If I try to start or restart in "Safe mode" it just will not work!

F8 gets me to the selection screen, I select Safe Mode, a screen of text whizzes by and then I am back to basic start-up again.

This time it will tell me that Windows was not shut down properly and what mode would I like to start in?

If I select Safe Mode I will go round again in circles until I select Normal Windows Start-up.

AdAware and Spybot are giving me a clear report.

Is this an infection or is there another explanation?

Sorry. er ..Windows XP Pro

Have you tried selecting 'last known good configuration' cgksheff?

Take a look at THIS (http://xthost.info/vidster9/HTML/safe_mode.htm) for a bit more info on starting in Safe Mode ;)

[EDIT] Sorry about the link. Updated now

Hmm...I suspect the 'screen of text' is the blue screen of death.

Have you installed and new hardware or software recently? That could be casuing a conflict.

When you get to the options screen (with F8), try one of the other options.
