View Full Version : The Blades win and eeerrrmmmm the Owls lose
little_m 13-08-2008, 20:41 Well the Blades showed the S6 laughing stock how to win in the cup.
And no, I didn't go but would like to commend the absolutely first rate commentary on the wireless. :hihi:
UTB
NERVY-OWL 13-08-2008, 20:45 hows it make us a laughing stock losing in the cup? i could be wrong but you lot went out to a lower league side last season, or season before. the cups are unpredictable and as soon as it goes to pens its anyones guess who will win
CorkerSWFC 13-08-2008, 20:50 7 Championship clubs have gone out in the 1st round from what ive seen, which is nearly a 3rd of the entire league, thats telling me that clubs don't value it any more and its more of a hinderence on your early season preperations.
Well done United. Port Vale is one of them teams that can pull an upset.
Terrible attendance tho.
little_m 13-08-2008, 20:53 Well done United. Port Vale is one of them teams that can pull an upset.
Terrible attendance tho.
Thanks Ally.
I did commend you on your Saturday win by the way, and did say we were less than impressive.
The attendance I put down to the exceedingly good commentary on the wireless and the fact I couldn't be arsed. :hihi:
NERVY-OWL 13-08-2008, 20:56 didnt realise 7 had gone out. i cant see it being that high up on many managers list, alot of clubs havent got that bigger a squad anyways. what was the attendance anyway?
NERVY-OWL 13-08-2008, 21:00 that is pretty poor but not many clubs get good attendances in early stages, at least we have had a higher attendance than the blades:D
CorkerSWFC 13-08-2008, 21:00 It was great atmosphere at Hillsborough last night, we were singing brian laws barmy army for 10 mins at a time, i was sweating my arse off lol
Even though it was a crap result it was a proper laugh.
I see we've wasted a last-minute penalty award on a game we were winning anyway. Can't we save them up and use them when we're behind? :D
And I think Corker is right; not only the Premiership but most of the Championship clubs would now prefer that this competition didn't exist. Still, for those who scrape through, there's always the chance of drawing Old Trafford and collecting a bit of money.
(Come to that, if we keep drawing teams that don't care much, we might get lucky and reach the latter stages...)
Well the Blades showed the S6 laughing stock how to win in the cup.
And no, I didn't go but would like to commend the absolutely first rate commentary on the wireless. :hihi:

...Lets hope you go all the way to the semis again, get a hard on about beating leeds, and then, yet again falter at your promotion attempt, Championship furniture = Sheffield United, your on the football leagues asset register you know, full depreciated mind, they cant write you off yet though as there is no place to dump ya!

Oh you can, it's about £450 for a season ticket. :hihi: :hihi:
What about you plum, are you one of the mighty 5000 with a Swillsborough season ticket. :hihi:

I've had a season ticket for 28 years and I've missed about 5 home games during that time, all of them only through illness.
I was also one of the twice as many owls as blades who could be "arsed" to attend our respective first round cup games this week.
Sorry if I'm not a top fan like you are. Perhaps mummy will get you a ticket for the next round.
Stockers 14-08-2008, 09:51 Lets not start the attendances arguement again, lets face it the Pigs started on it a few years ago when we were flying high in the League and 2 Semi Finals of the Cups.
It was all they had at the time, now that little gem has gone its an arguement they can't win (at the moment!!).
Wednesday have always had a decent hardcore of fans but can't pull the big numbers the higher up the league they go (as proven in the 93 season, 2 Cup Finals, 3rd in the League and still couldn't top 30k average).
We've got a more fickle fan base who won't take the sort of tripe Wednesday fans puts up with but when it comes to the big time we can draw in the numbers (as proven the other season in the PL).

Said this before Stockers, but you obviously didn't listen. This "Wednesday didn't get the gates when they were good" and "United got 30k" is a non-argument.
What you're not taking into account is how much football's changed, particularly the Premiership. Attendances in the top flight this decade have boomed. which SWFC missed out on and hence the reason why you managed a 30k average for your brief failure.
Wednesday might not have actually had a 30k average in the early 90s, but in at least one of those seasons (I think it was 91-92) we did have the 4th highest average gate in the entire country behind only Man Utd, Liverpool and the other was either Leeds or Arsenal, a feat which United didn't, and never will achieve. Even then our average was only a shade under 30k, something like 29,800.
To further prove this boom, how come you averaged 30k a couple of years ago for a relegation season, but in your previous spell in the top flight in the early 90s, which was more successful, you were averaging 20k or less?
Sorry, but if you want to start gloating about attendances then history proves that in the long term it's an argument that United aren't ever going to win.

