Hey, vielleicht sollen wir einen "Deutsch Forum" club starten und eventuel auch einen Stammtisch hier in Hillsborough? Drei deutsch sprechenden gibt es schon....

Would anybody be interested in joining a German speaking Forum Club if it was allowed? We could have our own German speaking moderator in Kristian and meet up regulary to practice!

Not actually German but have clocked up two and a bit years there. Would love to live there again but tied to Hillsborough so rely on German telly on satellite to keep the language going Definitely need more speakig practice as fluency is slipping so I'm definitely up for a Stammtisch sessions. Fancy it?

I'm in Germany too (have been for 8 years now) so a bit far away to make it to the Stammtisch, but it's interesting to see how many forumers have a German connection. Any more out there?

Feel free to pass on any technical/grammatical questions - I can refer them to my 3 young children who are always more than happy to point out my own mistakes!

Well, keeping it English so the moderators are happy - there are Germans living in Hillsborough, so the Stammtisch is in with a chance :) *And* I own a very funny (fully choreographed) German a-capella version of 'Hit me baby one more time' :) If there are still thoughts about the Stammtisch...I'm new to the forum, and not sure I've got time to organise it, but happy to join in...

Also happy to lend/give away (depending on what it is) German materials (books, magazines, films) if anybody feels like practising - send me a pm.

Thanks for the welcome :)

I have to admit, after nearly 11 years here (7 in Sheffield), I don't *sound* - or even feel - particularly German, but seeing as part of my work involves *being* German, I can't really say I'm not :) Even though I've taught adult ed, I had no idea there were this many interested people around. Although I am fully used to comments like:

'Oh, you're German? I've been to Germany once - we stopped at a welcome break on the A1 (M1 equivalent) - do you know it?'

:)

I've chatted to a few Americans online who have said (upon discovering my nationality) I know X person in London; do you know them?

I can kind of see how they get confused, given that a lot of Americans know very little about English life (I'll state at this point that I 'know' quite a few of our American ex-pats and visitors on this site, and this is not a reflection on them at all!) However, for someone talking to someone from anoher European country of a roughly similar size, I find that amazing! :D

I got the gist of this Dan, but must confess I struggles with some bits and resorted to Google! It translated it as

I has letze month to Bochum gereisen (and also letze year), and wishes now I my German to refurbish. November German guests remain with us, and it would be very good to speak correct German with them. Count me inside!

Der einzige Deutsche, den ich von der Schule erinnern an kann, ist "Wie spät ist es?", das dieser Haufen des Abfalls eine Babel Fischübersetzung ist - eine neue Sprache ist im Prozeß verursacht worden. "GermaBabel".

TimmyR
14-05-2005, 10:21
anyone attempting to translate using babel fish will only spout rubbish. I tried it in an essay once and showed it to a german. They laughed. Better off just writing it yourself with a dictionary!

DanSumption
14-05-2005, 10:34
If you want real rubbish, try the Bablizer (http://www.tashian.com/multibabel/), it is absolutely hilarious (sorry, this should probably go in "time wasters"). For example, I just entered tim_rutter's post, above, into the Babelizer and, excluding Chinese, Japanese & Korean, it came out with the following:

All such that to try, sprinkling the fish of the confusion, decree translate only applications of an excess. I controlled in a test in the past and I showed to him German. They had laughed. To improve the interior added to the right of the interior of the writing if with a predetermined rotation!

Grüß Gott alle zusammen.

Even though the SF is one of my major resource for information about Sheffield I have never seen this thread before.

I am a German native speaker, currently doing a postgraduate study here in Sheffield.

If the Stammtisch will ever happen I would also like to join, however as I am from the south of Germany (from Baden-Württemberg) I have quite a strong accent but I could try to help you keeping fit in German. (I am really surprised that so many of you have such good german knowledge)

SOunds like this could work out afterall. I used to go to a stammtisch whilst at sheffield uni. It works a lot better if a few native germans go. I alos used to do tandem learning - you know the score, speak for half the time in english and half the time in german. We could maybe do something along those lines.

Anyone free for an evening next week? We could meet in a pub somewhere relatively central (and reasonably quiet to allow conversation!). Any suggestions?

The Dev Cat is always good, especially as it sells Wiesbier. Admittedly not very great but will add to the german theme.

I spent my first years in Germany up in the extreme north learning nice clear high German (except when people spoke Platt or Danish!). When I moved to Baden-Württemberg a few years ago it was like having to learn German all over again! And even neighbouring villages seem to have their own dialects.

But that's what language learning is all about I suppose, and the only way to learn the authentic version is by conversing with the natives - complete with accent. I soon discovered that no-one here speaks remotely like my O'level teacher did!!

Viel Spaß beim Stammtisch. Schade, dass ich nicht dabei sein kann.

Coming soon at the showroom:

SOPHIE SCHOLL - THE FINAL DAYS (12) In German with English Subtitles
Germany 2005 Dir. Mark Rothemund 1hr 57mins

Sophie Scholl – The Final Days is the heroic and devastating true life story of German resistance icon Sophie Scholl. The film features a stunning, award-winning performance from rising German star Julia Jentsch (The Edukators, Downfall). Set in Munich 1943, as Hitler waged war across Europe, the ‘Weiße Rose’ (White Rose), Germany’s most famous resistance group dedicated their energies and passion into spreading the word on the atrocities of the Third Reich and the Nazi regime. Sophie Scholl, the only female member, would be the one to leave her mark on German history. On 18 February 1943, Scholl and her brother Hans (Fabian Hinrichs) were caught distributing leaflets at the university and arrested. Shot in chronological order, the film charts the events of the next few days as Scholl is interrogated by Gestapo officer Mohr (Gerald Alexander Held). Highly recommended.

Sounds good. A friend of mine is playing a gig at the Forum at around 11pm that night, so if anyone fancies carrying on later...

Just wondered if the "stammtisch" still existed. We're coming over to Sheffield next week and wondered if anyone was interested in meeting up. We have kids so if you also have kids and you want them to meet up with other German speaking kids let us know.

I am fluent in german and don't get much practice in using the language so that is a great pity, luckily my sister in law is swiss so we have a natter now and again in swiss german.
pm if any one is interested in chatting or writing in german.
I would deffinitely be interested in joining an ex pats german club too as i had previously with some german friends a decade or more a go.

I'm really interested in chatting in German and also seeing German films at the Showroom. Anyone else out there still interested?

I can't contact anyone who posted on this subject before as I don't have enough points!! Urrrgh.

I just got back from Switzerland, where the Schweizerdeutsch was all but incomprehensible but I still got good mileage out of my smattering of regular German. Am definitely up for film nights, German chats, whatever - mail me (dan at sumption dot org) if you can't PM me.

Hi,
I'm from Germany (21 years old) and I'm interested in tandem learning.

Is there someone who wants to practise German?

The idea is to meet and to spent half of the time speaking German and half of the time speaking English.

Hi there,

I'm from Germany as well and I'd like to meet up with some people in my age group for partying, travelling, learning english. By the way, I'm male, 23 and come from Berlin ;-)

Who invented this rule that you can't write a private message unless you wrote 10 comments? I'd like to get in touch with the author of the previous post.

Ich würde auch gerne mal ein paar Deutsche hier treffen!?
(Translation: I'd like to meet germans as well)
