Hi everybody,

I'm from the Czech Republic (Brno) and I have friends in Rotherham. Last year I spent my Summer Holiday there. This year I finished my University studies and I want to move in to Sheffield or Rotherham. My girlfriend will go with me.

Can you please write me something about my possibilities conected with flat or house renting? How long can it take to move in to new house from contacting estate agent, how much is commission for estate agent, is easy to find something cheap to live in. In fact I don't know anything what should I do if I want to rent a house (flat, room).

I will very much appreciate your help

Thank you

ahoj Tomas

Your English is spot on!

House renting can be a minefield in Sheffield. We viewed a property available at a local Housing Association and were amazed that it was available to let! The condition was diabolical to say the least.

To save money, you could rent a double room in a large house and share that with your girlfriend. It would mean that you shared the rest of the house facilities (kitchen, bathroom, etc) with the other residents. These are generally available to students, although workers also make use of them.

You will probably need a month's rent in advance and a bond - generally the same cost as a month's rent. If you look at the section called "Accommodation Available" you should get some idea.

Good luck!

Thank you very much. Thats what I wanted to know. That "bond and months rent in advance system" is almost the same as in our country.

But I have one more question: How long can i take to rent something. Lets say that I will arrive to Sheffield on Monday and I will find something suitable to rent on Tuesday (and of course I will agree with conditions). When can I move in? Is there a lot of paperwork and formalities? To be honest I spent last September and part of October in Thrybergh country park in tent and if possible I don't want to do it again :-)

So is possible to arrive, find something to rent, make agreement and move in in one week?

Thank you for your answers

Tom

Once you've found somewhere, it takes no time at all to move in. Usually, it's immediate.
You usually take out a lease of either 6 months or a year.

Let's put it this way, my brother found a room in a shared house in a day - the rent was sorted out almost straight away, and he moved in a week later.

Good luck!
