Hi,
Ive been at my place of work now for over a year. I am an excellent member of staff and over acheive EVERY month in all i do. Im dedicated to this company and love where i work. I was told in January that from the first of August when a current member of staff left then i would be promoted to department manager. This was agreed by my manager and their manager(regional business director). So from the first of August i have been managing the department and celebrations for my promotion have taken place. All my family know etc and I have been progressing well as a new manager in my place of work . . . .UNTIL, this friday my boss left and their boss has also been replaced. The new manager came to me for a chat and said that i cant have this position as he doesnt know me, my excellent track record just is not enough as he needs to get to know me and i have to prove myself to him. I said i wasnt happy but to be honest i dont think hes moving on this one. Does anyone know if this is illegal? My budget is all messed up due to the pay rise i was expecting and i feel so stupid and angry. Sophief

Did you have a revised contract or anything in writing about this new position/salary?

no i had nothing in writing but im sure i've read that a verbal contract stands up just as well as a written contract, plus i've already been doing the job.

Have you anything in writing is probably the most relevant, or anyone who can back you up?

does the company you work for have a HR department , or who was the person who issued your initial contract before you were promoted ?

If you have neither then unfortunately if you cant prove your promotion you may have to put it down to experience , when you accept new duties at work make sure you have an email as a minimum, verbal contract can be very difficult to prove.

You have been managing a department within a world-wide company and you need tips from a forum to stand your corner.

Detailed grievance. First step in anything like this.

why are the two managers no longer in their posts?

now I could be way wrong on this one, but I'm fairly certain that it's a legal requirement for jobs to be advertised and applied for in a transparent fashion, to stop the old problem of favouritism. If you've been offered a job under these circumstances, it sounds like your bosses may have been rumbled for other similar misdemeanours

It may not sound very fair from the perspective of the situation standing in your shoes, but at least it sounds like your new boss is prepared to give you a fair crack at the whip, rather than just announcing they're bringing their own team in from outside!

Strix - there isn't actually any legislation stating that positions have to be advertised and applied for in a transparent fashion - it is policy in many many public and private sector firms which is good practice to get the best candidates based on skills/experience for the job (to stop internal favorites as you suggest) - but there isn't any legal requirement. Companies can fill their positions how they want. In some circumstances - where it can be difficult to recruit (such as call centres)- find a family/friend to work for the company and you get a bonus payment.

that method of recruitment applies in many fields - my Aunty received a bonus for putting my sister forward for a job, but my sister still had to go through a round of interviews

MALKY - its not that i need tips from a forum, i feel so alone on this and dont want to spoil my chances at work therefore dont want to seek advice internally, this has only just happened and to be honest if itd been open i would have gone straight to citizens advice, i was just sat at home feeling devastated and wanted somewhere to chat to people so im sure you now realise there was no need for the patronising comment.

You can't just be demoted by a new boss...you started in the new job at the beginning of August right? If your track record is tangible and you have results to prove it - then why would he "need to get to know you" - sounds like a bit of power hungry jobsworth new boss to me. If you are an excellent employee as you say you are with a results driven track record - then show some backbone and stand your ground with your new boss.

Quit.

If you were good enough and they don't want to you to go, then you will be re-hired on your terms.

If they accept your resignation then this was not the job for you. Find another where you are valued and move on.

Those are the words of Paul Arden (look for his books on Amazon)

Patronising  I feel you have a lot to learn if you want to manage a department, maybe it was a good thing you were overlooked on this occasion.

Two heads are better than one:D, I just thought it was strange for a manager to be asking for a second opinion on this matter, maybe Sophief will prove herself to the new manager and still get the promotion she wants.

Hi - there had been some confusion when the new manager took over. Im now still department manager, the new regional didn't realise that i'd already been promoted (although i told him), Suppose this is a good example of poor communication. MALKY - of course i have a lot to learn, Im a very young person in a high position in a worldwide company and i will learn so much over the next few years, but even as a young person, inexperienced in management, i still know that YOU have no need to be bitter and nasty to me, this is a discussion forum. If you are wanting cat fights i'd recommend something for teenage girls.

That's really good news! Hopefully it will give you confidence in the future to hold your own and communicate with your colleagues - no matter what level they are on.

You dont have a leg to stand on I am afraid. Take it on teh chin and buckle down to prove to your new boss that you are worth the promotion - hope it all works out
