Probably Cleethorpes
Yeah, Cleethorpes is only just over an hour away... M1, M18, M180, quick drive through Grimsby and you're there.
Cleethorpes is very nice as well, I used to live there back in my student days, loved the place... Only downer is that the arcades are a bit outdated :(
redrobbo 29-04-2005, 09:38 Cleethorpes is probably nearest - but the beach is very muddy. They even have a mud buggy rider as an 'attraction'.
Scarborough is a little further in time and distance - but the beach is very sandy.
sheffbag 29-04-2005, 10:58 Beach nightclub in Rotherham heh heh mind you you will be the only one there
Get th' sen down to clegvegas its an hour stright down M18 / M180 turn the stereo up on the annoying A180
What about Whitby......beautiful fishing village without all the commercialised crap found in Skegness or even Scarborough!!

The beach isn't very good in Whitby though, Robin Hoods Bay has a nice small beach, or you could try Filey, which is a bit comercialised but the beach is huge.
salmaK asked which is the nearest one not the best.
If you want the best, you need to be in Portugal, but the nearest or fastest from Sheffield is Cleethorpes.
muddycoffee 29-04-2005, 11:42 scarborough is a long way from sheffield. It is 108 miles from hillsborough I used to go with my family every year.
Cleethorpes has got to be the nearest.

We were just offering a few alternatives because even though Cleethorpes is the nearest it is more a mudflat than a beach.

And there are some good alternatives as well.
A bit out of the way, but Robin hood's bay is lovely.

Are you kidding?!!!
The beach at Whitby is fabulous, fantastic, one of the best in the world. You can have a lovely two mile walk along it to Sandsend.
Most of Cleepthorpes beach is ok - it's only the part near Pleasure Island and the caravane sites that's muddy.
Well worth the hour's drive to get there!

I agree with that Scoop.
We were there last year and cannot fault it.
beansfeast 29-04-2005, 12:13 As we're all going on about beaches near and far, anyone been to Spurn Head recently? Fantastic beach, amazing place to go even if you do have to pay for it. And seeing the huge ships so close is something else...

I thought there was only a bit of sand, I didn't even know there was that giant beach to the north.

slimsid2000 29-04-2005, 12:21 I'd say Cleethorpes is the nearest if you don't mind Cleethorpes. Personally, I would say it is worth the extra bit of journey to go to Brid or Scarborough.
Is that some kind of rock formation in the sea near Robin Hoods Bay ?

It is a rock formation Nick, and you can walk right out on the rocks.
It is brill.

Every time I've been to Robin Hoods Bay the tide has been in, or has been coming in :(

We usually go for a week (for Whitby folk week) so sod's law says we are going to catch it out at some point.

Wrong Lucifer,
via road
sheffield to scarborough 108 miles
Sheffield to cleethorpes 70 miles
I once got back from scarborough in 2 hours, which was very late in the evening after the traffic has quietened down.
Whereas, common consensus on this thread states that you can get to Cleethorpes in just over an hour, I haven't been for nearly 20 years though.
sheffbag 29-04-2005, 14:14 if you go down m18 to hull through it and up coast road to brid you go past a little gem
Mappleton sands
Nothing else there and you can easily miss it but lovely beach very tranquill

just dont go when the MOD firing range next door practises on a wednesday
timborich 29-04-2005, 14:21 Cleethorpes is a great beach, really clean and quite long. Scarborough is OK but it's always packed at bank holidays. Cleethorpes is great and under-rated. There's also a fantastic art shop there if you want a bit of culture after the beach!
Internetowl 29-04-2005, 14:27 We went to the coast on sunday to skegness - the beach was awful - lots of sludge - better off going to Brid / Scar / Robin Hoods bay - for the sake of a few miles more...
foo_fighter 29-04-2005, 14:30 According to my copy of Autoroute, from Sheffield,
Scarborough is 100 miles,
and the two closest are,
Cleethorpes 73 miles
Hornsea 75 miles
Have fun. :)
dishwasher 29-04-2005, 17:10 Went to Cleethorpes a couple of weeks ago. It took us 75 minutes each way.
Lovely fish and chips at Ernie Beckets!
Ten donuts for £1 along the front.
What more could you want from a day out?
Oh - and it was sunny and warm as well.

Ah, but there is quite a bit of shingle on Hornsea beach. And have they finished the work to the sea-front yet?
Skeggy - keep it, it's as muddy as Cleethorpes.
Ingoldmells - suburb of Skegness.
Mablethorpe - northern relative of Skegness.
Withernsea not mentioned yet? Not surprised though. Boring.
Whitby-Sandsend - beautiful beach. Worth the effort to get there.
Scarborough - ditto.
Filey - very nice.
Bridlington - miles of lovely beach.
Mappleton - now sheffbag has let the whole forum know about this little gem of a beach I'll have to go to my other favourite less crowded sandy beach in future (but not telling anyone where it is!).
Robin Hoods Bay - nice, but not as nice as Runswick Bay.
Staithes - it's a trek down the hill into the village though. Nice pub (Cod & Lobster from memory).
Spurn Point. Don't forget the lighthouse and bird-watching as additional attractions to the large boats passing by. You can wave across the mouth of the Humber estuary to the poor souls on the mudflats at Cleethorpes though!
Internetowl 29-04-2005, 20:20 You forgot Chapel St Leonards.....does it still exist?

Sshhh - keep quite will you!
foo_fighter 30-04-2005, 16:46 Do you work as a coach driver Red? ;)
Seriously though, quite a good précis of the destinations on offer.
Have you decided where you're going yet SalmaK?

Agreed. All are totally horrible places. The problem I have, is that I have to visit Skeggy frequently - inlaws:().

Skipsea is far worse!;)
Having done nearly all of the seasides within 100 miles in the last few years I've got to say that our favourite is Bridlington.
It's got miles of lovely sand, a top class chippy by the harbour, and is easy to get to - not as easy as Cleethorpes but altogether a better day out IMHO.

I agree! I was brought up in Brid and couldn't wait to leave.. now when I go back to visit the folks I love the place and can't understand why I hated it so much! Guess the grass always appears greener..!
Internetowl 01-05-2005, 11:43 given a choice - I'd probably prefer Brid to Sheffield any day - all things being equal - ie got job paying as much in Brid...similar property etc
the kids would certainly prefer it..
melthebell 01-05-2005, 11:46 its only about 2 / 2 and a half hours away from here.......theres loads of beaches here
whitby, scarborough, runswick bay, robin hoods bay, staithes, port mulgrave, redcar, skinning grove, sandsend :P
think we might catch the bus to scarborogh tommorow for a change, we always go to the other beaches
Its a bit futher, but Blackpool is only 2 hours away
mrchinnery 01-05-2005, 13:55 For me Mablethorpe has to be the best nearby beach.
It has a car park on the sand dunes just north of the town.
a very long beach with a gently sloping bed.
The walk into town (for the small funfair, chips or a beer) is suitable for wheelchairs and prams but the ramp up the car park is a bit steep for wheelchairs.
Cleethorpe, Skegness Blackpool and Rhyl are too busy and noisy for me.
dr_scotland 01-05-2005, 22:26 filey lives about 98 miles away from sheffield, but theres nowt happenin there, except the sea comin in and goin out again (usually twice a day or so).
theres a bloke opposite the bus station just got a new volvo, and the chemist on the corners got a few bits in the pound bin.
sometimes the barrriers close the road so as a train can get past.
as an ex sheffielder, ive been visiting filey since before i was born. nothing much ever happened.
cleethorpes however was incredible when we were kids.
once this bloke by this campsite chucked some petrol on his bonfire to get it burnin better - well, our caravan shook like i was due to get new sister.
and he got burnt a bit.
another time i remember, the sun was so hot that the sand turned to molten glass and we all had to hop 3 miles down to the sea.
the icecream van by the beach overheated and its engine set on fire. and some dippy bloke on a rubber boat had to get rescued from the sea, and I got me photo taken next to the chopper what caught him!!:D
i suppose the moral of this tale is cleethorpes rules!!
or it did 25 years ago...one weekend in august.
sheffbag 03-05-2005, 11:29 i forgot about runswick - spent a quality weekend there once.
Dont worry about revealing mappleton, most people just drive straight past and dont even see it
only 1 mention on three pages about the west coast, easiest journey in my opinon has to be the 98 miles to Blackpool. Not everyones cup of tea its a bit brash and bold and with the kids not cheap, but the drive M1,M62, M55, M5 and your in the car park has to take some beating.
Nice beach if you take the ssouth shore directions in past the airport at squires gate and near to the holiday camp place sand and dunes very nice then jump a tram not a super tram though and into the town for a bit walk back and home best journey time with out speading 1 hr 35 minutes
.
Cleethorpes is also an easy drive and not a bad place for a day out as you can go to the pleasure island place if kids want thrills and spills. good journey M1 M18 M180 do it in just over an hour
Next bank holiday their will be a beach in Sheffield as part of the Mayfest event in Hillsborough park. 40 tons of kids play sand 100s of deck chairs and sea gull sound effects to make it all seem more realistic and its under canvas in a marquee
last year saw loads of kids digging and parents just sat in the deck chairs testing the beer from the beer tents.
it is just something else that is included in the admisson price for the event, another thread questioned the cost of this event, but the entertainment in the main arena, lots of toilets, security, first aid, hallma fm live stage kids play and entertainment tent, as well as the massive clean up afterwards seem a pretty good value for the cost of the admission, two years ago they even had a circus show that was free once you had paid to get in. not bad really for four quid each it cost that at the pictures for 90 minutes.

