View Full Version : Whatever happened to Radio Hallam...
goldenfleece 18-10-2003, 09:34 Having returned to Sheffield after 20 years I tuned into what used to be known as Radio Hallam, and had to put uop with this atrocious noise and rabble talking all over the records and shoting down the microphone. It sounded SOOOO amaterish I switiched off...FOR GOOD. TOTAL CRAP!!!!
What happened to all the old Radio Hallam jocks, Ray Stuart, Keith Skues, Kelly Temple, Colin Slade, Johnny Moran, Beverly Chubb, Bill Crozier, Roger Moffat, etc. Dont tell me they all abandoned Sheffield........
Anyone know what happened to the once "Its nice to have a radio station as a friend" station known formerly as Radio Hallam, and not 'Hallam FM'.........the latter is beyond help!!!!!
alchresearch 18-10-2003, 11:03 It's turned into a dire radio station.
I used to like it back in 87-88 when it was part of the "Yorkshire Radio Network" with Viking and Pennine and had DJs like Tim Finlay and James Watt.
ray stuart and roger moffat died quite a while ago colin slade i actually met this bloke once what a ****** beverly chubb where are you dear
In a word - Modernisation.
goldenfleece 19-10-2003, 10:15 RIP Moffat and Stuart, did not know. Heard they had a bit of whisky drinking problem (???) from someone last night in the pub. They apparently got sacked by the new management, and drunk themselves to death, well thats what I heard. Sad...
Got some old cassettes of them both on Radio Hallam in the car from about 25 years ago, much better to listen to than the crap they call Hallam now. Modernisation? You can stick that concept Hallam FM!
Doesnt a lot change in 20 years!!! Everything is different beyond belief........
I went in the YORK in Broomhill last night.....wow, a Scream pub now....actually not too bad but lost all its atmosphere, and also lost Stones bitter as well, but that is no great loss.
Spacehopper 19-10-2003, 10:43 8) Nah Den Ace.......
I used to listen to an irreverant evening show on Radio Hallam, back in the late 70s/early 80s. I could be wrong but I think the presenter was Martin Kelner. A lot of us used to discuss last night's show in the playground.
Remember, this was a time when we only had 3 channels on the telly; and the only thing slightly anarchic on telly was The Kenny Everitt Show and Not The Nine O' Clock News.
Regards,
Spacehopper.
Martin Kelner (http://www.kelner.co.uk)'s just written a book, and he presents a football phone-in on Radio Leeds.
goldenfleece 19-10-2003, 10:49 yes The Martin keller late show, weekdays 10 while midnight it was. he used to read out letters from schoolkids and was a sort of hero, but had a dodgy hair style, but then it was 1980.
Ah, when local radio was actually worth listening to for entertainment value......
We used to listen in 1980/81 and everyone would be talking about it at school about whose letter got ready out, etc and who had met mr kellner in Sainsbury's that weekend, etc.
Groovy...
I think Keith Skues Cardboard Shoes, who was actually one of the very first Radio 1 DJs (apart from Tony Blackburn), is now doing an Alan Partridge as a presenter on BBC Radio Norfolk.
Roger Moffatt did a final few shows on Saturday mornings on BBC Radio Sheffield, mostly recounting the times he had been sacked by the BBC. He was a repected broadcaster with Radio 4 at the peak of his career - and I think was also a co-presenter with Pinky & Perky! I think he sadly ended is days in a bedsit in Broomhill.
Jim Greensmith, former News Editor at Radio Hallam, sadly died only last week.
Other former Hallam DJs/presenters are now with Radio Sheffield (Dean Pepall & Gery Kersey, for example)
goldenfleece 19-10-2003, 21:03 My God, yes I remember now. In 1981 I was in Sheffield and I met Roger in the YORK in Broomhill, he was living in a bedsit there and apparently drinking a crate of whiskey a day. He had a walking stick with a bell on it and all the students loved him.
PaulTansley 20-10-2003, 22:23 Martin Kelner went to Radio 2 and had show in the early hours some years ago, Mike rousse (Roussey)don't know where he went or Kelly Temple.
Temple used to present the oldies show on Thursday night playing music from the 60s and the music just sounded ancient and that was in the mid 70s.
I have to aggree that Hallam has lost its appeal due to the modernisation thing that banned records being played that were more than a couple of years old and lost the older generation of listeners including me who went to Radio 2.
goldenfleece 21-10-2003, 11:59 Wow yes. I even like radio 2 as its more like Radio Hallam USED to be. Its not so much the music is total crap (which it is), HALLAM used to be top 40 based station in the 70's and early 80's before it went middle of the road oldies. Its the DJ's who are so bad I cannot believe it!! They are so poor, just shout down the microphone at you and have no idea about style or subtlety, and always plugging the clubs they have the misfortune to be employed by. Its one huge advert all the time and a total joke!
Martin Kelner has a regular sports column in the Guardian - I think it appears on Fridays. Might not be weekly though.
I used to write in to his show practically every week - my nom de plume was 'Gradgrind Slopweed'. Hilarious, I know. :o
It was a good show though - used to come on at 10pm and I'd get in at least half an hour's whisper-quiet listening under the duvet before nodding off around the time the 'Job Finder' slot came on at half past.
And how's that for a sign of the early eighties times? "Radio Hallam's job finder service, on air every week day at....."
I think Hallam went on the air in Oct 74. Listened to it
all the time back then -seemed to be fewer ads then.
Listened to it a few weeks ago and it only played FOUR
songs in the 25 mins !!! Never listen much
at all now.
Can anyone recall Moffat slagging off ELVIS after he
died ? Some Elvis fans beat him up outside the studio
later that night.
HAPPY DAYS
goldenfleece 21-10-2003, 14:03 Good old Roger was never afraid to speak out on things he didnt like. he slagged off buses all the time, hairdressers, traffic wardens, the Council, Elvis, punk rock....you name it, he slammed it. And he got away with it!!!! can you see a DJ getting away eith saying anything vaguely controversial any more on Hallam FM?
Used to listen to the ray Stuart show in the afternoons, ROUNDABOUT I think it was called, in the days when ALL radio shows had a name and not just a DJ name. The lunchtime show was actually called LUNCH WITH A PUNCH, and everything had a name as in a proper title.
Who the hell are all these morons running Hallam FM? They sound like youth club DJ's gone wrong.....incapable of holding a conversation, just good at shouting down a nightclub mike at the very best. And THAT is NOT talented!!!!
I would be surprised if Hallam FM was the most listened to station in the area these days, like it used to be. I mention the word HALLAM FM and most people cringe or roll about.

Ray Stuart used to drink in the Crospool Tavern. It was the venue of choice for a lot of the Radio hallm crowd, and thus became a bit of a posers pub. Stuart always came across as a bit of a joddrell banker.
Roger Moffat was a brilliant broadcaster of the old school. He taught Wogan the tricks of the trade, and as mentioned in previous posts, died a broken man in a whisky soaked bedsit in broomhill. On the day Elvis died, old Rog went off on one on his morning show, ranting on about all the fuss that was being made over the kings passing. He said radio Hallam had bought the corpse and were having it stuffed so it could stand in the foyer at radio hallams studios to welcome visitors. A group of Sheffield teds took exeption to this and collared him as he left the studio. Gave him a right good hiding. Must have been a hell of a scrap. 4 big teds against an old man with a walking stick.....I hope their nobs drop off.
annelouise 03-09-2004, 14:52 Remember him? I went out with him in the 1970s - 1977/78.
Wish I hadn't ...............
He is an MBE now by all accounts.
craigmason 02-10-2004, 10:24 thers's nowt wrong with hallam fm its a great radio station :headbang:
bostonaire 02-10-2004, 11:12 once came to our house when i was a kid cos my brother had been on his night show playing a tune through his bicycle handle bars!!!! what was all that about?? lol
It's Hallams 30th Birthday,I used to live across the road from Ray Stuart,he was a big bloke ,used to talk for ages with all the kids in the area,he was a smashing fella sad to hear he passed away some time ago.
Mojo, re the hilarious and sadly missed Roger Moffatt; in his pre-Hallam days, didn't he get the boot from BBC Radio for giving out a false gale warning?! I agree with your comments, by the way. Some dreadful people just can't take a joke.
craigmason 03-10-2004, 07:36 the best thing on hallam fm is phoneboy's show in the evenings he is really funny :heyhey:
redlionblade 17-11-2004, 15:36 Martin Kelner sometimes does Look Leeds (sorry I meant Look North) on a Saturday.