I've heard your excuses before Al but its clamp trap, 92/93 was the first season of the PL, first season of the so called boom.
You lot were flying high, 3rd in the League and in TWO Cup Finals so probably your best Season ever.
Your talk of a boom is all well and good but don't you think a team 3rd in the league and in two cup finals should be drawing more than an average of 29,500 - even in the dark days of the Early 90's?
I think your defence of your team is honourable but holds no water with me, more Wednesday propaganda and manipulation of the true.
You've got a good hardcore but can't draw the numbers, attendances over the last 30yrs have proven this.

*sighs*
So you're arguing against facts and evidence now? As I said, attendances have boomed "this decade". No we didn't average 30k in 1992, but then again only 3 teams in the entire country did - Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal. We even averaged more than the league champions Leeds, so your statement that we can't draw the numbers is nonsensical.
Perhaps you should go and mock Spurs, Everton, Chelsea, Newcastle etc for the fact that they couldn't average 30k for much of the 80s and 90s either?
I see you're not explaining why you were averaging less than 20k for your Premiership spell in that period and 30k the other year. Probably because it proves my point...

the actual facts are you could'nt average 30'000 in your time in the premiership. make excuse after excuse pal but that is a fact.

Did I ever deny that? No. But what I did was present factual evidence as to why we didn't get it in the early 90s, which was his jibe. If you're going to jump into somebody else's argument at least try and understand what it's about first.
Stockers said "when it comes to the big time we can draw in the numbers (as proven the other season in the PL)".
So why did the blades only average 18,985 and 19,562 for Premiership seasons in the 90s, and 30k the other year? As I've pointed out, it's because football's changed in the last decade. Had Wednesday been in the Premiership we'd have been averaging 30k as well. Yet you can try and have a pop at us getting slightly less than a 30k average in 1992, even though it was the 4th highest average in the country at the time and more than what the league champions averaged?

first off all cp i'm not jumping into somebody else arguement. its a public forum. if you want a private arguement you do it in chat or pm's.
what you are failing to say is in the season you slightly got less than 30,000 you finished 3rd and in europe. the season we did average 30,000 we were relegated. the last sheffield team to average over 30,000 was err united again 1973. try to impress us as much as you want cp but it just aint workin.
attendances with united and wendy are swings and roundabouts. but the FACT remains we have averaged over 30,000 in the premiership and you hav'nt.
Jazzybmzoo 20-08-2008, 10:56 Diagnosing a Cretin
Cretinism is a particularly acute affliction affecting a great many people in today's society. Indeed, you may know or have dealings with a cretin on a daily basis.
Extensive research on behalf of The Lancet has uncovered some very interesting, yet simultaneously disturbing evidence of a 'cretinous spike' in Sheffield, S. Yorks. Please note that this is exclusively affecting supporters of Sheffield United Football Club.
Worringly, upon meeting supporters of this organisation, the cretinism is of such an advanced state as to be deemed untreatable.
Symptoms: hypocrisy, no distinguishable sense of humour, misguided sense of social norm (particulalry hierachy), ill judgement, ****e football team.
Observe these examples:

Agree with bladebloke (I'm going to have to go and have a lie down now!). Sheffield football fans always have and always will argue with each other. It's called banter. Sometimes it gets heated, sometimes it goes too far, and unfortunately you often get the "little keyboard warrior" type posts which generally consist of a single line of either an insult or complete drivel (we all know who these idiot posters are).
At the end of the day though, we love it, that's why we're on here. Imagine how boring it must be to support a team with no serious local rivals such as Plymouth or Carlisle.

Rocklegend 21-08-2008, 15:37 so boring but you feel the need to add.
its a sheffield football forum for christ sake. what do you want to talk about "crop rotation in the 15th century" if you dont like a particular thread ignore it. its as easy as that.
Don't know about crop rotation but theres plenty of CRAP rotation at Elland Road.:D
little_m 21-08-2008, 16:05 Never gonna happen, mate.

(Sound familiar?)
'That's 30 Euro's for half an hour.'

mark1971 24-08-2008, 06:42 It's ok lm, one day who knows? You might post something genuinely amusing.
But until 2032, why not get with the programme & start talking about how great Wednesday are & how UTTERLY scummy the Blunts are.
Then, everyone is happy.
Job done.
I find that Lm does sometimes genuinely post amusing posts but because you get offended or upset about them because they are aimed at you're beloved wednesday you resort to (scummy) posts!
Still, for those who scrape through, there's always the chance of drawing Old Trafford and collecting a bit of money.
Will Ashburton Grove do instead? :hihi:
