View Full Version : Where to get a decent custom built PC?
amyjhill 16-08-2008, 23:16 Hey,
Wanted some advice from people who are more technical than myself!!! My sister and i are buying a new PC she is putting the bulk of the cash into it and i am putting a little bit towards... I want to have one built i had my last one built at the real computer shop and i just wondered if any people knew of any other good places?
I have a vague idea of what we need i want it to run fast and have a big memory i currently have 80gb but i want to store all my music on the comp so i can transfer to my MP3 player. I want it to be more or less top of the range. I did a spec on the real computer shop website and t works out around £720 but i'm not sure what all the components of the list mean could someone explain?
Thanks,
Amy XXX
List the components and I don't doubt someone will be able to help (possibly myself ;) ).

Bloomdido 16-08-2008, 23:38 You want a computer that can store MP3 files? You can pay a lot less for a machine that will do that. Are you (or your sister) planning on doing anything else with it?
amyjhill 16-08-2008, 23:51 Yeah we are want a more upto date version of mine want all my cds on there (approx 500) vids, pics so its a entertainment PC or media PC not bothered about gaming also would us it for audio editing. Thinking of ringing the real computer shop and seeing if they do a trade in cos the service there is good

Bloomdido 17-08-2008, 10:33 A friend just built me a 2.8Gig Athlon with a Meg of RAM and a GeForce 512 Mb card. Only 80Mb Hard Drive though. Cost me £130 for the base unit. I put all my stuff onto an external Drive as well, just in case.
amyjhill 17-08-2008, 11:07 Thats not bad at all i definately want the case from there want something small my PC looks really old and dated! Does your mate build PC's for a living?
Ta Amy
JohnGraham 17-08-2008, 11:34 buy all the parts you want online then just take it into a computer shop and pay £30 for them to build it for you
amyjhill 17-08-2008, 11:58 thanks for the advice it would work out cheaper that way so thanks again!
If your not playing games, and your just doing music editing and using it as a 'media player', your looking around £300 for a decent machine in a 'shuttle' case that will do everything you need (including 1080p HD if required)
amyjhill 17-08-2008, 13:05 Hey thanks for that from the list what spec would you advise? Mine has 80gb memory want more than that cos its nearly full and its dead slow now! Would try and trade in or get rid but not sure what to ask for it! X
Most computer shops won't do trade in's against a new machine as the market is pretty saturated with old equipment and the resale value is quite low for an old machine but you could ask them if there's any components in yours that they can move to the new machine to save some cash.
The other alternative is to just sell it privately, you could try the for sale section here on SF.
For simply audio editing, and a media pc...
I would avoid the AMD Semprons or Dual Core(X2) for a start, these are getting old now (atleast 5 years) and go for a Core 2 Duo, or even a Quad Q6600 (these are sub £100 now)
MEmory, I would go for ATLEAST 2GB (2x 1GB) or go for 4GB (2x2GB) even if you can't use the full 4GB, simply because 3.75GB is better than 2GB, and you should run it in 2 slots (not just one) for Dual Channel mode which will help with performance of the memory its self.
As for Hard drive, SATA2 is the standard now, and i'd recommend 500GB or more, especially since you'll have (im assuming) videos on there, as well as mp3's
TVTuner, Why do you need it? im guessing you'll be plugging it into a TV any way, hence you won't need this.
as for GFX, a Radeon HD3650 (£50) or similar will do the job, Full HD compliance with HDMI output (including 7.1 HD Audio via the HDMI if you so wish)
For optical drives, go Blu-Ray or HD-DVD/Blu-Ray combo, pretty much any of them will do the job.
USB Pen Drives, pick up somewhere else, they are cheap and cheerful, WiFi, I would avoid if your planning on possibly streaming/sharing media over a network, as WiFi can be problematic for this at the best of times, a cabled solution is always better where possible.
