I noticed that someone has purchased the old post office building in Fitzallen Square. Does anyone know who has bought this building and what it is going to be used for?

View Full Version : Central Post Office building - What's it going to be used for? Lickszz 01-05-2005, 00:55 I noticed that someone has purchased the old post office building in Fitzallen Square. Does anyone know who has bought this building and what it is going to be used for? Kristian 01-05-2005, 01:30 Whatever it is, I hope any change will be a sympathetic one. It's a lovely old building if you look past the grime. loopy 01-05-2005, 06:32 It is a lovely building but like everything,it will be defaced in some way,,,,just like the Queens Tower,,,,what a shame about that!!! goldenfleece 01-05-2005, 13:26 It is BOUND to end up as a trendy wine bar......must do. AndrewC 01-05-2005, 13:27 It will probably be a mixed use development, along the lines of something similar to the corn exchange in leeds. Yes some trendy wine bars will be included i imagine! I've met one of the developers working on it! Impressed? No? Ok. Captain_Scarlet 01-05-2005, 14:25 Originally posted by goldenfleece It is BOUND to end up as a trendy wine bar......must do. With fake logs, DFS sofas, cream paint and dinosaur eggs ? Kristian 01-05-2005, 14:31 I would have thought it was in the wrong area for a wine bar; can you imagine the pub crawl discussion? :D We'll start at the Market Tavern, call for one in the Cannon, across to the Hen and Chickens, and then over to that new wine bar? It just doesn't sound right to me! ;) Andy 01-05-2005, 15:00 I heard the Home Office were moving in, although that was a while ago and I doubt it's still the case. None the less, somthing needs to be done - that part of town's not great. I can't see the market for a trendy wine bar....I suspect it will become appartments :suspect: 1Man&hisBMW 01-05-2005, 16:32 i reckon a buffet restaurant would be good, parking might be an issue though. different menu in different parts of the building.... :) gemma86 01-05-2005, 16:34 Don't people still work in it? I'm sure I've seen lights on, and if you're on a double decker bus you can see people working inside? Strix 01-05-2005, 19:57 You could ask the agents: http://www.lsh.co.uk/content/front_templates/news/current_news_detail.php?RefNo=997&Page=1&Master=997 Andy 01-05-2005, 21:36 I suggest they turn it into a post office. AndrewC 03-05-2005, 08:46 blimey andy thats a novel idea! the fonz 10-05-2005, 10:48 I thought the Home Office were going somewhere near the Riverside Exchange apartments next to the Irwin Mitchell Offices. I think the idea of a Corn Exhange type development would be a good one. As for the area, I recently attended a meeting with members of Sheffield CC who explained that once the Inner Ring Road is completed the traffic in the area around the Bristol Hotel and Castlegate will decrease greatly and that whole area will be redeveloped. AndrewC 10-05-2005, 12:55 yes fonz, what they really want to do is link castlegate (in particular the new scheme that was approved this week) with victoria quays, They want the area to become a 'middle' market office employment area. Ousetunes 10-05-2005, 13:04 I'm hoping they knock it down and replace it with a building like that one going up in the Peace Gardens, y'know the one that replaced the egg-box and yet which incredibly manages to be even uglier and more boring than the egg-box was. Hats off to our city planners. I had the pleasure of driving past the tool-box that is currently being constructed (or sellotaped, it's probably cheaper) aka Number 1 St. Paul's. A prestigious location, the Heart of The City and you'd think the city's Jewel in the Crown, the showpiece of our rejuvenated city-centre. But no, thanks to our council, we get an absolute pile of Eartha Kitt to look at whilst we eat our Haagen Daas. It'd be funny if it weren't so serious. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Sheffield's answer to The Bullring. Believe me, it'll be pulled down before I leave this planet. Either that or I hope it falls down (when the sellotape loses its stickability). the fonz 10-05-2005, 13:35 You forgot to mention these new office blocks helped to increase the price of office space in the city to new record levels, and that this in turn has brought new jobs into the city centre which can only ever be a good thing for Sheffields economy. I agree they dont look too nice, but how many modern office blocks do? Sheffield answer to the Bullring will be the new retail quarter and even though the plans of that are still a bit sketchy the glazed area loooks pretty impressive. AndrewC 10-05-2005, 13:55 I've said it beofre and i'll say it again - I don't think they are themselves ugly. certainly not as bad as the eggbox. The trouble is a landmark site and an iconic development in terms of sheffields redevelopment should have world class ground breaking architecture. This goes for the 'city lofts' proposal too. The 'flat-pack' construction look of the office blocks suggest to me that these could easily be replaced in the future when a council with some taste and style take over. Or when hell freezes over, whichever is most likely :D |
