View Full Version : Graves Park this Bank Holiday d71146 01-05-2005, 07:33 Does anyone know if there are any events taking place at Graves Park this bank holiday weekend. drp215 01-05-2005, 08:06 It's the Highland Fling on BH Mon... http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/parks-woodlands--countryside/events/major-outdoor-events/highland-fling HTH Shiesh 01-05-2005, 18:55 I went today and they were setting stuff up ....I wouldn't wear your best shoes as the park is already waterlogged from the recent heavy rain.....can only get muddier with more visitors tomorrow! Don_Kiddick 01-05-2005, 19:59 http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38635 evildrneil 01-05-2005, 21:24 I'll be breaking the kilt out for this ;) mrsnoo 02-05-2005, 16:21 If you didn't go to Graves park you have missed out on a very enjoyable day. I went with my two grandkiddies and we all enjoyed it plus it was FREE. Why do Hillsbrough park make you pay when this is free? Can't wait till the next event at Graves . Thanks to the forum for letting us know about it. FairyNormal 02-05-2005, 21:30 We also went and had a wonderful day. Loads to see and do and all we spent was bus fare, ice cream money and a ride each for the kids. We came home wet and muddy but happy! playman 03-05-2005, 07:10 We also had a good day, took our white boxer with us and she enjoyed it too, met up with lots of friends and the weather was good too. The sheffield festival of transport is on sunday 26th june 10.30 - 5.00pm free admission £2.00 parking. Next event is the international fun fairs summer show Sat 6th & Sun 7th August Sat 12 noon - 10.00pm Sun 12 noon - 6pm free admission £2.00 parking. Don_Kiddick 03-05-2005, 07:42 I must admit I was a bit disappointed... Maybe I was expecting more from the build up on their website  Mind you I didn't finish work till 3 pm so it was about 3.30 when we arrived... Might have missed a lot :( hj dary 03-05-2005, 16:03 We went too and were very disapointed. My lad was felling a bit hungry so we went to the German Sausage waggon for a hot dog and got two Cumberland ring type thingys and one bottle of pop. Without a hint of a smile on her face the lady asked for £8.50 I almost fell over. Then I realized thats why there was no price list up and also why they were serving, and moving you on very quickly, so you didn't have time to hand it back and complain. Wont go there again!!!! drolnhoj 03-05-2005, 16:28 Originally posted by hj dary We went too and were very disapointed. If it is any consolation, we payed £9 for two hot dogs and a chip butty at one of the other vans. drp215 03-05-2005, 16:58 We had a similar bill for a cheese sandwich, burger and some chips. I've decided maybe having a burger van is the way to make my fortune... anyone got one for sale?! :) drolnhoj 03-05-2005, 17:04 Originally posted by drp215 We had a similar bill for a cheese sandwich, burger and some chips. Bouncy castle and slide - £2 for 5 minutes. drp215 03-05-2005, 19:01 Originally posted by drolnhoj A burger van with a bouncy castle and slide attached and you could probably retire after a couple of years. Bouncy castle and slide - £2 for 5 minutes. I'm there! Though as my OH keeps telling me.. there's no such thing as a quick buck! Pity......... WallBuilder 04-05-2005, 00:14 I trundled over there in my forum tea-shirt and had a good wander around with Max my dog. Enjoyed the doggies on show, the waggiest tail etc. Particularily liked the Kestrel? that decided to make a bid for freedom and just kept flying. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who heard the relief in the handlers voice when the bird decided to come back after all he was running out of things to say, you can only mention thermals so many times. Max wasn't too impressed with the horses and the racket they were making near their horse boxes. The food units had long queues and as I've got friends who own and run a burger unit I knew better than to go and buy anything. To put your unit on the site probably cost £2oo or more hence the extortionate prices as you have to sell a lot or sell a few very expensive burgers just to break even. By the way no-one approached me and claimed to be a forum member although I did talk to three complete strangers, were you one of them I wonder? Strix 04-05-2005, 00:21 Not us WB :shakes: We were hoping to see the dog agility, but my visiting cousin was being mardy, so we had to stay home :( (I love him really ;) ) ormester 06-05-2005, 23:38 internation fun fairs where did you find this out sorry im a fairground fan so very curious usualy very good rides come layout at graves is difficult though WallBuilder 07-05-2005, 21:32 I usually go to the transport show and as there is usually a good selection of old cars it is great fun. The only trouble is a lot of the old classic cars i can remember either owning or seeing in droves on the roads which means I must be getting old, how can a mk 5 cortina be considered old? At the Highland show only saw one person in a green kilt and I distictly remember seeing a white boxer but I still think a lirkinf Sheffield forumer spoke to me as i walked up the ravine, come on own up!!! whiterose 01-05-2006, 19:41 shame about the weather but i thought it was a huge success, even better than last year. the manchester fire service pipe band were amazing, the dog handling was really entertaining (especially that little scooby snack, "molly" who was a riot) and the sausage stall in the main farmers market tent was selling the most dynamite sausages ive eaten since the sausage shop on eccy rd closed down (on the corner of berkeley precinct). btw anyone remember the sausage shop? :) drolnhoj and h j dary: if i were you i would complain to the organisers of the fair about the extortionate takeaway food prices. its against the law not to display prices for a start and all businesses have overheads. one cant use overheads to justify ripping off customers. four quid for a hot dog is bang out of order imho. you can contact the organisers, kevin cheetham and howard simpson through the highland fling site. if you google highland fling sheffield its the first option that comes