Awesome (if rather pricey) fish restaurant there as well.

You have to pay to go to Spurn Head? How does that work? I've been meaning to go for ages... better get round to it soon before it gets washed away...
While I'm at it, I'd better put in a good word for my home town. Yay, Cleethorpes. There. If you go then have a pint in Willy's, on the sea front (central promenade) - lovely beer brewed at the back of the pub, and a nice view out over the estuary. Oh, and fish and chips in Steel's in Cleethorpes market place. Best in the world (apparently)...

Staithes i lived down the bottom for about 7 years, the royal george was always the posher pub, the black lion was inbetween (used to go in there all the time till i fell out with the owner..hes a right woman hating tucn, tried to smack my missus once so i chased him down the road with a bat :P) the cod and lobster was always the "scummy" one, its the one i visit most mind cos its close to the sea, always visit there when its lifeboat day, gets full right across the front, people meeting up and drinking.....love it.
whitby we visit loads, sandsend, the missuses mums just moved there, she lived at staithes after moving from sheffield too.
scarborough we went to on bank holiday monday, good town, beach, had fun, trouble is it took us a couple of hours to get there on the bus, so had less time to do stuff, before the bus home
runswick bays ok, gets a lot of little flies and stuff there tho, and the hill is humongous, i prefer going to the pub at the top tbh :)

I agree.. there are some great things on.. but object as a local for having to pay just to take my kids to the park/playground/ducks as I did last year when I accidently stumbled across the gala!

Spurn point is brilliant, miles of sand! Bridlington is nice but busy. Although not a beach, Hornsea Mere makes a good day out. Mappleton sands is great too, but it will be in the sea soon, haha

The bank holiday is now over, and is the best time to go to Spurn Point. It is only a single track road to the end, murder if it's busy, to get along, it took me nearly an hour to go the three miles once.
The best time is mid week when the tide is coming in, thousands of waders on the river side, so take your binoculars.
Great beach on the sea side but not very safe for swimming, ok for paddling.
Great pub at Kilnsea, the Crown and Anchour, has a good pint of Tetley's and good food:)
