Have noticed over the past couple of days that workmen have started digging in roe woods opposite the northern general hospital was wondering if any one could throw any light on whats happening in there. Roe woods used to be a favourite place of mine and my brothers when we were a lot younger when i believe it was more commonly known as seven ponds we spent many a happy hour catching frogs anyone have memories of the woods if anyone has information relating to the digging would be pleased to hear from you i do hope they dont tear it all up and start building houses on it that would be a crime.

I to used to play in the seven ponds catching frogs :loopy: and remember the woods being larger than they are now days, though i,m corrected that they are the same.
They could be removing the allotments in theror something, i can't see them building there as i would have thought the land underneath is to unstable due to the amount of water.
You never know though, I would ask my brother as his house runs into Roe wood but we don't talk now days so i won't bother with that:mad:
Can you remember the amount of familys that the woods used to attract in the 60s, it used to be full especially on Sundays.

I wouldn't worry too much. Roe woods is ancient woodland, so as far as I am aware, legally protected. The excavations may well have something to do with measures to protect areas, improving drainage, etc.
If I find out any more, I'll let you know.

Are they archaeologists ? There is an ancient camp/fort of some kind up there.

:cool:I remember roe woods as a child, used to live on Aldfield way which had an entrance at the end. My dad used to go balmy if he found we had been playing in there...hence the attraction,we had dens and all sorts.
Loved the ponds...collecting frogspawn and catfish and taking them home and keeping them in old sinks in the garden. Picking bunches of bluebells and then brambles. We seemed to know every inch and all the hiding places, all the streams and stepping stones. Sometimes we would go right through and go to the stables and have a riding lesson, that was brilliant! That road came out near the Mojo club as I remember.
The summers seemed so long and hot then.
Ah HAPPY DAYS!!