Don't forget that everyone who phones in is called 'mate'. As I've posted elsewhere Radio Hallam, or to give it its modern tag Hallam FM is a joke, fake radio at its worst.
It's adverts based around the music, not the other way round and it's just awful. The jingles are really hard on the ears, it's actually painful. And what really gets on my threepenny bits is that awful quasi-american accent they use, on jingles and adverts.
And the presenters actually think they're famous!!!!!
I recon Hallam is one of the very best stations around. To the best of my knowledge it is number one in its market which is pretty damm good these days during the advent of DAB, Sky, etc and so much more local and national choice.
The breakfast show one a Gold award at the New York radio awards (the Radio Oscars) and John Harrison has a huge local following. They have really built that show up into something special over the last few years. Replacing Daryl Denham was a hell of a job, but John's show is really good.
Matt Mackay is one of the best music presenters around. Matt Foister and Emma Wasden are so much better and easier to listen to that the awful boring Dave Bethal was. Phoneboy is one hell of a tallent and I think Radio 1 looms for him, he is so different and brilliant at what he does.
Now Nick at night has really bedded in, Sheffield has a really strong talkshow that seems to have a hell of a lot of people listening even if they sometimes come on here and slag of Nick for something he has said. We need new speach broadcasters, we can reley on people like Scottie forever; good as he was on Hallam.
James Cussak is also bearly 18 and he is also one hell of a rising star. Anthony Gay who used to present for many years on Hallam who as programme director built up the station in to the RAJAR success it is today, was poached by EMAP flagship sister station Key 103 to do the same there. Same with former managing director Gus MacKenzie who now is Key 103/Magic 1152 MD. Former breakfast show producer Sean Gibson also now produces EMAP's flagship breakfast show 'Mike Toolan in the Morning' on Key 103.
Hallam FM is great station - just listen to some of the networked and syndicated rubbish down south, and then you'll see. It has a huge connection with its target audience, but its not the target audience of the 70's or 80's which is why i think so many people comne on here and slag it off. Just accept it is a fine quality, local product, and its one of the best things made in Sheffield in my view and one to be proud of.
Just to clarify, I dont work for EMAP or Hallam FM, im just a listener.
butch1954uk 25-01-2005, 15:16 am i right in thinking scotty McClue got hallam fined for sommat he said on air?
Don_Kiddick 26-01-2005, 06:17 I too stopped listening to Radio Hallam when the Late Great Martin kelner left.
I catch him now from time-to-time on BBC Radio Sheffield (possibly linked with Leeds broadcasts). He still does funny voices & plays bits of comedy tracks.
I recall the Dodworth Dopplegagnger,
Majick at Midnight (3 songs back-to-back), ahh the memories.
Maybe Hallam FM is crap these days because we are all nostalgia fiends & can't face changes?
Maybe it's a sign of getting older?
I'm a Classic FM buff now (myself:thumbsup: )
I wonder if the kids of today, who love Hallam FM the way it is now, will be having this very same conversation in 25 years time?
Dean Peppall used to be a French teacher at Newfield School. He looked like a tall Roy Wood and drove a sports car.
goldenfleece 26-01-2005, 16:48 Its not the music thatmakes HALLAM FM painful to listen to, but I must agree with some it tends to be the same 5 records in constant rotation. No, take away the music and consider the DJ's......if you tape 3 hrs of Hallam FM, edit out the music and just listen to the idiots who present on it you will see what I mean. As mentioned above, all they do is plug nightclubs where they work.......its NOT subtle....its too much in yer face shoutng down the microphone Unbearable......
Say what you like about winning God knows what awards, its unprofessional and very amateurish to listen to, as compared to its sheer class and professionalism up to around 15 years ago when it lost its independance. A Radio presenter should be coherent, and not pluging his nightclub spot every 5 minutes and shouting off about how many pints of lager him and his mates knocked back: they are VERY bad example to be setting others.
bigdave1 04-02-2005, 21:09 A little bit of nostalgia ...
Remember these little bits of radio brilliance ?

Do you think it was based on Minder's theme tune? Oh eck, it sounds more like Chas and Dave now! This is really FLUFFY. You could get wrapped up in this it's that COSY.
Listen and weep "Hallam FM". This is - admittedly in a sad sense - fantastic!
Thanks for this. 'Hallaaaaam Top Forrrrttyyyy'!!!!
hallam adverts were spot on..fossit and thorn was always on,pa jewlry and with a young lad shouting "MR HODGKISS MR HODGKISS and he replied "wots up naah lad" can't remember what thead was for though.
bigdave1 08-02-2005, 12:37 I'll start to dig some more stuff out - I do know that I have a couple of old ad's somewhere.
I do know that I've got the Towngate Motors , Rackhams , Arnold Laver and TCH commercials, so I'll find those out for you....

Yeh, nice one Kirky - I clearly remember that Mr Hodgkiss ad! What about the one for Roxy Nightclub, 'Is that alright for yers?'
I've forgotten the chap's name, but he died really young from a heart-attack.
I also recall the Fletchers ad: Good for you, good for me; Don't wait till tomorrow, fetch yourself a Fletcher's loaf.
I'm sure if I sat in a darkened room a whole plethora of ads would spring to mind, The Moor the Merrier etc!!
Don't if I 'm the only one but what always used to p*** me of about the early days of Radio Hallam was that it proffessed to be such a local treasure but most of the presenters couldn't even be bothered to learn the correct pronunciation of the local areas.
They would be always coming out withe things like the Why- born estate, Bow Cheef, Green Hill, Darn Hall.
Don't know if its still the same what I've heard of it still sounds like patronising crap.

the bloke was called barry noble,i'm sure it still says barry nobles roxy and the front wall.
This thread really brings back memories.
I remember Hallam having a stand at the Sheffield show when it was at Hillsborough. (it used to be really busy then)
And whats worse I remember seeing Chas and Dave who were (I think) special guests one year.
Remember those Radio Hallam stickers you used to see everywhere?
herbiegrass 19-03-2005, 20:34 :gag: Hallam only has nine records in it's collection, you'd be far better off listening to MAGIC AM :heyhey:
time for a song,
whether you live in sheffield or on the yorkshire moors
you can be sure that we are your's ANYTIME,
and if you live in rotherham or on the river don
as far as we're conscerned your number one ANYTIME.

was his show on in 83 or something ? freddie j allen was always one of my faves on there along with amanda charlsworth
wonder what happend to those 2
Ousetunes 21-03-2005, 07:58 Freddie J Allen did his Revived 45 Show on, I think, a Friday evening around 82/83. He was really good. Didn't he use Side Saddle (Russ Conway)as his theme tune?
I also recall listening to Diana Luke on a Sunday night around 1988 and she used to blow kisses to her listeners - 'and a big mmmmooooiiiii to Dave in Broomhill'. She's still on air, but I can't remember where, Minster FM of something, doesn't sound any older.
Another ad that I recall from Christmas 1984 was the TDK video cassette one, which, sung as a choral hymn seemed to go on forever: 'TeeeeeDeeeeKaaaaay, TeeeeDeeeeKaaaaay'. It was out the same time the Toy Dolls released their mega version of Nellie The Elephant.
Incidentally, who was the Asian guy who did a Sunday morning show (and possibly a Saturday)? He was superb, but I can't for the life of me remember his name. We used to have him on in the car on our way to and from Heeley Swimming Baths in 1981.
Was it Ali someone, or someone Ali?
You are thinking of Kelly Temple.
goldenfleece 23-03-2005, 07:52 Talking of old Radio Hallam just found a cassette in the attic with bits of a Ray Stuart sunday morning Hallam show, dating from Summer 78 at a guess as it features Dreadlock Holiday by 10cc, Grease soundtrack music, and various other SUmmer 78 tracks. What a gem.........those jingles.........so cool....
I was brought up in Nottinghamshire and in the very early days of Radio Hallam could just receive it on FM if I did some serious aerial twiddling and even then only at dawn and dusk.
I sent them a letter (I was in my teens) and received a rather nice little postcard and some bits and bobs back. Since then I've had similar cards (QSL Cards, as they're called) from all over teh world but that one is still a favourite, 'cos it was amongst the first!
Ramble over...:)

I worked as a DJ at Samantha's and was about to do a private party for Tesco when Roger Moffat turned up and said he was going to open the evening. Thought I would be smart and tried to teach him to suck eggs. I didn't do enough. Told him to stand between the two overhead speakers and and hold the microphone at the end of his chin. He stood bang under a speaker and put the microphone up to his mouth. Knowone understood a word. Some even said who the hell is that! after that he went to a horseshoe bench seat that was up two steps. He made for the seat and sat on the bottom step. Later he sat at a table and emptied every glass down his throught while the people were on the dance floor. On his way out there were double doors, one open one locked closed. it was like watching a pin ball bouncing off the locked door.

