View Full Version : My beautiful little cat is about to give birth. HELP
Birth-Peace 30-04-2005, 16:24 My beautiful little girl cat, Olivia, is about to give birth. Im all prepared but have never experienced it first hand.
Is there anyone out there who has experienced cat birth and can give me some advice.
I am sure you cat will know instictly what to do. Just leave her to quietly get on with it on her own. Don't go too far away incase she needs help. Good luck.
your best just leaving her too it but make sure she does not crawl into any space to give birth , some cats hide away and have them
Birth-Peace 30-04-2005, 16:39 Thank you. I'm just being a nervous first time kitten Grandmommy
Applegrim 30-04-2005, 17:05 Some years ago, we took in a stray and it wasn't long before I realised she was having kittens, and never having had kittens, it must rate as one of the best experiences I've had, and wouldn't have missed it for the world. just leave her to it, she'll know just what to do, and a few weeks later our dog used to carry them about in his mouth if their mum was missing, nature at it's best.
I'm in the same position as you Olliekitten in that my cat is about to give birth.
I found this website very informative www.moggies.co.uk - try the online cat guide - it gives advice on the various stages of pregnancy and birth.
Good luck and let me know how you get on!
Hope they're all doing well, Ollie.
Good luck over the next few days
I hope they've all got loving homes lined up ;)
Birth-Peace 30-04-2005, 21:00 Thanks Strix.
They certainly do have loving homes waiting for them.
I'll keep you posted
:-)
Birth-Peace 01-05-2005, 08:46 She is supposed to be giving birth today. Ill let you know what happens x x x
Birth-Peace 01-05-2005, 12:08 No kittens so far. I'm virtually following her around the house. Talk about expectant nervous parents.
Before my cat had her kittens, years ago, she spent a lot of time underneath a shelf in the corner, so I assumed that was where she would give birth. When the big day came, I took the day off work and she actually had her kittens on my lap! The main problem she had was that she was too tired to get the kittens out of their sacs, so I had to do that bit for her:gag:
I can't really remember any useful advice, sorry. Just keep things quiet and calm for her- good luck:thumbsup:
rubydazzler 01-05-2005, 13:41 Many years ago now, we took in a "half grown" cat which actually turned out to be just rather small for a cat AND an expectant mum..
My manager had just walked into my house to deliver some papers and she actually gave birth to her first kitten on his shoe! and then ran away upstairs with the kitten banging on every step (winces at the memory).
She then hid in the bottom of my daughter's wardrobe and gave birth on her spare duvet - three pairs of twins, two black and white, two black with white chests and paws, a ginger tom and a tortie female ...
But the strangest part of this story is that about two mornings later when I went into the garden, there on the wall were three cats - one black and white, one black with white chest and paws and one ginger ...
I'd heard that toms always come back to see the offspring safely born and to nurture the female for the first few days but I always thought it was an old wive's tale.
Truth or fiction? YOU decide :D
and no comments about her being a loose cat ... having three mates!!!
Birth-Peace 02-05-2005, 09:32 I'm now beginning to think that she is never going to give birth.
She is running around all over the place.
muddycoffee 02-05-2005, 10:34 Olliekitten,
don't let her out of the house, my friend's mum had an older heavily pregnant cat who got hit by a car 2 weeks ago, and died. Probably she was not used to her worsened agility.
Birth-Peace 02-05-2005, 12:02 She doesn't go outside. She stays in our sitting room most of the time, or at least has done for the last couple of days.
We let her out in the rest of the house with the other cats for about half an hour to see if she wants some company.
Are there any babies yet?!
Birth-Peace 05-05-2005, 14:45 No babies yet. Im going crazy with anticipation. They were due on Sunday...
I have made her a glorious cardboard nursery for herself and the kittens.
we are taking her to the vet at five to six so I shall let you know what he said.
Fingers crossed
Kristian 05-05-2005, 14:50 I'll have my fingers crossed for her Olliekitten! :) Hope all goes well.
my bestist wishes to you and of course mammy kitty and babies when they decide to pop out :D
when mine had kittens i was in orkney, ( i thort she was due later than she was) dad in law was looking after the house and he rang up to say come home quick you have got triplets. when we got home she was under the table in a box with my best bedding cut up :D
we need some piccys of the babies and mammy
Birth-Peace 05-05-2005, 17:30 There will be lots of pictures as soon as they are born.

