Fellow Sheffielders
I have a Latitude CPx series laptop with a faulty keyboard that does not recognise when certain keys are pressed, eg the diagonal row of keys 8 i k , etc.
The laptop is out of warranty, and as keen as Dell are to charge me £125 for a replacement keyboard, Abdul is a little too frugal for that.
Anyone know where I can get it repaired on the cheap?
My thanks to you all

Take the offending keys off and clean the contact underneath.
Else try ebay for a key one.
:)
If I was to take a stab in the dark I would suspect it to be a dry joint since the entire row is out which is evident due to the layout of the keys on the keyboard from what you say.
Oh yes, I'm certain it is John.
I've noticed this problem on several different Dell laptops.
The trouble is, the laptop is out of warranty, so Dell will only provide a chargeable repair / replacement - and I don't think it's worth £125.
I take it that you are not brave enough to get a soldering iron out and do a spot of DIY on it.
Anyway, I can't see it costing anywhere near what DELL has quoted to do the work some where in Sheffield. Don't know a place but I don't think it should take much more than 20 minutes to fix that type of fault unless the fault turns out to be something more serious.
Worst case scenario, you could always plug in an exernal keyboard and use that.
Laptop keyboards are not that difficult to replace, there is usually a picture of a keyboard on the bottom of the laptap indicating which screws to take out, do a search on ebay just for the keyboard

Bloody hell, that's cheap for Dell.
When the screen on our olde Inspiron died (just out of warranty also) they wanted to charge us £700 to replace the damned thing. Ended up buying a new screen from a company in Scotland for £250 (inclusive of P&P) and fitted it myself in less than 10 mins.
Dell suck! Big time!

Hi John,
I would like to know how to solder that keyboard myself because i have already replaced the keyboard three times already in a span of three years. Can you teach me how?
thanks