Elephant1972 06-02-2006, 19:07 Hi guys glad I found this Subject. Yes when I was a kid in the late 70s and 80s I used to be hooked to Radio Hallam I could tell you a lot about my memories. I was nuts about it and yes it is a load of rubbish now. I Have lived in London for 13 years but still visit my parents in Yorkshire.
I remember all the Jocks like Ray stewart, Kely Temple Johnny Moran and many others. Look out for other messages I can give you lots of memories.
Elephant1972 06-02-2006, 19:21 I started to listen to Radio Hallam about 1978. I remember Kelly Temple used to do the Oldies show I remember was on a Friday evening. He used to start from 1973 and go through as far back as 1956,
I also remember him doing a saturday evening show from 6 till 8 after the sport. Then he would be on Sunday Morning with a show called Kellys eye. One thing I remember is he had an echo jingle which went HELLO. He also later on about 1981 had a slot called Naughty litle blighters, where parents wrote in and told hime naughty tricks that kids got up to.
No I did not realise he was Asian I remember him having a well spoken voice.
If anyone out there has any very old recordings they could copy for me I would be most interested. It would bring back some Childhood memories.

Actually THE GREAT REVIVED 45 SHOW was Thursday nights 8 while 10. Each week featured a different year and some useless retail prices and local history. Have a few shows on cassette from about 1977 somewhere....
kev21662 06-02-2006, 19:40 I came across Kelly Temple's voice on London radio a short while back. That was a blast from the past, since I hadn't heard him in 25 years!
lolalola 06-02-2006, 23:15 I remember listening to Radio Hallam all the time as a kid. My mum once had a Kelly Temple early morning call where he used to phone someone up at silly o'clock on a sunday morning. I think if I looked we've still got it on tape somewhere. Went to a couple of roadshows aswell and once won a competition to travel on the roadshow bus. Had a lovely radio hallam t-shirt aswell!!
rogdodge 07-02-2006, 18:10 I remember Radio Hallam starting, my teacher at the time (I was about 7) was one of the original sports reporters and made sure we listened to the first programme. I believe he is still at Hallam FM and covers the United matches, Peter Jenkins, although if my memory is correct he was actually a Wednesday fan.
Elephant1972 12-02-2006, 15:54 On Saturday Mornings after the breakfast show with Colin Slade there was a guy called Michail rous. I think that is the right name. He was on Late Mornings. Also Colin Slade presented Hallam Rock every Monday 8u Till 10.
Anybody know what happened to the presenter Dave Roberts who used to present the phone in shows at night in the early 90's
Collin Slade presents the Evening show on Planet rock on DAB.7pm - 10pm weekdays
Elephant1972 18-02-2006, 21:13 Does anyone remember the jocks on overnight 2 till 6? I remember 1 called Maggie Mash she used to be on weedays 2 till 6AM. Maggie went to work for Yorkshire Television as a programme anouncer in the late 80s Also I remember Graham Blinko on a Monday morning.
Also other Djs I think there was someone called Alan West. Also Dave Kilner started on nights when he first joined Radio Hazmmam
Anyone know what happened to Graham Blinko?
PaulTansley 19-02-2006, 12:45 Yes the revive 45 show was on Thursdays and I saw Kelly Temple at the Sheffield show years ago.
He was Asian as someone has already mentioned.
I once sat in with Ray Stuart in 1975 as he did his Saturday morning slot and it was Mike Rousse who welcomed me to the studio.
Stuart did'nt talk a lot but I suppose he had to concerntrate on his show.
Rousse followed Stuart at 12.00 on Saturday....
Na Na Na Na Na
Roussey plays the music on hallam radio
????????, may even bring on tears,
Oh Roussey plays the music on hallam radio.
Elephant1972 19-02-2006, 15:53 Anyone know what happened to Graham Blinko?
If I remember he was the Managing Director in the mid 80s. I used to kn ow his Daughter at Tapton School in about 1985.

I redmember Mike Rouse had a jingle which went Rousey Saturday sung by a female voice. I think if I remember right he used to play the latest releaases and was very knowlegable about music. Also I think he left in the early 80s. I dont know where he went. If I heard his voice again it would take me back in time.
Marky Baby 20-02-2006, 11:25 Mike (Powerhouse) Rouse was one of the engineering team at Hallam.
He started with the "Powerhouse Disco Show" at 7 o'clock on friday nights before Big Ray Stuart's "Hallam Soul Express".
Eventually he was given the Saturday lunchtime slot with the "Flying Pizza Show" Starting with a one hour show, which was later to be extended to two hours.
Sometimes he'd mess around with records, I remember him extending and remixing Sailor's "Glass of Champagne" by copying bits out and adding them back in at various places. All done with reel to reel tape machines (No digital sampling then)
Then of course there was the "Fab Phaser" and the usual collection of funny and unusual records.
I seem to remember him later on in the news with a Ford Transit on giant wheels.
I think, although I may be wrong, that he has a recording studio some where in Sheffield.
I met him a few times, and he was a really nice guy!
PaulTansley 20-02-2006, 11:42 I also remember that someone would send in a request for there worst record to be played for the last time and he would blow it up.
The sound of a big explosion would come at the end of it.
RiffRaff 20-02-2006, 13:13 Early annoying ads also included "BAT joinery".....
Used to be on every advert break - talk about winding you up.
Something else that used to get under the skin was a recording of a bird, twittering away in the background, when Bill MacDonald (I think - a director, too) was on......
You'd think it would be really relaxing but it wasn't!!!!
harwink2 22-02-2006, 06:40 Funnilee enuff.... I came across Hallam on the internet yesterday. It's been 15 years since I left Sheffield. Didn't sound to bad but then I am now an old 'git' who constantly plays eighties music... so sad..
pitsmoorlad 22-02-2006, 09:30 (QUOTE, Anyone know what happened to Graham Blinko?)
If I remember he was the Managing Director in the mid 80s. I used to kn ow his Daughter at Tapton School in about 1985.
Graham Blincow is now retired to a life of leisure and fishing. I've been a friend of his for ..... mmm..... let's see now.......minutes. He's fit and well, although his fishing skills leave a lot to be desired.

Bill Crozier was the one with the twittering Nightingale that he called Florence,(Geddit?) on his latenight "Cosier with Crozier" show
Elephant1972 22-02-2006, 19:50 I remember Bill Crozier doing the request show weekdays 7 while 8PM and Sunday Lunchtimes 12 while 2.
Does anyone remember a presenter called Michail Lindsey? He used to be on Saturday evenings at 8. I cant remember what show he did but I remember his name.
garryh69 22-02-2006, 20:11 i think it's down to popular choice. your now 'to old'.
try listening to classic fm or even radio sheffield. lol

I used to like Michael Lindsay too.
He, like Mike Rouse, was one of the engineers who was allowed "air time"
He used to play jingles from other ILR stations and a few American & 60's pirate jingles and occasionally get the sports editor, Stuart Linell involved.

He might be retired to a life of leisure and fishing but he still knows who his real friends are - anyway, who are you to judge his fishing abilities - sounds like you think you know something about the subject, and that's a myth!!!
It's lovely to read everybody's comments about the life I led for 16 years - I guess I was lucky to be part of it.
If anyone can tell me how to attach a picture to a posting, I'd like to share one with you.
Elephant1972 24-02-2006, 20:15 was his show on in 83 or something ? freddie j allen was always one of my faves on there along with amanda charlsworth
wonder what happend to those 2
Recently Freddie J Allan was on Magic AM Sheffield but I dont think he is there now. Yes I used to like Amanda Charlesworth who was on the Sunday late show. She was very good. She also presented Hallam Folk for a while. She left around 1988 but have not heard of her since then.
Elephant1972 31-03-2006, 20:41 Hi everyone.
If anyone out therer has any old Radio hallam recordings please let me know. Particularly from the 70s and early 8u0s. It would be good to hear some of the old jocks and jingles again. If anyone has any and willing to make copies please let me know.
It's lovely to read everybody's comments about the life I led for 16 years - I guess I was lucky to be part of it.
Graham - Take your mind back to the job you had BEFORE you joined Hallam - at an engineering company. You interviewed me for a storeman's job - but thought I had potential to become a work study engineer and gave me the chance.
That turned my whole life around - I am not in Work Study now, but I have no doubt whatsoever that without you giving me that opportunity my life would have been completly different.
I have often thought about that interview, but never had chance to remark upon it.
Let me publicly say thank you very very much
Hello there, was just browsing the internet when I noticed my name on this forum. It brought a warm comfy feeling to the cockles of my heart! I left Hallam in the late 80's and moved further North and was with BBC Radio Cleveland for a while, and have settled for the moment in North Yorkshire.
Radio Hallam in those days was very special, and I shall always look back with great fondness......it was fab.
I still miss Sheffield and would just like to wish everyone lots of luck and happiness....and if you know of a vacant seat infront of a microphone......give me a call........:)
Amanda Charlesworth.
GrinderBloke 22-06-2006, 17:54 Following replacement of a failed computer hard disk I'm in the process of re-ripping our CD collection and having a listen to stuff which rarely gets listen to...
Just listened to one track which has a Radio Hallam connection, Harry Chapin - WOLD, OK I've told you the track, who is old enough and anorak enough to know the connection. As a clue I will say the connection is with Johnny Moran .
Elephant1972 22-06-2006, 20:51 I think the connection is that the song links with johny moran because he was the morning DJ on Radio Hallam
GrinderBloke 22-06-2006, 22:24 I think the connection is that the song links with johny moran because he was the morning DJ on Radio Hallam
Elephant
Johnny Moran had jingles sung by Harry Chapin... "I am the moring DJ on Hallam Radio", the line take from Chapins song WOLD.
I have a few recordings of Radio Hallam from the first ten years, but sadly none including that particular jingle.
goldenfleece 23-06-2006, 09:20 I do have lots of Hallam stuff from 77 to 81 on tape somewhere....its just finding it....quite a few reel to reel stereo tapes as well of complete shows of Kelly Temple, Ray Stuart, Colin Slade and Keith Skues........regrettably my attic is stuffed to the rafters with tapes, videos and junk and finding anything at all involves a total house clearance...
Marky Baby 23-06-2006, 15:30 I still miss Sheffield and would just like to wish everyone lots of luck and happiness....and if you know of a vacant seat infront of a microphone......give me a call........:)

