I tried to get this info from forum members ages ago but got short shift from someone who probably tried exactly what I tried, I am a Wednesday supporter after all.:hihi:
My grandfather, who was a very strong Unitedite had a mate called Albert Hunter who my grandad told me had played for SUFC, Arsenal, Brighton and England.
Albert had an article written about him in The Star when it was noticed by the powers that be at the lane that he had become SUFC's oldest ever employee, I am certain that it mentioned his playing days, he was a steward in the upper tier of the old John Street stand when he was well into his 80's, so that would have been in the 1980's
I have googled but to no avail, but have an idea. Grandad was born in 1899 so Albert would not have been that far away age wise, might have been a little older. I wondered if he played for Utd during the First World War when the reqular players were mostly away on active service, this could also account for his England appearances. I have drawn a blank on Arsenal and Brighton but it's such a long time ago.
Grandad was captain of Heeley Friends who played on the rec next to where the convent used to be on East Bank Road, they fed a few players to UTD including Albert. Albert used to frequent the still standing pub nicknamed 'The Roundhouse' just above what was the Tudor cinema in Heeley.
Well that's all I can tell you, sorry to be a pain in the arse but I am very interested, and as I previously said I am a Wednesdayite. :hihi:
