I grew Charlottes this year, my first ever veg growing apart from runner beans last year and we are chuffed to bits with the results! I planted them in Spring, march ish I think, they took ages to come up and one failed but the rest have been fantastic so far.

Traditionally potatoes were planted on Good Friday as a general guide when to plant them, although I put mine in a week before Easter this year (mid March) - and then covered them up to protect them from the snow! You can also grow them in large pots/bags now if you want them in time for Christmas, although you'll need to grow them somewhere that's frost free - i.e the greenhouse. For preparation (planting March) dig over the ground in the Autumn with plenty of manure.
Re the tomatoes check out the Real Seeds web site, they're really big on tomatoes and feature quite a few that 'can' be grown outside. The downside to that is in a crap summer like this they don't ripen particularly well and they're also susceptible to blight:
