else
so the hdd wont have a problem

please note this is just my experience and anybody who tries it does it at their own risk and no claiming off me
but ill still do it with mine because i can never remember the short cuts to shut down and i cant be arsed to go through the start menu

at the startup menu do you have an option that says "disable automatic restart" ?

If you do then select it and wait for the blue screen to come up. you dont need to write the whole lot down, just the actual error about 3 lines down from the top. Post that error in here or google serch it to get an idea, wouldnt surprise me if it is an unmountable boot volume error.

I go with adaline's thought, seems like the ntldr file has been damaged.

Check this out http://dotnetjunkies.com/WebLog/unknownreference/articles/12284.aspx

Well it seems to be a glitch since i pressed the power button and hold for 10 secs to turn it off.

by doing that it caused some files to badly fragment, so evertime i turn on comp it restarts.. because its wanting to find a file what is now damaged.

i managed to retreive some stuff *work* from the hd i placed it in another comp and set it as slave so i could get files from it.

i tried a diffrent hard drive in my comp and put windos on all is ok.. so its defently the Hd..

so now i formate the hd, and put all the stuff back on it what i need :) and also put a better update of windows xp on it ;)

So people turning off your computer by power putton when holding it in for 10 secs really does f**k up your computer... so dont be idle like me and just think aaaaaaaaaaa it will be ok... cos then u may lose 6 years worth of work ;)

Lucky i get 3 years of it back ;)

im glad you got it working again and ill never turn it off holding the power button for 10 secs (im too lazy to hold it for that long) lol
