View Full Version : The Golden Weekend
One of the UK's finest days ever at an Olympic games .. 4 golds and five other medals, in the space of one afternoon.
Rebecca Adlington shatters the 800m freestyle world record, to bag her second gold medal of the games;
The men's coxless four win gold for the third games in a row (a different crew, but the same event); two other rowing crews bag bronze medals;
Bradley Wiggins romps away with gold in the 4000m pursuit, and bronze goes to Steven Burke, in a time some fourteen seconds better than his lifetime best before these Games;
Chris Hoy wins the men's kierin with teammate Ross Edgar snatching silver in the home straight.
Bronze also for Chris Newton in the men's point race at the velodrome.
Guaranteed medals for Ainslie and the girls' Yngling crew on the water have been delayed until tomorrow because of no wind; we also have a guaranteed gold-silver in the women's 3km pursuit at the velodrome, where Rebecca Romero and Wendy Houvenaghel will contest the final between them. With four more rowing crews also in finals with good medal chances, the haul for this weekend is far from over.
Just fantastic :love: I couln't belive how fast she was, she left every one else behind passing them on her way back :hihi:
This should have been posted in General (I think).
The women's 800m freestyle was certainly worth getting up at 03:00 for :thumbsup:
Addlington an early contender for Sports Personality of Year? Not only did she dismantle the rest of the field, smash a 19 year old world record, and become the first double gold swimmer for GB in 100 years, she also seems to be quite a nice lass.
And Team GB's performances in the velodrome have been a joy to watch today.
Wonder if the men's 100m WR is about to be broken... Bolt's cruised the last 30m of his semi, and came in in 9.82......
Wow - 100m world record smashed and he wasn't even trying, three quarters of the way he was already celebrating, waving his arms around

Breathtaking brilliance. So far clear and he was pounding his chest with10 metres to go.

I think the word "awesome" comes close.....Let's face it, if he hadn't started "play acting" with 10-15 metres to go, we could've been possibly watching a 9.5....

...and the 200 is his speciality...
the_rudeboy 17-08-2008, 08:31 GB are now 3rd in the medal table. I know it will only be short lived but it's still impressive. :thumbsup:

...and if you calculate it in proportion to population GB is top (nearly) only the Aussies ahead...

BasilRathbon 18-08-2008, 11:13 Hate to lower the tone of the thread, but does anyone else think that Rebecca Adlington bird looks like Steffi Graf in a fat suit?
NEKRO138 18-08-2008, 11:15 Maybe she is Steffi Graf in a fat suit.

Still there after taking another Gold today - the target for the games was to be 8th in the table, so hopefully we can get a few more yet :)
edit: also a very strong chance of a gold from Mark Goodison tommorow as well already, along with good chances of medals in the cycling

Indeed, the only way Goodison can be denied is if he finishes dead last, or sinks; and even then, the Swede has to win the medal race outright to deny him.
It's pretty much nailed on that we will get another two or three golds in the cycling, to boot. This looks like becoming our second-best Olympics in history (after 1908, when we hosted and provided all the judges and referees, which led to such things as a British boxer being declared the winner of a final by his own father acting as the judge.)
Classic quote from Gary Sutton during Hoy's Sprint Semi Final Race 1...
"It's a good job Bourgain had his helmet strapped on, because I think Hoy would have sucked it off as he came past."
Goodison's gold is in the bag; Victoria Pendleton has won the women's sprint cycling gold; and the men's sprint final is being contested between two Brits, so we have now guaranteed our best ever Olympics, 1908 apart.
Fifteen and counting ... I can remember when we came home shamefaced with a grand total of one. I'm loving this. :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
It really is good to see some of the 'poor tax' lottery funding being used to such devastating effect in the velodrome.
A superb performance by the whole of Team GB. I would expect that the government will have to look into extending the spectator capacities at the venues for 2012.
clintonhelle 22-08-2008, 07:17 Hai, the Golden Weekend in this day I feel so happy to spend in my family members. I like so interested to play games in the family. This is a golden oppertuinity to myself.

Highly unlikely to still be there come Sunday afternoon; but let's not forget that our big target this year was to break into the top 8. If we get overtaken for third on the last weekend, that is not going to be a disappointment; just a case for staggering, joyous bewilderment that we were even involved in the competition.
Talking gold medals, a resident where I work was an olympic gold medalist in the womens relay swimming in 1948 when it was in England.
She gets interviewed by a newspaper every few years, more so this year of course.
Marie tells the story about the whole olympic team going over on the boat to England from the US, at that time she was dating Grace Kellys brother, he was on the Olympic rowing team.
She almost got thrown off the team as she was caught drinking on the boat on the way over, but I guess they changed their mind at the last minute and let her swim any how as it was just one drink.
She still has her medal of course mounted on a stand, not quite as nice as the newer ones are now, but impressive.
