View Full Version : Swimming Pools - Which one is the best? Bryce_boi 08-03-2003, 20:15 whats the best swimming pool in sheffield? *Twinkle* 08-03-2003, 22:17 Well I wouldn't say Ponds Forge, thats for sure. I prefer Eckington. Its fairly quiet and its also quite cheap too! (A family ticket is just £5.35) Geoff 08-03-2003, 22:17 What do you mean by "best"? Ponds Forge certainly has Sheffield's largest swimming pool, but it can get very busy. RPG 08-03-2003, 23:56 Ponds Forge: Good long pool, as well as "funpool" Eckington: Quite good, i used to go there as a nipper, cheap too Dronsfield: Apprently good, and cheap Lickszz 09-03-2003, 03:40 Sheaf Valley was the best I have ever saw in Sheffield. What a shame they demolished it. Banksia 09-03-2003, 07:46 We are coming over to Sheffield, UK in July for a two month holiday. As my husband and I swim laps several times a week and want to continue our exercise regime. can you tell me the best pool for us to attend ? Also how long is a session and what is the cost. Sam Miguel 07-01-2004, 23:48 I go to Heeley. It's old-fashioned with the old changing-rooms around the side of the pool, but there's something about the place that I like. Fletch 08-01-2004, 08:20 The Goodwin Centre on Manchester Road near the Childrens has just been refurbished and is really clean they also have Brilliant power showers in he changing rooms, and a suana and a steam room. mmmmmmm i end up doing 30 mins swimming and 40 mins in the steam and suana Jamie 08-01-2004, 14:44 Yeah ... I used to go to the heeley pool on my way to work in the mornings ... really like that place ... it was always hot and streamy there (i don't mean female lifeguards) ... very quaint and charming old building ... very nice. I now go to ponds forge ... isn't quite the same !!! ... but the pool is nice and big and deep ... and seems to have about 10% the chlorine content of the heeley pool. *Twinkle* 08-01-2004, 16:42 I go to Eckington.... its quieter than ponds forge and half the price! Mo 08-01-2004, 17:57 Originally posted by caprice I go to Eckington.... its quieter than ponds forge and half the price! Might see you there Caprice. I am there twice a week. *Twinkle* 08-01-2004, 21:35 Ooo! I go on Sunday mornings if i'm not working... when do you go mo? Andy 08-01-2004, 21:52 Originally posted by Jamie I now go to ponds forge ... isn't quite the same !!! ... but the pool is nice and big and deep ... and seems to have about 10% the chlorine content of the heeley pool. How much does it cost? Sam Miguel 08-01-2004, 22:03 Yeah , I once went to Eckington pool and it was freezing. It is cheap though in Derbyshire, isn't it. £2.90 to get into Heeley! Jamie 09-01-2004, 12:46 Last time I went to the pool in Eckington ... I think it was £1.50. I am a fitness unlimited member, so I pay a flat monthly fee (£23 for me) ... and I can use the facilities at the 4 SIV sports centers (well ... I only use hillsborough and ponds forge personally). So I get fitness classes, yoga, gym, swimming (and soon running club) ... all for £23 / month. Not sure how much swimming is for non-members at ponds forge ... might be as much as £3.60 (guess). Mo 09-01-2004, 13:22 Originally posted by caprice Ooo! I go on Sunday mornings if i'm not working... when do you go mo? Tues and Weds evenings. Rich 09-01-2004, 23:46 Many moons ago I used to go to Upperthorpe baths and the old Hillsborough baths (which is now the Deep End pub), nowadays I use Ponds Forge and Hillsborough Leisure Centre. I get in for just short of 3 quid though cos I have one of those Slice cards. tinajones 10-01-2004, 01:00 Hathersage pool is unbeatable. Bit chilly when I went for a dip this afternoon though... *Twinkle* 10-01-2004, 21:27 I am a fitness unlimited member, so I pay a flat monthly fee (£23 for me) That's really good value for money!!!! Do you have to sign up for a year or anything? Jamie 10-01-2004, 21:42 Originally posted by caprice That's really good value for money!!!! Do you have to sign up for a year or anything? Hi Caprice, I think it's £25 when you first join and goes down £1 every year. I am quite sure you can cancel at any time ... but you have to pay by direct debit ... They may still have an offer on ... you got 3 months free (during a 12 month period). *Twinkle* 11-01-2004, 15:52 Aaahh... thats not bad, but i'd prefer to pay per month because I might get sacked and not be able to pay for the gym or something ridiculous like that!!! Rich 11-01-2004, 15:58 Originally posted by tinajones Hathersage pool is unbeatable. Bit chilly when I went for a dip this afternoon though... Who'd want to swim in an outdoor pool this