Birth-Peace 05-05-2005, 17:43 Oh yes, sorry.
The vet said yep she is pregnant, and she will have them when she is ready!
But she is in very good health, and all should be fine.
cgksheff 05-05-2005, 17:44 Thanks
Birth-Peace 05-05-2005, 19:42 Still no kitten movement.
Hopefully there will be some in the morning x x

Birth-Peace 06-05-2005, 10:37 Still no babies, bless her. i don't know how she is still managing to walk she is sooooooo big.
Fingers crossed for soon, very soon.
I want to meet them. x x
My little cat had kittens a few years ago. She went off into the bottom of my wardrobe and made a nest, she stayed in there for a week or so only nipping out to eat and do her buisness.
Then a week later the kittens came. she did all the work herself the first I knew was the little ginger streak over her belly.
Cats are very good mothers all she will need is some fuss and our vet recomended feeding her the formular milk they give to orphaned kittens to keep her healthy. she really liked it . good luck !!!!
Kristian 06-05-2005, 12:26 Mod note: Some unkind posts removed. This thread is for updates about Ollie's cat, not a place to discuss the merits and pitfalls of cat ownership. Stick to topic please.
rooby_roo 06-05-2005, 12:29 I believe I was contributing to her original question. She has knowingly allowed her cat to become pregnant. Very irresponsible if you ask me. I thought she was looking for a way to correct her mistake.
Birth-Peace 06-05-2005, 13:15 In response to your message Roo, I don't think I am irresponsible at all. Olivia is in great health and I already have more than enough wonderful homes for the kittens when they are ready.
My thanks to Kristian for removing your initial message.
And I dread to think what you were suggesting to 'correct' the situation.
take no notice Ollie folk like that are just nasty, ive put a complaint in about him/her anyway.
back to the important stuff... any babies yet????
Hugs

My sentiments exactly!
Good luck Ollie  I'm sure it's a harrowing time, and the best thing anybody can do is be supportive.
oh wow! Just came onto the topic, and read all the threads, good luck! I wouldn't be able to leave my cat to it I'd be too interested 'Let me see! let me see!'
Definitely post piccies when they're born, my aunt's cat had babies and they were gorgeous! Smudge here (she's sat next to me on my desk) won't get that opportunity I'm afraid, but I suppose it's a good thing as she'd make an absolutely terrible mum!
Good luck! keep us up to date (and thanks to Kristian for removing the post - I don't know what it was, but I was once on a cat forum and there were some horrible things said that were never moderated and it really wasn't nice!)
Lottie
She may need help if it's a large litter cos sometimes cats get too tired to push the last one or two out and they can suffocate. You can help by gently easing them out - but don't pull on them and if she gets stressed you have to stop. (I've watched my auntie do this - she used to breed pedigree cats).
Another useful tip is... try to handle the kittens as little as possible in the first few days - if at all. If they lose their mothers scent from their fur and smell like you instead, she'll reject them and can even kill them cos she won't recognise them.
Good luck and let us know how the little darlings are when they arrive. ahhhhhh.

Hmm, I have similar feelings when I hear about people like you contributing to the human population.
Apologies to the mods for going off track & abusive but meh, it was called for...
Ollie, good luck, one of my friends had 2 cats that both gave birth on the same day, 5 each. She woke up with 3 cats, & went to bed with 13. Hope she pops soon so you can get to sleep.
**edit [looks at cat pic] awwww... :)

Birth-Peace 06-05-2005, 15:00 Still no babies. Thank you to everyone for your kindness. x x x

Birth-Peace 06-05-2005, 20:17 I hope Martha is doing well. Livia is now eating loads and resting loads.
Keep us posted on your Martha.
Lots of love
OllieKitten
Martha was doing the same until today - she seems to be resting more now than eating - wonder if that's a sign???
It's exciting though isn't it??!!!!
We both may have some news by the morning!! xx
Birth-Peace 06-05-2005, 20:21 Fingers crossed.
Really hope all goes well. x x
Cake, perhaps I'll get to see your additions tomorrow then! Hope everything goes well with both Martha and Olivia!
Lottie x
Birth-Peace 07-05-2005, 05:32 Still not a great deal to report. I think that she has had one contraction as she gave a yowl but that was an hour ago and still nothing. But hey it gives me a good chance to clean the house while everyone else is still in bed.
hugs and kisses,
and lots of fingers crossed for kittens
Hope you get to meet your babies today!
Big hugs to Olivia!
any babies yet?..................

Birth-Peace 07-05-2005, 13:34 Hello,
Sorry, still no kittens. I have friends coming over tonight for dinner, and also to see the kittens.... oops.
But Im sure Livia will decide to pop tonight just as we sit down to dinner.
:-)
Come on Livie.
Birth-Peace 07-05-2005, 14:54 No kittens yet, my friends.
But
She has just been sat on my knee, I had my hand on her tummy and I felt a tiny little foot kick.
I am so looking forward to meeting them.

Go have a look x
Gorgeous cats!
No news on Martha - she lying next to me and maowing at the mo - been doing that alot today. She was sat up and trying to clean her belly earlier but lost her balance due to her size!! I really shouldn't have laughed but it was soooooo comical. Bless her.
Birth-Peace 07-05-2005, 16:07 Livvie is definitely near. She is lying on her back under the coffee table and looks in a little discomfort.
We are going to make sure she is not on her own now.
Best wishes for your Martha.
Good luck - hope Olivia's ok.
Keep us posted. xx
I have kittens!!!!
After 4 hours Martha has just given birth to her fifth and final kitten!
The labour was long but she coped brilliantly - unfortunately the first kitten was stillborn which was really sad.
They are all gorgeous - the second one delivered looks just like mum - black with white feet and the other three are pure black.
It was an amazing experience for me - Martha was so calm and instinctive.
They're all resting together now.
Kristian 08-05-2005, 12:06 Lovely to hear you've got to meet the new arrivals Cake, but v. sad that one of them didn't make it. :(
It was awful Kristian - I cried buckets. I just felt so helpless and Martha didn't quite know how to react.
pretty_polly 08-05-2005, 14:01 Congratulations on the new additions!!!!!
Hope mother and kittens are doing well :-0)
Birth-Peace 08-05-2005, 14:34 I'm so pleased for you Martha and Cake, but very sorry about your lost babe.
Livvie is still being stubborn, but I guess she will have to have them some time.
hope to see piccies of your babies soon.
lots of love
Olliekitten and Livia
Birth-Peace 08-05-2005, 18:06 OLivia is having her kittens. There are two so far, one black and one tabby. ITs the most amzing thing in the world.
Im so happy.
But she is having them under the bureau so we cant see exactly what is happening.

How's it going Olliekitten?? Our kittens share the same birthday!!!
Martha is enjoying being a mum - kittens are feeding well and squeaking lots!!
Birth-Peace 08-05-2005, 19:45 Livvie is doing well. I still don't know how many there are....
Will keep you informed.
Glad Martha is doing so well.

Congrats to you both.
Although not a huge lover of cats I did find myself going aaah at the pics. Please if you find homes for them can you make sure its no-one on my estate though cos when my next door neighbours cat had kittens the whole neighbourhood had one - hence my yellow bushes that should be green!!!
Glad all are OK and sos about the one that didn't make it.

I've never seen Squittens that small before. Thanks for sharing them with us Ollie
Poor Olivia looks shattered! But they're well worth it:)
The smallest baby animals I've met before (not counting nursemaiding blackbird chicks) is 5 week old Irish Wolfhounds. They were so tiny, you had no idea they would grow up to be the size of a horse :P
:P wow they are so cute!!!
I want a kitten now hehehe:clap:
PIF_Tails 16-05-2005, 20:48 Congratulations on your kittens and I hope they grow up healthy, strong and loved.
Just a few nice points :-
: Please charge an adoption fee for an kitten being rehomed
Why ? http://www.piftails.com/freeads.html
: Please ask the following questions to potential cat owners and house check the new homes.
http://www.piftails.com/calculatorrehomingquestions.html
: Please blood test the kittens, to see if they are carrying Feline Aids or Leukimea, if they do they will have to be homed as inside only single cats. However if you bloodtested the tom and queen before mating, the kittens will be clear automatically.
: Please get your cat/s spayed very soon, certainly before they go outside again. As they can get pregnant within days of giving birth.
Why ? http://www.whyneuter.com/breeders.html
PS. If anyone needs assistance getting their cat altered I have details of shelters which will help.
Good Luck
missa4377 28-09-2007, 21:33 My cat i think went in to labor two days ago im not sure, she started bleeding a little and the vet said she was in labor..She hasnt had the kittens yet and i dont know if this is normal or what. I have been reading up on cat pregnancy and it says they will stop eating 24 hours bbefore labor, and follow there owner and then make a nest she has done everything but stop eating. does anyone have any advice or waht is expected
If she's been in labour for 2 days then she needs to see a vet as soon as possible. If you could be mistaken then look for the signs of her milk coming in and her pacing about intermittently with bearing down.
If in any doubt please take her to the vets- if she really has been in labour that long then it can be life threatening for her.
missa4377 28-09-2007, 22:38 Well I could very much be mistaken. She isnt showing any signs of disstress she is very active and playing with our other cat, she is eating very well. And there has been no blood. She isnt panting or anything. I think I am just a worrier, but her nipples have become very large, im not sure how to look for milk coming in...
If she's still playing and not going making her nest and keeping your other cat away from it then she's probably not in labour yet then.
You can feel for the milk coming in- the mammary tissue round her nipples starts to swell with milk. It's not much, certainly not as much as later on when she's been feeding them for a while, but it's one of the signs that add in with everything else to say that she's ready.
If she's still got the energy and will to play then maybe she still has some time before delivery.
Stop worrying about her- she'll feel better without you stressing too.
missa4377 28-09-2007, 23:00 Thank you Medusa for your reply. I feel alot better now. I will keep you updated as the process goes along
How cute are they? Especially the tabby ! Well done !
