If you had like….a thousand a4 word documents that had both text and images and wanted to compile them into one big document, lets say you are creating an encylopedia for your own use….what would be best way to make it searchable (ala full sentences, not one word using Ctrl F) and easy to use….this is not for a web based thing, just for own use and reference.

Just a big word document?
PDF?
Powerpoint?
Microsoft Publisher?
Dreamweaver?

I use Treepad Plus http://www.treepad.com/treepadplus/

I don't embed images but just put links to them in the text and they then open in your default image viewer for the file type. The text and formatting compiles into a database and it's easy to insert bookmarks and cross links etc. search facilities are reasonably good, but better I think in the business edition.

The nice thing about it is that you can compile a copy protected ebook from the Treepad file - the main disatvantage I found is that you haven't a forward and back button as you would have in .pdf or.html format.