green-veggie 29-06-2006, 20:57 I loved Radio Hallam. I used to listen to Martin Kelner's show and me and my mate used to write in on loo paper! We were Splish and Splash!
I remember when it went 24 hours. I was very ill and spent most of my teens in and out of hospital having operations, due to congenital disabilities. It was amazing to have 24 hour local radio. It really helped, esp when it was a rough time.
I remember all the jocks, I am ashamed to say I was 'mad' on Kelly Temple in my early/mid teens. Thank goodness we grow up! There was something very special about Radio Hallam. I used to enjoy listening to t5he many varied styles from Roger Moffatt to Cindy Kent. How I wanted to work there!
This thread has bought back great memories.

Does anyone remember a rough date when hallam went 24 hours. I am not quite sure exactly when it was but would be interested to know?
Oblivion 23-08-2006, 10:21 Kelly Temple moved down to London in the early '80's after accepting a job with Capital Radio. He also dabbled in TV presenting - landing his own childrens pop show 'The Bizz' on ITV (I believe).
He still lives in London with his family and is now a successful businessman.
pussinboots 24-08-2006, 15:39 I worked on meals on wheels in the early eighties and Roger Moffatt was one of our customers. I didn't actually take his meals out to him as I didn't do the route he lived on at the time (can't remember where it was) but one of the other volunteers delivered to him.
Dean Peppal rings a bell - he's my nephew's wife's uncle.
pussinboots 24-08-2006, 15:45 On another note, I wish I'd have hung onto my old tapes. I didn't have any of Radio Hallam but had all the top twenty countdowns from radio 1 from the late seventies right through to back end of the eighties. I chucked them all out in a clearing out session - regret it now.
pussinboots 24-08-2006, 15:48 Yeh, nice one Kirky - I clearly remember that Mr Hodgkiss ad!
OMG the Roxy's advert, I'd almost forgotten that - it was on Radio Hallam around the time I used to go in Roxy's - happy days.
loopydrawers 17-09-2006, 21:52 Anthony Gay who used to present for many years on Hallam who as programme director built up the station in to the RAJAR success it is today, was poached by EMAP flagship sister station Key 103 to do the same there.
PERRRLEEEAAAASEEE, Kevin. Anthony Gay did little or nothing to 'build up' Hallam. By the time he took over, Emap had already reduced the job to 'dj-scheduler' as it remains to this very day. (And he wasn't 'poached' - it was an internal Emap 'shove'. He's since been 'shoved' again, this time even further away, to De-Preston's rock fm.)
Tim Finlay 02-02-2007, 09:10 Hi... This is Tim Finlay.. It's really weird to be on line and you see your name as part of a discussion on a web site. So naturally what do you do ? Ray was great and for the last hour of his show I would be sat in the studio and he would tell me bout the the 'Old days'
Hallam FM along with Viking FM and Pennine ( or the Pulse ) were very good to me and their loyal listeners were the very best. I have some cracking memories and some of the best times ever. I'm out of radio at the moment but who knows what the future of radio holds. We all know it keeps coming round in a big circle. Maybe someone will realize that Retro makes big momey and do something on a theme.!! Just perhaps people might wanna listen to what the Presenter has to say.... Sweetcheeks 02-02-2007, 11:38 Hallam in the 70`s was very entertaining with Roger Moffatt being compelled to play Ram Jam`s "Black Betty" which he hated. I always looked forward to Money Mountain with their auctions of gifts donated to their charity. I still have Amos Brearley`s shirt and Annie Sugden`s Jubilee Pinny!:hihi:
Thinking about some of the adverts on Hallam brought back some warm memories, Fletcher`s Loaf and Roxy`s having been mentioned before. Anyone remember the adverts for CCC and 19. " 19 na na na na, na na na 19! " Both of which must have taken all of 10 seconds to research and develop!:hihi:
I did enjoy Colin Slade at 7pm till 9pm then straight over to John Peel on Radio 1. Happy Memories!!!
Elephant1972 02-02-2007, 23:23 Its good to see some more posts about Radio Hallam after a qhile. Thanks tim for writing in. I used to hear you on Hallam on Saturday nights around 1986 10 while 2. Also remember you on Yorkshire Radio Network fro 8 till midnight.
As adverts are I remember CCC and one that was mentioned earlier in the forum the 1 for PA Jewallery the old bank commonside Walkley Mr. Hodgekins Mr. Hodgekins.
Also still looking for old Hallam recordings from the 70s and early 80s

haystack 22-05-2007, 22:00 Radio Hallam Jobfinder broadcast five times every weekday 6.30am 10.30am 12.30am I can't remember the rest... that was me... well jo was the voice ,and what a voice, hic, and I wrote the words behind the voice. Seems a life time ago. Good to hear Mr. Blincow is living the high life.. but then he always did.

Brenda Ellison (Roger Moffat's old side kick) could have been presenting it around 1976. I remember Ray Stuart trying to emulate voice over genius, Bill Mitchell's style with the intro. "Into the night, with Brenda Ellison". I'm sure I've got a recording of it somewhere.

I think James Watt is now working for BBC Local Radio. Radio Lancishire I think.
Just found this site by chance - and what memories it brings back! From about 1978 till I left Sheffield in 1981, I was a regular listener and caller to Martin Kelner's show. I was (and still am) a Mansfield supporter and there was another regular caller called Darren Rowe who supported Forest. We were constantly passing jibes and wind-ups about our respective teams on-air through Martin. Does anybody remember Martin's two female sidekicks, Sarah Lupino Lane and Lynn Mullen "the Bionic Bot"?

Yes! I certainly remember you from Radio Hallam in the early hours when I should have been asleep. Back in 1985ish to 1989 Radio Hallam was brilliant and was always listening to it as a teenager then.
Wasnt there a jingle for Tim Finlay that had something like "under the duvet music with Tim Finlay" or have I dreamt it???

I can remember you on Hallam in the 80s. Am I right in thinking you did a show on Sunday nights at 10pm called 'Charlies Enterprises'? With a bit in it called 'Magic at Midnight?
Loved the programme even though I should have been in bed asleep ready to get up for school on the Monday lol.
Compound_Kid 27-06-2007, 08:42 Have just got hold of some old YRN jingles including yours,Tim,so I'll pop 'em here when I get a spare minute alongside some old adverts (Towngate Motors,Arnold Laver,Rackhams....
a.ndy1234 27-06-2007, 18:02 talking about ads i remember one particular really really REALLY annoying ad .
it went something like : Call coldseal windows on sheffield double two double one double five. and it seemed to be on constantly.
Many memories reading this thread.
Mike Lindsey and Alan West were both from RNI - the pirate radio station in the early 1970's.
Keith "Cardboard Shoes" Skues was unceremomiously ditched from Hallam whilst doing his bit for Queen and Country ( think it was the TA ) abroad. Not very nice when you are supposed to be the programme controller.
Slaphead 05-08-2007, 01:10 Hi Guys
I am new to this wonderful forum and would like to add my memories of Radio Hallam if I may?. I used to live in Doncaster but would travel to visit my big sis who lived at Wincobank, whilst there I would always tune in to Radio Hallam. In the coming months/years I would often make a special trip to the studios, which were based in the local newspaper building if I remember correctly. I got to know Johnny Moran quite well and sat in on his Brekky show many times. I also became friends with the lovely Jean Doyle who presented a Jazz show amongst other things, she was a real gem. What ever happened to Freddie J Allen?, where is he now the big butch devil?
I too would be very interested in hearing any old recordings of Hallam shows as well as those little ditties that went between the songs (jingles). So if anyone has anything they would like to share, that would be abasolutely fantastic, sure it would bring back all kinds of memories.
Finally, so pleased I stumbled across your wonderful forum site, and I hope you will welcome me with open arms lol.
Thanks....The Slaphead
P.S I noticed Tim Finlay didn't mention his leather pants in his post, very fetching Tim, also, you can now hear Tim on KCFM 99.8 on Sunday mornings.

Slaphead 10-08-2007, 12:04 Hi Marky Baby
Absolutely adored the Radio Hallam jingles, oh, the memories (and tears) came flooding back as I placed my movements in Sheffield to the jingles way back then. Great to hear the late Ray Stuart, a big guy with a big voice, Keith Skues never sounds any different does he. I loved Keith's personal jingle "Keith Screws", didn't he have another one centred around a "mock" recording session that went along the lines of..."Keith snooze, Keith scuze...don't upset me howard (?) I'm trying...Keith Skues" ?, could be mistaken but seem to recall something like that.
Anyway Marky Baby, thank you so much for sharing those wonderful gems and if you have anything further that would help bring back the memories please post them or contact me directly as I love certainly love to hear them again.
The Slaphead
P.S Got any "Great Revived 45 Show" memories, or anything on Freddie J Allen (my favourite) please?
Andy the dj 10-08-2007, 18:24 I have to agree with all of you, Radio Hallam was g8 in the 70s and 80s. would love to hear the old hallam jingles again if anyone has any of them.
If you go on "youtube.com" type in radio hallam there is the original ytv calendar report by Austin Mitchel of the opening day of Radio Hallam.(Posted by ex Hallam staff Mike lindsey i think)
Dean Pepple,Gerry kersey,Howard Pressman and Dians Luke are all on BBC Radio sheffield Now. Quite good the station has had a make over, not like it used to be lost dogs and gardening progs. Martin Kelner has just move to Real Radio Yorkshire.
Andy the dj 10-08-2007, 18:39 Over the past few months I have been composing a mail to put out on the web
Which and I stress is my personal views on the state of broadcasting in the UK.
My opinion has changed a little whilst listening to my BBC local radio station.
It has gone through a few major changers in the last few months and I think for the better but to my dismay I found on the radio today website the listening figures had dropped.
The company that owns the commercial local radio station is also in trouble having to net work programs and make staff redundant.
Personally don’t have a lot of sympathy because of the format they broadcast.
The forgotten generation.
As a mobile dj I have a lot of contact with people of all ages and have found I can’t stereotype people. I have found that not everyone over thirty wants the oldies or all the youngsters want the top 40 format. Variety is the spice of life.
Surely when the face of British radio changed in the late 80’s the company’s did some sort of audience research.
BBC RADIO Two is the most popular radio station in Britain. Surely it’s not just the personalities but the variety of the music out put.
I personally want a locally broadcast station that gives me a variety of music.
For many years now my BBC local radio station has appealed to the over 50’s with a very middle class image.
My BBC local station has changed for the better but it has still got the middle class image and people I have spoken to still think the air time is filled with gardening phone-in shows etc. I have found that this is not the case.
BBC local radio needs to change this image with its new style of programming then may be a new generation of listeners will tune in.
thought i would post this here because is sort of ties in with what you are all saying about the GOOD OLD DAYS of RADIO HALLAM I MISS IT!
Please email me if you want to chat or rant about the state of british broadcasting of anything else for that matter.ill reply when ever i can.
no one will give me a phon-in show or chat show may be because i talk a load of c*** but it never stoped scotty mc clue or Tim shaw.
Lee James 10-08-2007, 23:19 Wow! Those jingles were great! great memories, thank you! Always remember the jingle that went..."I am the god of hell fire, and i bring you.....ray stewart!" top stuff!
BoroughGal 10-08-2007, 23:26 I remember the adverts that used to be played over and over and OVER again!
"Mr Hodgkiss, Mr Hodgkiss??"
"What is it now lad?"
"P & A Jewellery, only a minute be car from't University, or catch a 95 bus"
and
"Fresh as tomorrow, good for you, good for me, don't wait 'till tomorrow, better fetch a Fletchers loaf"
and
"Brammalls Gold Room, at Herries Road South, Hilllllsborough!"
(Please tell me you're singing along with me???)
rikimaru 11-08-2007, 00:20 On a totally unrelated point, god the Golden Fleece and Dove and Rainbow, I had some excellent times in both those pubs in the early eighties, especially the D & R, are they still open? (I moved away from Sheffield in 1987). Shame if they closed, I also used to like the Blue Bell, and the Complete Angler.
Rocklegend 14-08-2007, 16:10 Hallam is just like all the other local stations;same old songs day after day.I've tried them all;Viking,Real,Smooth,Classic Gold,Heart,Yorkshire etc etc.None of them can find DIFFERENT hits from the past. All u will hear is Soft Cell-Tainted Love;Human League-Dont You Want Me;Lionel Ritchie-All Night Long/Dancing On The Ceiling/Running With The Night;Aretha Franklin-Say A Little Prayer;Candi Staton-Young Hearts Run Free;Blondie-Heart Of Glass/Tide Is High;Hot Chocolate-You Sexy Thing;Smokey Robinson-Tracks Of My Tears....and on it goes. This small and repetetive list from over 1000 number 1 singles and many thousand chart hits.I emailed Hallam and offered to do them a weekly playlist but surprise surprise didn't hear from them.Radio 2 is the only station to hear something you haven't heard for a while.
Anyone rember Jerry Kersey with the request show
lennonman 27-09-2007, 14:55 Have loved reading the memories of Radio Hallam. I was at school when it started and I remember winning a competition run on the morning show by Johnny Moran. The prize was tickets to the Gaumont Cinema and to meet Slade who were making a personal appearance to publicise their film 'Flame'. I was so scared at meeting my heroes that i froze when it was time to go on stage and only went to the front after they had gone off! Got a signed album which i wish i still had now, its a great memory. Would love to meet Noddy and the lads now though. Later on i have fond memories of the Martin Kelner show at night, it was cult listening for a lot of people, he used to play stand up routines from our favourite comedians, it was great. The station was so different at the time, commercial radio was a new thing then and now there are so many stations they all sound the same. Nice to read other peoples recolections.
Andy the dj 27-09-2007, 21:46 Any one want diffrent oldies please listen to PHIL BUTLER 7PM-10;00pm FRIDAY NIGHTS on BBC RADIO SHEFFIELD.:hihi:
Andy the dj 27-09-2007, 21:55 on a slightly side note the blue bell pub on high street in Sheffield next to Radio hallams old studios and ex local to many ex hallam djs like Johnny Moran,Ray stewart etc.(had many a pint in there with them) is still a good pub now called cavells, owned by Brian Cavell,an old local dj,who used to run the grand central network from the wig and pen and pig and wistle
he ran the Shaggy Dog mobile disco too.
Andy the dj 27-09-2007, 22:02 Does anyone remember Ray stewarts jingle
"hey mugsy whats that you are holding in your hand is it a 45?
no it aint a 45,its a 33 and a third jim,
ok mugsy Play a track.
also the fun tour jingle,
Meeting people face to face
thats what we want to do,
were out and about in hallam land we want to meet you.
does anyone still have a copy of their mag, with all the djs on the front cover in uniform with the black and orange range rover, over looking Sheffield.
Ousetunes 28-09-2007, 07:38 I like the way they now have two Golden Hours, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
The lady deejay who likes to laugh at herself (surely she should have her own studio posse?) always says 'I haven't heard this song in absolutely ages' which is strange because she only played it three days earlier.
I can list what songs are coming up just by hearing what the first song is. This applies to all the identikit stations (Real, Heart, Viking et al), none of which dare treat us to a song that didn't make the top ten. I am sure these Top Ten At Tens are simply compilation CDs which are just played over and over again.
It's predictable, it's safe and it's incredibly boring.
Thus, it's Radio 2 for me.
Elephant1972 30-09-2007, 11:21 I agree a lot of the stations now are too commercial not like the old days. The newer ones like Trax FM Doncaster, Rother FM and Dearn for Barnsley have a more mixed music format where you hear a wider choice of songs old and new.
Rocklegend 30-09-2007, 20:09 Any one want diffrent oldies please listen to PHIL BUTLER 7PM-10;00pm FRIDAY NIGHTS on BBC RADIO SHEFFIELD.:hihi: I do listen to the first hour (then I am forced to go to the pub:mad:) .Unfortunately the show isn't on long enough-i.e. 24 hours....
Elephant1972 02-10-2007, 19:40 Last year Goldenflease posted a lonk to a streaming of a Radio Hamman Recording from 1978 with Ray Stuart and bits of Keelly Temple. I heard it a few times but never tried to download it. After a couple of months the link was invalid. Did anyone actually download it? ai would like to obtain a copy of it if possible.
Andy the dj 04-10-2007, 00:10 There are a lot of threads asking what happened to all the Hallam djs etc. but are there any anaraks or geeks out there who knows what happened to all the equpment from the Studios at Hartshead when they sold out and mooved to Hillsborough.
Andy the dj 17-10-2007, 08:23 Does anyone remember Roger Moffat's (RIP) jingle
"I like Roger Moffat,Ialso like baked beans
But you cant eat Roger"?.
It has to be even to this day the worst jingle in the history of broadcasting and some on other stations have been bad.
It was a spoken jingle by a child which sounded about 6 or 7.
It used to drive kelly temple mad on the Fun Tours when Roger was in the studio and handing over to the roadshow he always played it as he was handing over when kelly was on,as he knew he hated it.:gag:

Ray Bentos 17-10-2007, 22:45 Only just noticed this thread. Wow, it's a long 'un but good 'un !!
On the topic of "Old Hallam", Keith Skues gave the following footage to the BBC last month as it was 30 years since the death of Marc Bolan. It is silent cine of Marc on the roof of the Arbourthorne Hotel. A link to the footage was posted in another thread & I thought it might be relevant to this one. I'm just wondering if anyone recorded this Radio Hallam broadcast on that day in '75 or if anyone knows if the master recording still exists. I would love to hear it. I'm told that Ray Stuart drove Marc up to the pub.

lennonman 18-10-2007, 12:56 Just listened to the jingles, thanks Marky Baby they were fantastic. The first one which went "and if you live in Rotherham or on the River Don, as far as we're concerned you're the number one...anytime" made me roar with laughter, that was brilliant i remember it well, its so cheesy isnt it. They had so many jingles didnt they, and all backed by some jazzy big band!! Great stuff would love to hear some more stories of that time.
Marky Baby 19-10-2007, 11:42 Glad you enjoyed them lennonman!
The 1st & 2nd Jingle packages for Radio Hallam were custom made by Ray Martin at the Emison studios in London. Unfortunately i don't have a copy of the second package. I used to have quite a few of them on tape, but loaned them out and never got them back. If time allows i will upload a couple of other packages, one of which is the Alfasound "24hr Power Station" package featuring Jimmy Helms. If you can't wait, P.M. me your email addy and I'll send you a copy.
Mark

okismoki 19-10-2007, 15:48 i remember ray stuart trying to start a campaign to get trevor hockey back at bramall lane,it fell on deaf ears, but the phone in was so funny. i also remember roger moffat getting reprimanded for calling someone a ******* on air.loved it when he had to be put in a cage when meeting elvis fans on either look north or calendar

I heard from a very good source that many of the archive recordings from the Radio Hallam day's at Hartshead were thrown in a skip, when the newly named 'The New Hallam FM' moved to Herries Rd in 1991.
Although the recordings now belonged to the newish company that had taken over, they disrespectfully destroyed a part of Sheffield history to which i will NEVER forgive them for.
Keith Skues must have been devastated by their actions, but they were not his property and he could do nothing to save them.
I want people to know the truth about what the new owners of the station at that time did with all the precious archive material that Keith had gathered since the station was born in 1974.
I will never listen to Hallam FM and i think others should boycott the station.
They do not deserve to use the Hallam name.
We should never forget those wonderful presenters and personalities who also did 'RoadShows' packed full of listeners.
Radio Hallam was quite literally unique in commercial radio at the time and those who experienced it were very honoured to be there when it happened.
What happened to the great MONEY MOUNTAIN appeals each Christmas?
Hallam FM can only muster an 'Help a Hallam Child' which nobody ever remembers!
They ought to be ashamed of themselves.
I remember the adverts that used to be played over and over and OVER again!
What about these too:
"Tip-toe down to Towngate, down to Towngate, down to Towngate Motor's, tip-toe down to Towngate today!"
"Richards shops are filled with all the pretty things, lot's of all the pretty thing's to share, hey there pretty thing, make the world a prettier place, come visit us and buy your clothes at Richards Shops."
"Cantor's, turns your house into a home."
"Atkinsons of Sheffield...independently YOURS!"
My mum used to know her. She moved to Viking Radio in Hull. Last time my mum heard of her she was working in London in business.
Last time i saw Beverley Chubb, she was working at the Chamber of Commerce, Cumberland Street/Cumberland Way. (Demolished now)
I was attemting to exit the building and got lost, so i ventured into one of the offices and who should be sat behind a desk, noneother than Bev Chubb!
I asked her directions on how to leave the building and then recognised her.
I said: "I know you." She replied: "Do you." And i said "Yes ... you're Beverley Chubb!"
Apparently she had kept her previous life as a famous presenter on Radio Hallam to herself and i don't think many of her colleagues new about her former life.
I sat for a while chatting to her and she was lovely.
Apparently, Roger Moffat used to be frightened of her and used to crawl under the window of her office door so she didn't spot him passing.
When i was listening to RADIO HALLAM, the presenters came out and showed their faces and met the listener via Roadshows and giving out records at the station.
They didn't lock themselves away in the studio, but they did come out to the people.
We still talk about them now!
Will the Hallam FM listener of today recall in 25 + years time the presenters of now - i doubt it!?
I remember a past newsreader/presenter called Mark Meadowcroft who said that he had never experienced at other stations the kind of reminiscing that goes with Radio Hallam.
He couldn't understand it and the reason why was because he was not there and didn't understand the inpact that Radio Hallam had on the region.
And quite different to any other ILR station at the same time.
It WAS unique AND it was leading the GIANT at the time of Radio One, in it's broadcating area. No other ILR station was doing the same at the time like Radio Hallam.
I would be very surprised if Hallam FM is more listened to in it's region, than those who choose to listen to Radio Two, which is the leader at the moment countrywide.
Anyone remember a late night show on Hallam before Martin Kelner took over, roundabout 1976? It was called, i think "Into The Night", but for the life of me i can't remember the name of the female presenter with the lovely seductive voice!
It was either Brenda Ellison or Cindy Kent. They both presented the same slot ... Cindy Kent replaced Brenda when she left the station around 1975/6.
I used to listen to both of them at night b4 going to sleep.
Cindy Kent's show was called "That's Nice" and she would invite the listener to send in a list of favourite tracks that would spell out the shows title.
It was Beverley Chubb !
It wasn't Bev Chubb!
It was either Brenda Ellison or Cindy Kent.
Brenda i think though!
B.A.Sically 23-09-2008, 15:32 thers's nowt wrong with hallam fm its a great radio station :headbang:
You obviously have the rest of us at a slight disadvantage, i.e. your hearing is defective and ours isn't.
"I too would be very interested in hearing any old recordings of Hallam shows as well as those little ditties that went between the songs (jingles). So if anyone has anything they would like to share, that would be abasolutely fantastic, sure it would bring back all kinds of memories."
Oh Go on then, help yourself.

Thanks Mark, That was great afternoon listening for me ... brought back a lot of memories.
By the way, i know this Thread has been running for several years, but why don't most of the links still work?
I'm not at all technical, but all those lovely people who added them, could they activate them again. If that is at all possible,
Many thanks, and let's keep this site alive!!!!!!!:wave:
Marky Baby 23-09-2008, 19:31 Glad you enjoyed them again Joe. When time permits I'll add change the audio for some other jingles / ads. (I've got the Richard shops jingle somewhere on tape.
Radio Hallam had a good start in life. Lets not forget that two of the main presenters (Johnny Moran & Keith Skues) were involved with Radio 1 from it's first day. Roger Moffatt was ex light programme / radio 2 / radio 4. Mike Rouse was an engineer for the BBC and worked with Emperor Rosko and Noel Edmonds on Radio 1. Mike Lindsay was, I think involved with the pirate ships.
The motto of the station was "It's nice to have a radio station as a friend" and for those who remember it, that's how it came across.
It was a station, like many of the early ILR stations that was character lead. The presenters were clearly distinct from each other, playing different styles of music which in those days was picked by a human being! (a bit like radio 2 is today).

