Looking at the Sheffield Indexers website it has a brand new GenSearch database.

It is being built up to contain the names and basic details of those people in your family tree who have a Sheffield or Sheffield-related connection, including nearby areas such as Rotherham and Ecclesfield.

People may be interested in the leaflet on Looking for Local and Family History in South Yorkshire: a guide to sources of information, which is available from libraries in the region. It lists all the local history libraries and archives and has a list of useful websites such as the ones mentioned.

Hi Jan, many thanks for the 'tip' but that site is the one that was hijacked from the original Sheffield Indexers and doesnt quite work properly either! The one for any Sheffield researchers to go to is

Please let people make their own decision
The site http://www.sheffieldrecordsonline.org.uk/ works fine,
and has comprehensive records.

Searching for family records is a very interesting hobby, whichever site you use !

I'm sorry but this is utter nonsense on both accounts. The original site was not hijacked but a copy made when one of the original founders got a bit power crazed and shut it down.

Secondly, it works just great, has many more records than the other site you are clearly working for and many more users too.

If you're going to post defamatory material at least get your facts straight in future.

Having used both of these sites, and both of them are excellent, due to a lot of hard work by all concerned, I don't see any merit in anyone trying to discredit either side,
many thanks to ALL the indexers

I have a distant relation called Mary Denton b1805 (Ecclesfield) who married my ggg grandfather John Burkinshaw. Each generation since has had Denton as a christian name, my Dad for one. My mum decided that my brother wouldn't suit being a Denton so she called him Neil Denton Burkinshaw. By doing this broke the family tradition Hope this is useful in some way. Cheers

I have recently been using the Free Yasni Search website and have found a few items on there that were useful in my search for 'lost' rellies.

The latest was an old peoples home site which not only gave details of my ancestor but a photograph also, which was excellent.

If anybody wants to use the site it is at http://www.yasni.co.uk

I must warn users that it does give out loads of stuff and you have to be prepared to wade through a load of stuff not relevant but if you are keen and willing to persevere the results can be excellent, bear in mind it is free.

Good Hunting!

My husbands Grandfather was Maurice Kay born 1874
Brother William " 1877
Sister Rose Ann " 1880
Children of William Bn.1852
and Ann Bn. ?

I am sure that there must have been more children. I could only find the above on the 1881 census, as Rose Ann was born 1880.

Thanks for your reply. Cynthia.

I'm researching my family tree on my mothers side and her grand mother was Ethel Mary Trickett (Dec 1883) who married Ernest Carson (Dec 1882) in 1909.
Her fathers name was William Trickett(1844) who married Mary Kay in Sheffield in 1866.
