For no apparent reason my laptop screen goes black (whether on battery or mains power). When I close the lid so that it almost shuts and open it up again the screen reappears. It can stay o.k for 10 seconds or even an hour before it happens again. Sometimes it happens so frequently that I have to switch off. If I boot it up again the problem normally persists. If I leave it switched off for a few hours it normally behaves o.k for a while.
I have wiped the harddrive and re-installed everything, but to no avail. I have checked the power settings and there seems to be no problem there.
This is mind boggling.

ANY IDEAS ?

What make of laptop is it? Some (especially Toshibas) have a power-save feature in the BIOS which over-rides any settings you may have in Windows.

My laptop does the same. Not so much a problem more an irratation. As previously stated check the bios to make sure that there arn't any settings that can be changed in there. But if the problem is the same as mine (and it does sound simlar), than its simply some poor connections to the display (its not worth me paying to have it repaired).

What's your model by the way? Wondering if it's anything to do with the build, mine's a Gericom.

I had this problem and eventually the screen refused to come on at all. I had to get the screen replaced and haven't had a problem since so it may be your screen that has developed a fault. Try plugging it into a monitor next time it goes, if the monitor works then its deff the screen that is faulty.

Are you saying the screen goes black when you nearly shut the lid??? I am confused! it's supposed to!?! or do you mean something else...

Ahh, after reading it for the 30th time It now makes sense!

Reet, when it goes black, if you look reall really hard at the screen is there a very feint image? It sounds like you have a dodgy lid sensor switch. sonewhere near the hinge will be a realy small switch. when it goes off prod it!!

AHA !
Me thinks you are right. I can see a very faint image.
Will try prodding it with a big stick or something next time it happens.

Yes, I can now confirm.
It is the screen switch.
Thanks for all the great advice!

Any D.I.Y trick to try fix it for now ???
