Yes - he's great. An australian friend bought me Bushfire Fairytales. I love his melodies and his lyrics. All his songs seem to have the same distinct sound and great use of percussion.

I heard there was a new album out

and yes - I'm surprised more people haven't heard of him.

yeh, it's called 'in between dreams' (quite possibly even better than his previous 2!).

If you like the other 2, u will LOVE this 1...definitely worth getting.

Hi Lickable,

Jack Johnson!

You can find out more here:

http://www.jackjohnsonmusic.com/default.asp

The Rolling Stones writes:

" Like G. Love, Jack Johnson plays groovy acoustic funk. The difference is that where G. Love relies on hip-hop, Johnson's points of reference are a bit more eclectic, incorporating lite jazz and classic singer-songwriter motifs (including interesting vocal experiments a la Joni Mitchell and Tim Buckley). It's all held together by earthy rock backing, and topped off with a voice that at times sounds enough like Mose Alison to convince listeners that maybe Johnson really has the goods. Before embarking on a musical career, Johnson was a successful professional surfer."

Well I'd never heard of him, so did a search on google and found a few sites, but more importantly found one with a video of his, Sitting, Waiting, Wishing.
What a great voice this guy has, am definitely looking into his style of music now

If you like Jack Johnson, you may also like John Mayer - he's released 2 albums, Room For Squares and Heaviest Things, both well worth checking out.

I had heard of him but didn't know who he was, because in 'Anchorman' Will Ferral names his muscles Jack Johnson and Tom O'Leary! Now i know who he is and am quite intreged about his music. Gonna go to Fopp on my dinner and have a listen!

I'm gonna see him in Manchester on Friday. MEN Arena which I think will be too large a venue for Acoustic music. He's great though. His new CD is the soundtrack to the cartoon "Curious George". It's really good and went in the US album charts at number one. May not be underrated for much longer. If you like Jack Johnson you might wanna give Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals a listen. Seriously underrated!

I'm going to see him in Manchester on Friday too as a belated Christmas present - can't wait. I was quite surprised he was in the arena though, I didn't think that many people had heard of him and would be going?

Someone else mentioned John Mayer, who I also really like, and Pete Murray is along similar lines. Will have a look for Ben Harper.

I thought his performance at the Brits was fantastic. After all those overblown performances with hundreds of people on stage (e.g. Kanye West - even KT Tunstall had a "tribe" of dancers behind her), Jack Johnson just sat there with his guitar and showed what a real musician can do!

I'd never even heard of him till I saw him perform at the Brits last week. Thought his song was amazing and am off to get his album this weekend. I hope his other stuff is just as good !

I first got into Jack Johnson after a friend went to New Zealand - he's pretty well known over there. I bought 'In-between Dreams' right away, then nabbed myself some tickets for Notts Arena. I'm not sure what I'm going to make of the gig. As much as I love his music, I also love a bit of hussle and bustle and movement when I see a band.

Yes I know what you mean. Its difficult to get any atmosphere when the only person on stage is sat really calmly playing a guitar. You need a bit of jumping about and stuff.

He was truly fantastic on Friday night, it was quite possibly my best Christmas present this year!!

It could have been even better if we didn't have a prize muppet and his girlfriend sat in front of us. All those thousands of people, and they had to sit in front of us.. ahh well! A brilliant night other than that minor detail!

Jack Johnson is Brilliant

How exactly? As guitar players go, he's average at best. He's not a very good singer, and he's an awful songwriter. I can't stop cringing every time I hear the truly awfull 'where all the good people go' or whatever it's called.

Overall, his music is dross that caters for the lowest common denominator.

In your opinion!!!!

I do hate it when people say that, my Son used to say it when I would play something. He would say why are you listening to that group, there crap. I would reply that just because it isn’t to your taste, doesn’t make it crap!

Its to do with your ears and eyes and “soul”. What sounds good to you may sound awful to me.
The attributes that you consider to be "Awesome" for your favourites make others want to vomit. The fact that you consider an artist to be "dross" does not make him so, It’s just your opinion. The way someone plays a guitar, stands on stage, looks at the audience, writes lyrics or sings is what connects or doesn’t connect you to a particular artist.
So when you say that you can’t see why I like Jack Johnson, I accept that. My ears hear him differently to you. I hear things in his lyrics you don’t.

The strange thing is, who likes what, why and when is all totally random, in that you will like many of my favourite artists and I will like many of yours and visa versa and to cap it all, it all changes as you age. When I was young you would have had to strap me to a chair to get me to listen to Jazz. Now I am older I nearly like it.

Isn’t Music intriguing, maybe that’s why it affects us so much?

Very intelligent post, lostrider. Gypo has obviously heard JJ's singles in passing on the radio and formed an opinion based upon that. Really ****** me off when people perceive Johnson as some wishy washy James Blunt-alike as it's so off far of the mark it's untrue. Gypo actually has good taste in music, too judging by his previous posts bigging up the likes of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, too who ar eamongst my favourite artists. Just goes to prove your point. And five years ago I would prolly never have listened to Johnson, but as you say, the years changes you (how old do I feel now?!). Each to their own as you say.

Jack Johnson is such a bland musician. I'd quite happily mention him in the same breath as James Blunt, Katie Melua, Jamie Cullum, Daniel Powter etc...
To say he is "the most underrated artist currently" I find difficult to comprehend!? Despite my dislike for the aforementioned artists, I'd have to say that they are all more accomplished musicians than Johnson...

I get what you're saying, it is all opinions.

But Jack Johnson isn't even trying to push any boudaries or challenge opinions, he's just making sickly sweet music I'd expect to hear at a barbeque full of middle-aged types.

It's not even that I dislike guitar music; I've always loved 'one-man-and-his-guitar' acts like Leadbelly, Billy Bragg, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. The difference between them and Jack Johnson is they had a great lyrical talent.

I've heard his album too, not just the singles, and I thought it was truly awful. There's nothing I hate more than musicians who adopt the 'music-by-numbers' approach.

Learn to comprehend it, 10 months on from that comment I think i've got a pretty good case for being right considering his great success at the moment.