I totally agree with the above. How could anyone have thrown those archive recordings out like that? Radio Hallam was the best ever and these archives should have been kept and preserved!
Keith Skues was one of my favourite presenters, great voice and music taste. Does a show on Sunday nights on BBC Radio Lincolnshire now.
Regarding the jingles and adverts, I remember all those old Hallam adverts lol.
Has anyone got the SYT Savercard advert? There was more than one advert as one was sung to the sound of the Beach Boys - I Get Around. All I can remember of it is what I written below...
I get around...on SYT...pick up a card...its so eeeeasy!
The other one went something like this:
Savercard Savercard...fifteen pounds.....suss out the bus and keep costs down!
Ahem:blush:
Hallam jingles are available online in various places as thats how I come across a full Alfasound package a few years ago...
Sounds even better in stereo...R-R-R-R-R-R-Radio Hallam!

I met Roger again around 1982 in the York in Broomhill, and he told me he was barred from the Dove and Rainbow...not sure what he had done....

I had a selection of favourite songs played on Radio Hallam on the Cindy Kent show in 1977. I think it was around September or October .
I can actually remember two of the nine songs I chose that spelt out 'That's Nice'
They were 'No Words' by Wings (from 'Venus & Mars'), 'Easy' by the Commodores.
I wish I'd kept the cassette recording I made at the time.
I also remember helping to push Ray Stuart's car which was stuck in some snow one night up Lydgate Lane in 1978.
I was walking up there with a girlfriend who lived at Crosspool at the time.
Ray and Martin Kelner were my favourite Radio Hallam presenters.

Goldenfleece... I'll have to pop down to the DOVE or YORK sometime soon.
I have a little of Michael Lindsey and Roger's obituary stuff on tape.
I used to listen to Ray Stuart's Top 40 countdown on Saturday morning's, Michael Lindsey on Saturday evening's, Kelly Temple's Great Revive... on Thursday evening's and he did a Disco show on a Friday evening @1978/79.
Used to love listening to Brenda Ellison & Cindy Kent at night b4 bed and Martin Kelner too.
In fact did Bruce Wyndham die whilst presenting the late show following Cindy's departure b4 Kelly Temple took over for a while and then Mr Kelner?
Used to love Mike Rouse and his 'Flying Pizza Show' too!
BladeSteve 25-09-2008, 23:59 'No Words' is of course from 'Band On The Run' Don't know why I put 'Venus & Mars' ....??
What i want to know and i hope the radio giants read this is why are tv archives treated differently to radio archives.
You get repeats of tv shows going back and archive footage from the early days of tv are preserved, but in radio, preservation is never thought of.
What's wrong with radio that is right with tv?
It seems too competetive in radio and disregard for those gone before is rife.
They should remember that they will become surplus to requirement eventually!
Radio is very fickle as is tv, but at least tv respects it's great past.
EMAP and the like are not really bothered about what the listener thinks and feels.
It seems that a good radio station lasts about 7 years from birth or until the giants buy out the station when the licence is up for renewal.
That's what's wrong with radio and the radio authorities should not just go for the highest bidder.
WoodseatsDJ 20-10-2008, 16:26 I remember happy times back late 70s on Hallam. Cycling to all the roadshows on my orange black & red bike! I recall being at the opening do in the Cathedral grounds. I remember organising a trip around the studios - Sat morning while Ray Stuart did the chart show. Loved listening to Brenda Ellison & what an institution Martin Kelner's late night bathers club was. Anyone interested? I recently found an old cassette tape recording of Martin - now in MP3.
goldenfleece 20-10-2008, 17:07 What i want to know and i hope the radio giants read this is why are tv archives treated differently to radio archives.
You get repeats of tv shows going back and archive footage from the early days of tv are preserved, but in radio, preservation is never thought of.
What's wrong with radio that is right with tv?
This is true, but only really of POP radio....you will find BBC radio 4 has virtually its entire output archived on tape as its considered a 'serious' station. The commercial stations were thought of as very emphemeral, simply playing chart records all day with a bit of banter. While each station by law had to record its total output and keep such available for 3 months before wiping the tapes, there was no incentive to archive these tapes and keep a permanent record of the station output. And the financial outlay for tapes would have been huge, plus the storage of such too presented a lot of ongoing problems.
I used to record a lot of Hallam but never had enough tape to record all I wanted....

Like the Hole In The Road, they once were there but now they've gone!
As for the archive, yes, you're right that most of it went to landfill (including the master of the great "Hallamland" and 1982 Sue Manning Music Custom package which you've heard a 3rd generation copy of above) but luckily, some of the jingle masters plus the old ad's you've heard, and some old shows are in safe keeping and being well looked after by one of the younger ex-Hallam jocks who has a real love for radio .
By the way,if you haven't seen this yet,it's worth a couple of minutes of your time...

Look on Martin Kelner's website;there's a bit about him there but nothing saying where he is now....
Andy the dj 26-10-2008, 01:16 Does anyone else remember Tony Hatch coming in to the heartshead studio, when Roger Moffat was doing the request show one weekday evening at 6pm,he some how got him to compose and play a song live on air called "Anything".
he said he would play it everytime someone sent in a request and asked if he would play anything. And Roger did!
Andy the dj 26-10-2008, 01:28 Also i remember Roger Moffat being offed a sum of money for the money mountain to present the morning show live, blind folded, credit to Roger he did,but it turned out to be a cruel hokes.
he also turned up at the heartshead studio one day in his jarmers after locking him self out of his flat.
What a Charactor.
And on his first day in Sheffield he upset everyone by calling Sheffield a B***** awful place,it was because it was a sunday afternoon,he got off the train at Dore station and was driven to the studio for the first time,he noticed that the pubs were closed, that didnt go down to well with him. when asked what he thought of Sheffield on air he said it looks like a B***** awful place.later that week in the "Dove and rainbow" a listner walked over to him and poured a pint over him for it.
He also got in to trouble with the council at Nether Edge for painting a gass lamp in brightly coloured stripes.
Good old Roger.

But would it mean, anything to youooo"

Good old Roger.
Actually, Roger got off the train in Sheffield at the Midland Station, on a wet Sunday afternoon with all the pubs shut!
If he had realised how close to the city centre Dore station was, then he would have got off the train at Dore instead.
A Sun newspaper reporter interviewed him as he left the station, asking him what he thought of Sheffield and Roger replied that it was a bloody awful place.
But Roger did say that any place on a wet Sunday afternoon with no pubs open would be a bloody awful place.
Remember it was 1974 and i suppose the city centre was dead - no pubs, shops open etc
Not like today.
Andy the dj 04-11-2008, 23:02 Thanks for clarifying that,i remember most things but its such a long time ago now the memory isnt what it used to be,reading these threads bring a lot of memories flooding back.
"Bringing back the good times"
there is only "Big John" worth listening to on Hallam now.
he would have been great back in the 70s with Kelly temple,Mike Rouse,Roger moffat etc.

roger moffat was a great guy
My God, yes I remember now. In 1981 I was in Sheffield and I met Roger in the YORK in Broomhill, he was living in a bedsit there and apparently drinking a crate of whiskey a day. He had a walking stick with a bell on it and all the students loved him.
I can remember back in the late seventies, going down to the radio station with me mate's,(all being about 11years old)and putting song requests on for someone.Roger Moffatt would give us a signed photo.
Mike Plant 25-11-2008, 09:00 I stumbled on this site whilst checking for anything "new" about the NDO or particularly Roger Moffatt. So you will understand that I have spent a fascinating hour or so reading the many references--almost all of which,I am happy to see,are complimentary. I was a fan for many years, back to the days when he was a duty announcer on the old North region on 434 metres.
The break came when the show--variously named over the years--which we now refer to as "Make way for music" was put on to the North region,I think, before being promoted to the national Light programme. This some time before it was put on to TV. I was not allowed to watch the tv version,it clashed with allotted homework time. But I did hear bits of it,leading to my lifelong admiration for Jimmy Leach.
Keith Skues put a fair amount of material out following Roger's death, including the funeral service. I was pleased at a connection,as Ray Moore, accompanied by Colin Berry, attended the funeral,I saw this as appropriate as Ray was another of my "greats",also much missed. Perhaps the closest to Roger we have seen,or now will see?
Finally,I have about 6 old cassette tapes made for me by my late Father, just within range of the BBC Sheffield transmitter, when Roger was in his last job, presenting that "Big Band Show" on Saturday lunchtimes. These are "C180" tapes, hence VERY fragile,I'm not keen to let them out of my sight, but could probably copy them on to C90 cassette tapes. But not having any professional equipment,if any demand for copies results,I'd prefer someone else arranged this. But talk to me if interested...
SteelCityMan 29-11-2008, 16:16 Does anyone remember the late night/early hours of the morning show? Used to play excerpts of Lord of the Rings dramatisation. Brilliant!
Mike Plant 30-11-2008, 21:14 No,SCM,I can't say I remember that---but not untypical of "our Rog".Topically,as we are within sight of the Christmas period, some will remember one of the times Roger put his foot in it. He was chattering,as he did so pleasantly,to us,the listeners, about the fact he hadn't yet bought any Christmas presents, preferring to delay that exercise until the last moment. He went on to say,"someone said "It is more blessed to give than to receive"--I am not too sure about that--wonder what idiot first said it... The switchboard was jammed for some hours with complaints--for those not in the know, the saying is attributed to Jesus. Red face!!
Leicsimp57 08-02-2009, 18:04 Top station-used to listen to it back in 78-79 when I was a student here.Particularly liked Martin Kelner who used to run magic at midnight with 3 records in a row.Had a request aired once-played "Substitute " by the Who - had my name mentioned also which was "Rasputin"
Also remember Roger Moffat and Tony Lyman-Everyone seems to remember Roger-am I right about Tony Lyman or is my memory playing tricks ?
Also had a Radio Hallam t-shirt but don't have it now unfortunately.

UncleHonk 21-05-2010, 20:42 A thing:
On 29th May 1981, the Late Martin Kelner show featured an interview. I recorded that interview. Now with the aid of clever things with buttons and screens I have captured the essence of it in it's entirety from where it lived (Anyone remember cassette tapes?).
The file is an MP3 and is over 40 minutes long, but it is available to view, sorry listen to on:
Oh blinking flip! Having just rejoined after losing my original identity, it won't let me post a link until I have made more posts.

Just to correct you UncleHonk; the interview was from a Monday 29 JUNE.
A very interesting recording there and I have enjoyed listening to it.Thanks for not cutting out the music. The interview is with Clark Kents older brother, who is very bitter about his younger brothers success.
Thanks for sharing this with us and saving it for all these years for us RADIO Hallam fans to enjoy hearing. :)
UncleHonk 25-05-2010, 21:02 June? I must have been very drunk when I taped it live and labelled the tape then!
I wonder what became of Dave, who played Kent Kent. (Surname omitted so as not to upset anyone)

Panama84 28-05-2010, 12:09 Recently found a load of old autographed photos from the Classic DJ's - Martin Kelner Roger etc. Used to listen all the time in the early 80's - my friends and I would write into Martin Kelner and request all sorts of rock music. Even remember him interviewing the Human League. We used to go to the roadshows too, and I'm sure I remember one being in Millhouses Park where the special guest was a tartan clad Gary Glitter (or is that justa bad dream?)
Not listened to local radio since we got a DAB - and now its Planet Rock all the time.
Do miss the cheesy old ads though for things like - South Yorkshire Caravans - your friendly road to freedom......
Just trying to get rid of the thought of Gary Glitter now....................
UncleHonk 28-05-2010, 20:19 Might have been Gary Glitter, I remember seeing him live at the Lyceum around that time. (Little did we know!)

Stoneses, goes down great guns!
Someone must have the full versions with the dialogue intact on tape somewhere, surely!
Oh yeh, apparently my niece bought it from Shackletons you know.

Aaaarrgghh! That Mr. Hodgkiss, oh how I miss him!!!
Atkinsons of Sheffield...independently yours!
The old ad I would love :love:love:love: love to hear again is the SYT Savercard one. The only thing I can remember is that it was aired in the mid to late 1980s and was based around I Get Around by the Beach Boys...included the 'lyrics' below:
I get around on SYT, pick up a card its so e-e-easy.
Savercard savercard £15.00, suss out the bus and keep costs down.
Sorry but I cant remember anymore about it apart from the above 2 lines!
Regarding transport-related hallam ads, wasnt there a well-known car dealer ad? Yes! It was the D.C.Cook ad:
Look once, look twice, look for the D.C.Cook sign.
Also transport-related, there was an East Midlands buses ad on hallam (late 1980s/early 1990s?) with the line which went:
People going places...east midlands.
Oh dear, reading those lines from the ads, dont they sound so erm pathetic? these days. I think Mr. Hodgkiss should be brought back out of retirement though.
If I had kept all my bits of hallam tapes I would have probably had some of the ads but I was too young back then to realise how much the ads would be loved (and missed!) by us Sheffielders today.
Keep in mind, radios have to adapt to the times.
The radio station caters more for the needs of 10-40/45 year olds
a nice radio station which sounds your cup of tea would be real radio, not so much talking and what not.
but like i was saying, the djs on hallam fm are extremly friendly and lovely, bubbly even.

Commercial stations these days are too slick and commercial. Back in the olden days of Radio Hallam, the ads, jingles, music and presenters were all brilliant. I listened to Keith Skues last week on Lincolnshire for the first time in a while and although he was brilliant in his Hallam days he is even more brilliant these days!
I used look forward to hearing Hallam's scratched copy of Bat Out Of Hell (album version) to see if they had got round to replacing it yet. Or the times when snippets of LBC and Capital were heard in error. Radio these days doesnt really give the added extras of scratched records, wrong station/early fading in etc.
redshadow 09-06-2010, 15:46 "There's no comparison, with TC Harrison....."
UncleHonk 09-06-2010, 16:17 Remember, it wasn't all good, I still have bad dreams about" A great big Kelly Temple HELLO". The scary thing was hearing that on the radio while on a course in Woolwich, I think he also did a show on Capital Radio, or another regional one there.
I just remember the great Kelner and the way Hallam had the best chart show at the time, the top 50 and several tracks used to get the 12" versions played, far better than the Beeb could manage.
Them were't days! Appen!
Elephant1972 10-06-2010, 19:09 That's correct Kelly Temple left Radio Hallam in the early 80s. A friend told me he did the Weekend Breakfast show on Capital Radio but wasn't there very long. I remember the big HELLO. used to listen to his Sunday morning show and he used to do the great revived 45 show on a Friday Evening.
Today Radio is not the same. local stations have lost their individuality i think. I remember the days when Hallam had 24hr local news instead of joining up to IRN/SKY NEWS at night.
Would love to get old of some archives.

Anyway...
I DO remember avidly listening to a late night (after 10pm?) talk show during the weekdays and one night the radio presenter wasn't there..apparently he had walked out. There was then a big statement alluding to this persons ego and that the station was bigger than "xxx" ...but can I remember his name? UncleHonk 12-12-2010, 14:19 I don't remember that happening when I was in Sheffield, but the timing would match the Late Martin Kelner Show, I remember he left for a Leeds Radio station, but I don't remember when.

You shouldn't put "deceased", if you are not certain or even "believed still alive"!
Both statements are very disrespectful to those mentioned!
Bertielil 24-12-2010, 20:38 Sadly Bill Crozier died in 1994.
Bertielil 24-12-2010, 20:40 Johnny Moran still very much alive.

I apologise re Bill Crozier... I was thinking of Bill Macdonald, but I have yet to see anything on the net that refers to when Bill Crozier died!
Unless you are absolutely sure, I would not have stated that he had passed.
You may be correct, but unless you can point me to some evidence, such comment should not be made.
It does appear that Bill Crozier has ‘gone before’!

Bertielil 24-12-2010, 23:52 Hi Joe9T, we knew of Bill Crozier's passing. When we returned from hols in 1994 there was a message on the answer machine telling us about it & also the funeral arrangements, sadly we returned too late.
Bertielil 25-12-2010, 00:11 Hi Bracken, Johnny was out of the country in September 2007, which was the 40th Anniversary of Radio 1, not the 50th, he attended the 25th, but unfortunately has since been soaking up the rays in the South of France for several months of the year, September included. Hey, that's an Oz for you. lol.
...thanks Bertielil , sorry i meant the 40th (67-07) - didnt Keith Skues also go ?

I'd love to know if Johnny Moran is well and happy and it is fab news to hear that he is sunning himself!!!! I did hear that he lived somewhere @ Doncaster, but no real news concerning him, since he left 'Radio' Hallam in the 80's!
He was a wonderful presenter and one of the 'greats' from 'RADIO' Hallam days, right from the beginning! :)
Also transport-related, there was an East Midlands buses ad on hallam (late 1980s/early 1990s?) with the line which went:
People going places...east midlands..
I have the 'Transport Executive' ad... "Were taking care to get you theeeere ... Transport Executive", from the nineties if that helps!
I only listen to Classic Gold!! Can't get that in my car though, so if I am pushed listen to Peak, but mostly cd's.

James H Reeve phone-in @ mid 90's was brilliant. He knew what he was talking about and the many characters that came on made for a great nights listening. Margaret from Leeds, Lawrence with Reeve Town and posh guy supposedly from a mansion nr Retford.
