Has anyone noticed that to play a lot of avi files on the 360 they have started making you sign in to xbox live?
I have looked for any additional media plugins to download but there isnt any!
is this microsofts attempt to cut down on piracy? secretly scan the movie your watching to make sure its not illegal..
Hasn't that always been the case? I dont think MS have just started doing that.
I think it has something to do with the licensing agreement with the codecs owners, but at least you dont have to do that with the PS3...
You only have to sign in to download the media update, once you have that, you don't have to sign in next time.

Not always true, on my 360, I don't have to be connected to xbox live to play .avi's, but my housemate (and some other people I know) have to be connected to xbox live otherwise it won't play them. Even when the update is downladed, it will only play the avi's if connected to xbox live.

the reason why it only plays avi when coneccted to live is because it downloads the codec while your watching

but it doesnt need to. before i got my elite the premium downloaded a codec pack and that was it.
if it doesnt need to connect to live to get the codec as its played then you have to ask what the reason why they do it this way?
i think im going to dig out my old xbox and update xbmc, im not liking the way this is going..
mine doesnt make me sign in - and I watch ALOT of avi's.

it's even more confusing if it's not all 360's...

Yeah it is, I have my 360 set up the exact same way as my housemate's yet I don't need to be connected to live to watch avi's but his does. Very strange.
