View Full Version : Which gas/electric company should I switch to?
Before anyone points me to a comparison website, I've already done the price comparison and discovered that the cheapest suppliers would be British Gas & E-On (they'd both cost about the same for the amount of gas & electric we use).
What I'm looking for is any comments people have about these companies in terms of service etc. Also if anyone has any insider info on whether these companies have already hiked their prices up or if they're likely to be increasing prices in the near future then that'd be gratefully received! It's all well and good looking at comparison websites, but if some companies have already put their prices up and others are intending to soon, that's going to mean the comparison results don't mean much.
Incidentally, I'm currently with Scottish Power and although they're not actually any more expensive, they've made such monumental cock-ups of my gas & electric over the year I've been with them that I really want to change supplier!
I was about to recommmend Scottish Power as we've never had a problem with them. Thing is in this day and age, you'll hear horror stories about all large companies, especially with regard to customer service and support.
To be fair, we've never really pushed the limits with them - all they do is change our direct debit amount every few months and take the money from our account. Pretty simple really, although I'm sure youll get some posts detailing how they and every other company has managed to even mess that up to extreme effect!
Complete-Heat 21-08-2008, 23:04 There is only one way the gas and electricity prices are going to go.....and thats up.
BG were recently critisised for hiking there gas by over 30% but as you will see the others will soon follow. Prices are predicted to go up even further even though the wholesale price of gas has fallen.
BG will still let you 'cap' your current rate but i dont expect this deal to last for long.

Yes, I'm aware of this. All I was asking was if anyone has any comments on the service received by these companies so I can make a decision between companies which are currently offering the same prices.

It's true, but I'm just really fed up with Scottish Power - I applied for an online dual fuel account with them a year ago but they never managed to set me up to sign in online despite numerous phone calls, then I discovered recently that they hadn't even put me on the online tariff but had me on separate gas and down for an electricity pre-payment meter. There isn't even a prepayment meter in the house and as far as I know there never has been!!! They faffed about for 2 months with sorting this out, and then finally admitted that despite several visits over the year from people to read the meter and multiple phone calls from me to give the meter readings when requested, they didn't have a single meter reading for either gas or electric, not even the meter readings I gave on my initial application. It's completely barmy, even the guy in customer services who I was speaking to about it was like "yeah, we've really made a mess of this...". It's sorted now and I reckon I've actually got quite a good deal out of it as they've had to estimate the fuel I've used and I reckon it's a lot less than I've actually used, but I think it's time to move to another company!
We have been with N Power since we moved into our new house nearly two years ago. There have been some billing problems with estimated bills and missing meter readings and it has taken us 6 months to get our direct debit discount added to our bill, however despite this we would still recommend them. Their customer service department do all they can to help and they are always polite. We have found that N Power are the cheapest for our area when you take into account the discounts they offer. They are also one of the two companies not to put up energy prices yet plus you can still get capped prices if you are quick.

I was with NPower before I moved to Scottish Power last year, they were a lot more expensive for me - in the comparison I did recently, their cheapest tariff came up as £80 more than I'm paying now! It all depends on how much fuel you use I guess, since we're both (presumably) in more or less the same area. Thanks anyway!

I just applied to switch over to their online tariff yesterday, I'll let you know how it went, lol

Did that take account of the £80 direct debit discount? We also got a £40 winter gas discount last year. Not sure what it was for but it came in handy. We used the comparison websites but they dont take account of this.
jonesy43 22-08-2008, 14:52 I was speaking to someone socially who works at British Gas call centre. She says the cheapest for both gas and electric is Energy Click 5 with british gas. She wasnt trying to promote them to me or anything as I am already with them,s he just said make sure you are on the cheapest tarriff, which is the one I have mentioned.

Seconded. Though i admit i have been with E-On for the past 2 years due to them ebing the cheapest at the time. Would switch but moving house in 2 months so pointless.
On another note, Npower are a MASSIVE headache. My girlfriends last bill for a month was 412.58.....which was usually 120. One phone call later and they said there had been a "computing error".
What stumps me is her next-door neighbours final bill when she changed suppliers was ALSO 412.58.......odd that.
jonesy43 22-08-2008, 15:26 Oh, was also told by the person I was speaking to if you have any problems with any power companies, mention EnergyWatch to them and they soon cave in sharpish. Apparently they get charged £500 per phone call to Energy watch. Not per query, per call. So if you have to ring Energywatch more than one, the power company gets charged again.
Another thing to watch out for is , if you close your account with British Gas and you are in credit, you only have a very limited amount of time to get your money refunded to you, not sure of how long it is, but its short. By the time British Gas send you the letter that you were in credit, the time has expired. Call engergywatch and they will sort it for you. And BG will get fined £500, so if you ring BG and tell them that, they will refund your money asap.

I threatened NPower with energy watch and my billing was sorted. I have just had my discount added after 6 months of fighting and they have wiped the slate clean so my bill is at zero.
bladesgirl 02-09-2008, 15:40 I would highly recommend Scottish and southern electric, I have found they are much cheaper than others and there customer service is great too. :) I had a lot of problems with N-POWER when I switched from them and kept hasseling me, so I rung Scottish+southern to say what had been happening and they made a few phone calls to N-power and that sorted it.