time of year though? ;) I hear it's a good one though if the weather's right for it. Andy C 14-01-2004, 21:57 I am wanting to start going swimming once a week after work for a bit of pleasant excercise (am rather unfit). Living at Bradway my local pool is Dronfield, and have seen from their website suitable sessions, only trouble is the buses home from Dronfield stop running at about 5pm, so that is ruled out. I tried Ponds Forge last Thursday (after checking their website that they were open) and found only 2 crowded lanes in use, and the lanes were a ridiculous 50 metres long. I just want a managable length (25m) and a bit of space, being very out of practice. I am thinking of perhaps Graves or Heeley pool but cannot find any online information. I also remember seeing a leaflet from Graves and normal people aren't allowed to swim there except for about one hour a week on a Tuesday afternoon or something silly because all other sessions are reserved for things like women only or babies only or kids lessons or whatever. I object to joining a fitness centre for £40 a month as that works out at £10 a swim - what a rip off. Can anyone make any good suggestions? nomme 14-01-2004, 22:06 Originally posted by Andy C Can anyone make any good suggestions? On a pay as you basis the uni pool at the goodwin sports centre works out at 3 quid per swim, including use of sauna and steam room. Pool is 33m long. Close to 52 bus route (get off at Childrens hospital or Western Park hospital and walk from there) http://www.shef.ac.uk/usport/prices.html Nomme Sam Miguel 15-01-2004, 12:53 Originally posted by Andy C I. You won't find any online info on Heeley - they probably haven't even heard of the internet it's so old-fashioned. Seriously, though: I go there two or three times a week, and it's great. Pool is around 25m. The number is 2500443. They will give you all the information you require regarding opening times and sessions. mikey 15-01-2004, 13:04 Originally posted by tinajones Hathersage pool is unbeatable. WOW :o  You went to Hathersage in January, I have to agree it is good, but prefer it in say June when you wouldn't freeze your nuts off. Tinajones I am impressed, how long did it take for you to get in the pool? tinajones 15-01-2004, 19:26 Originally posted by mikey WOW :o  You went to Hathersage in January, I have to agree it is good, but prefer it in say June when you wouldn't freeze your nuts off. Tinajones I am impressed, how long did it take for you to get in the pool? It was a joke - I assume an outdoor pool in Yorkshire would be closed for the Winter season! :loopy: However, on my holiday to the Canaries last month the pool there was cooler than cool, it was ICE COLD (it was hot weather tho at 26 degrees) due to it being built in the path of the wind. Great for me though as it was empty most of the time. Andy C 17-01-2004, 18:27 Sorry to be annoyingly pedantic but Hathersage is in Derbyshire not Yorkshire. Still damn cold in January though granted! Whilst Heeley probably would not have their own website, I thought at least the basic info would be on the Sheffield council website - Derbyshire do that. Anyway, Heeley sounds a good idea and I might start going there. Thankyou and goodnight! jessycar 25-01-2004, 00:37 I go to Ponds Forge, swim in the club there. When I swam for my old club we used to also swim at King Edward's and Heeley. I used to use Charles T Broughton (Aston Comp) pool quite a bit and Woodthorpe when it was open. We used to go there when I was little. Ponds Forge doesn't have as much chlorine in it to whoever mentioned it earlier in the thread. It uses Ozone to kill the bacteria. All the new pools are done this way. mollymoomin 18-03-2004, 16:00 Hi I am a journalism student writing a feature on the history of Hillsborough Baths, now the Deep End. I am looking for information about how it used to look, the building, and what it cost to swim there. I also want to know when it closed. If any one knows this information or remembers swimming there please let me knw, I would be most grateful molly x powerpuff140 12-03-2006, 20:43 I go to Westfield Swimming Pool twice a week and its a really friendly pool. it costs about 2.70 to go in and the pool is 20m long. I'm not saying its the best but its fairly good. The pool is off Westfield Cresent in Mosborough. Dont know if thats any help. Fudbeer 13-03-2006, 00:51 i went to ponds forge the other day its not bad but as usual they were only using half the pool and although they were not to bad you just do not get the feeling the changing rooms are as clean as they could be i think it needs a bit of a facelift. |