up. (i cant post links yet till ive made 15 posts, soz!) all in all i thought it was brilliant though :) Silverblade 01-05-2006, 20:23 Am I the only person who dislikes this sort of stuff? Us locals...who live close to the park really love the people who park anywhere without any consideration for others. Not only that the park is made into a car park which then prevents or spoils the grass for many others for a few months after. And before you all get on your high horse.....i'm really fed up with people parking in front of my house and making us push a disabled relative into a very busy main road. But hope you all enjoyed the burger vans! Trever 01-05-2006, 20:46 Over 5 million people went and only 2 toilets were available:loopy: Hot dogs £3 each! Has the world gone mad:hihi: fox20thc 01-05-2006, 20:48 Jam was better. £1 for chips. :D playgirl85 01-05-2006, 20:52 Was This The Sheffield Show ??? scoop 01-05-2006, 20:53 We also had a good day, took our white boxer with us and she enjoyed it too, met up with lots of friends and the weather was good too. I used to live close to it and loved walking there when there was something on (don't get me wrong i loved walking around there anyway) but you should be pleased that you don't have to travel miles for a fun day out, now for me to have a fun day out i spend 2 hours traveling on public transport to come to shows on at Graves Park. It's not like it happens every weekend either! Silverblade 01-05-2006, 21:00 I just wonder under what covenance the council can shut parts of Graves Park and charge for parking when the park was given to the people of Sheffield? But hey.....the burger vans do OK! taxman 01-05-2006, 21:03 I just wonder under what covenance the council can shut parts of Graves Park and charge for parking when the park was given to the people of Sheffield? But hey.....the burger vans do OK! My friends who live near Hillsborough Park and walk through it most days also get peeved when the Mayfest comes to town and the park is ringfenced to allow the overpriced tat to set up camp. playgirl85 01-05-2006, 21:05 Was This The Sheffield Show ??? Anyone ??? :( Silverblade 01-05-2006, 21:09 Anyone ??? :( No The Highland Fling A few cows and burger vans! samsmum 01-05-2006, 21:54 we took our 3 little 'uns and had a whale of a time :) we laughed our heads off at Andre being dragged through the mud by his heffer during the highland cattle show ;) the boys got to stroke the bunnies and guinea pigs at the whirlow farm trust and the nice lady came and told them thier names...:) thankfully it was free....woudlnt have minded paying a couple of quid to park though but we parked carefully and thoughtfully on norton park view. well, we pay our road tax, so unless those roads have become private long may we continue. also got stung by the chippy vans.....£8 for 2 hotdogs and 2 trays of chips. any get hit by the flying hog roast tent?? big gust of wind and whoosh! off it went :) WallBuilder 02-05-2006, 01:57 Some-one's been merging threads but I'd just like to say that I went this year as well [2006] There did seem to be an awful lot of food outlets there [burger vans] and I'm sure that one owner was spotted eyeing up a competitors price list. I didn't bother buying anything from them I prefer the cafe and had a take away coffee at it's normal price. Sniggered at the highland cows taking their handlers for a walk and spent ages with the working horses as I've always liked the bigger horses. The dog handling show was entertaining mostly because one or two of the dogs seem more interested in the audience and any food they were carrying rather than paying attention to their owners. Loads of people milling around and many many dogs for Max to say hello to. Roll on the classic car show which'll probably involve another two or three hour dawdle. oyster 02-05-2006, 02:25 I also hate the way that public parks are often fenced off so people can make a quick buck. They are public parks after all so why should we have to pay to either enter them or park near them. I think if people decide to put events on like these then they should make there money through sponsorship or grant funding and let us enjoy the public space. Did we ask for them to set up stalls and wreak the grass so that the kids can't play football? whiterose 02-05-2006, 10:21 Sniggered at the highland cows taking their handlers for a walk yeah the highland cattle were brill! did you see when two of them started scrapping? beautiful animals and the handlers from the college all seemed lovely too. the whole day was great, apart from, as many people have complained about (but like i said, if you feel that strongly, make an official complaint!) the prices being charged by the burger vans. there are plenty of companies in sheffield doing healthy takeaway food for reasonable prices (like "masterchef" at the bottom of staniforth rd for example). maybe next year companies such as this will be encouraged to stand for the benefit of the show and the general public. drolnhoj 02-05-2006, 10:55 :) drolnhoj and h j dary: if i were you i would complain to the organisers of the fair about the extortionate takeaway food prices. its against the law not to display prices for a start and all businesses have overheads. one cant use overheads to justify ripping off customers. four quid for a hot dog is bang out of order imho. you can contact the organisers, kevin cheetham and howard simpson through the highland fling site. if you google highland fling sheffield its the first option that comes up. Godzilla 02-05-2006, 12:09 I was helping out on the Retired Greyhound trailer and so didn't see much of the other stalls of events. But I had a really nice brie and grape roll ( £3) from the sandwich outlet by the 'bar' trailer, and washed it down with a glass of red wine, also £3. There seemed to be adequate toilets - I didn't see any queuing. Despite the rain showers it was a successful event for us and we had a number of serious enquiries about adopting a retired greyhound. Our next 'out and about' will be at Chatsworth on 20th and 21st May for the Angling Fair, and we will be in Hillsborough for Mayfest on 28th and 29th. |
