View Full Version : Big Television screen in Peace Gardens
367squadron 28-04-2005, 21:23 Can't we have the big television permanetly somewhere perched on the side of a building like manchester's 'The triangle'? I would look great at the top of fargate as your travelling up. And i think it adds atmosphere to the city centre when people are watching the news etc.
What do you think? Should we ask the council?
I don't think they can afford the licence. It would be nice to have that somewhere, Fargate would be the ideal location I think maybe on the Yorkshire bank building. Could have one on the side of the hotel in the peace gardens so you can watch the news on your lunch.
I must admit, When I was having lunch in the peace gardens last summer I enjoyed watching that giant TV in the nice whether.
redrobbo 29-04-2005, 00:38 Haven't seen the one in Manchester, but have seen the one in Hull. If what 367squadron is suggesting is anything like that one, no thanks. It would be horrible in Fargate.
Ousetunes 29-04-2005, 07:07 I hate shopping at the best of times and the last thing I need whilst walking down Fargate is the drone of inane, pathetic, skull-numbing poison that is Daytime Television, wafting through the air.
Can you imagine what we'd get? Lisa? Straight Eye for The Queer Guy? Flog-it? Richard and Booby? It gets worse: the choons of Urban dross courtesy of MTV and 'Pimp My Ride' (geddit?). Then there's Holidays From Hell, Britain's Worst Driver - infact anything from ITV1, 2 and - as if we needed more - 3.
Howsabout the missus being stopped in her tracks on the way to Marks and Sparks because Emmerdale or Drossenders has just come on TV. Likewise, (us) blokes and football....,
No, not for me. Keep this garbage locked safely behind one's own front door.
I think most of the screens only show BBC stuff. So it is usually News24 or big sporting events.

Hey, "Pimp My Ride", is one of my favourite programs.
I totally agree about ITV though, channel of the no-brainers, though Channel 5 is catching up.
SheffieldSean 30-06-2005, 23:28 With Live8 happening this Saturday I decided to peruse the BBC website in advance. Several big cities, and even Hull, are showing the event on big screens installed in their city centres. And who is noticable by their absence? Well, no surprises there at all. As far as I can ascertain, these big screen televisions are in partnership with the BBC and show News24, as well as big sporting events like Wimbledon. Does anyone know if there are plans to install one, eventually, sometime in the next decade or two. Perhaps the city council are going to buy a wooden cabinet ex-rental telly (without a working telextext facility because the text button fell inside the remote control)) and plan to hang it from the side of the new hotel?
For events such as live8 a giant screen would be fantastic.
Don't think i'd like it droning on all day every day though.

Yet again evidence that Sheffield is run like a 2nd class city.
Why don't you just watch it at home, then it won' t have to be inflicted on the rest of us ?
Don't like the idea on it being there all the time if one goes up they all will want a giant screen on the side of the building to advertise. Then it will look like these poor sci-fi films
No thanks:suspect:
I'm not too keen on Meadowhell's video wall, but I can see the attraction for one in the peace gardens, although only if it's displays are chosen very carefully
by that I mean to televise specific events like live8, wimbledon etc (possibly national footy and cup matches)
SheffieldSean 01-07-2005, 13:15 As I understand these screens are run by the BBC for big cultural events like Live8 and the 'crown jewels' sports like Wimbledon and the World Cup. So, we'd be spared adverts and crappy day time television. I simply think that for any city to have pretensions of being a major player it needs to keep up with other cities and we're all too often stuck behind. I mean, even Hull's got one...!
Agent Orange 01-07-2005, 15:38 I agree that it would be great to have a big screen in the peace gardens for big events such as wimbledon etc etc, but to have one in there permanently would totally ruin the peace gardens.
as for fargate, maybe a times square type makeover would be nice?! can see it now, massive videa walls above virgin, yorkshire bank and that building with the annoying siren.
The Yorkshire Bank on Fargate is one of the few old buildings in town, why would anyone want to cover it up with a big TV screen ?
muddycoffee 01-07-2005, 15:42 Is it just me here who thinks that a large television in town is a hideous idea. We are already assailed with TV waffle everywhere we go. Sometimes it's hard to find a pub where you can have a bit of piece and quiet.
Save us from the devil that is the cathode ray tube. :gag:
You turn the Blimmin' radio on and all they're talking about is Big Brother.
No Way No Thanks!
It is so lovely to see people in the peace gardens sitting in the sun and playing in the fountains and the kids screams of delight. To my mind this is far more desirable than ranks of zombies staring at a huge television with dribble falling from their open mouths.
Also, are these hundreds of people going to stand in the peace gardens all day without going to the loo, of will the fountain come-in handy ?
SheffieldSean 01-07-2005, 21:31 For what seems to be the forty-eighth time since I joined this thread, this screen would not show commercial television, so no ITV daytime nor any of the moronic antics in the Big Brother house. I don't watch this at home, nor would I want to watch it of an evening in the city centre. However, I do think there's a case to be made for a screen in the new millennium square development. Such a facility would be an amazing addition to the city, allowing residents to enjoy genuine moments of national unity; Live8, the World Cup, Wimbledon etc together with fellow Sheffielders. Every other major city in the country has got one except ours.
Totally agree with SheffieldSean, if the big screen is used very selectively then I think it would be an asset. What better way to share an evening with lots of friends watching a special one-off event? It would get people out of the house and using the city centre for a comunity purpose - isn't that part of what the regeneration of the city centre is all about?
For events such as live8 watching it whilst having a big party in the peace gardens would be almost as good as actually being there.
Big England football matches would be great too - I bet you could get a really good atmosphere.
clogginchris 01-07-2005, 23:25 I walked through Manchester City Centre last week, and on a beautiful, warm summers evening, people were sitting in the Triangle (a fantastic urban open space in its own right), watching and listening to an opera. It was a fantastic atmosphere - calm, peaceful and everyone enjoying themselves. Sheffield is really missing out on this experience.
hey been a resident of the peace gardens a big screen would be a top addition it worked when we had the snooker so why don't we go for a moment in history and have the live8 out to the people
skyfitsboy 28-07-2005, 23:38 Check out Liverpools big city centre screen here (http://pictures.g7smy.dyndns.org/album/15/157/5654) , something like this in Sheffield would be great:thumbsup:
 What did they put it there for? Why isn't it in a public space that people actually stop in?
Indeed. Williamson Square would have been much better. Though funnily enough, the area where the screen is DOES become a space where people stop when big events are on - Live 8 for instance. But yes, it is a curious location most of the time.

The picture on that screen is sufficient reason for not having one here. Having blathering Blair waffling on at me whilst trying to enjoy a few moments rest in the Peace Gardens is a pretty dismal prospect

I thought the TV screen to be rather cheesy.
It's also just another way of letting advertisers mess with our minds.
K.
Like they do on manchester's Big Screen, it would be great to see short films and experimental stuff in a public space.
Speaking of which, does anyone know of any bars around sheffield where they screen short films?
