Earlier on I tried to send an email with attachments (small files) and as soon as I clicked on attach file the whole programme shut down. After a system restore it seemed to work but i've just realised that all the messages i've sent are now stuck in my outbox. All the smtp settings are as they have always been. Any ideas?

I'm not familiar with Windows mail, although I assume it's much like Outlook.
Never touch Microsofts mailing myself, except in the early days.
My advice would be to switch to another e-mail client like Opera mail, integrated into their browser, or Mozilla stand alone Thunderbird.

From the information you give though, it does appear that your attachments see to be the cause of your problem.
Your attachments may seem relatively small, but still some email clients may struggle with attachments over a certain size.
Have you set your E-mail scanner to scan outgoing mail, perhaps that is causing a conflict with your e-mail client, particuarly as larger size emails are being sent out by you.
It could even be you firewall blocking your outgoing e-mail.

If you really can't solve your problem, but still need to get those files to your recipient you could always upload them to a good free file hosting site like MediaFire, after you upload your files, you will be generated a link for your recipient to click on, to acess your files.

I managed to send the emails through another account so it might have been the talktalk server. The attachemnts were notepad files about 1kb so it's not that.

However, i now have 1 email in my outbox that will not send and it wont let me delete either (an unknown error has occured) so every time i close the programme it asks me if i want to send it even though it wont! There are no attachments on this message. In fact, if i open it, the message itself has vanished.
