View Full Version : Malteasers -£350,000 SUFC sponsorship
The Maltese Tourist Board is paying Sheffield United £350,000 for a year's sponsorship according to the press statement in Malta.
That would help to fund a few bobbies on matchdays in the city which the non-football fans pay for!

The football club pays taxes too - probably more than you, so do you want them to complain about the police on non-football duties?
greendragon 13-08-2008, 13:38 Actually, Football clubs pay for policing. Thats why there you see very few police in the ground as its cheaper to employee SIC stewards.
holster100 13-08-2008, 13:44 Actually, they only pay for policing inside the ground. They don't currently pay IN FULL for the huge Police operation that goes on outside the ground and at the station on every match day.
I don't agree with them paying more though. Just think of the tax the players pay on their huge wages. It all balances out.
They actually only pay for policing in and around the ground - though police forces tend to 'bulk up' there presence in city centres and the like on matchdays.
My point still stands though.
Actually, this thread is turning into an 'actually' competition! :hihi:
matsalleh 13-08-2008, 14:32 Malta is a dump anyway,so I can't see that attracting many tourists.

Malta is a gorgeous place, love it, will always keep going back to Qawra. Great people, good weather, what more do you need?
Captain_Scarlet 13-08-2008, 14:52 Malta's gorgeous and full of history! And they speak English ;)
splodgeyAl 13-08-2008, 17:18 here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7553875.stm) is an article from the BBC about the costs of policing football matches. there is a chart that show the proportion paid by the club and the taxpayer. of those listed, only portsmouth pays the full cost.
also (caution: apeculation ahead) the business side of many clubs is probly registered in some tax haven so as to "manage their tax burden" more to their own benefit

No it really is a dump, take it from someone who live's here. Venture out of Qawra a bit and see for yourself.
And they speak English ;) When it suits them.
I just know the boyfriend hates the logo on the kit!
I think its quite good that we have got a sponsor! even west brom who are a premiership team don't have one yet!!!

Another one to add to all those other world class players you've had from your academies in China, Hungary, Brazil etc. Oh wait there's not been any! :help:

Unlikely. Apart from Michael Mifsud does anybody know of any decent Maltese players EVER?

Not bitterness it's fact.
Look at the footballing history of where these academies are based. Apart from obviously Brazil what Legends of the footballing world have China, Hungary and Malta combined ever given us in their umpteen years of football involvement? Puskas and that's it!
Even if you came across anyone decent in Brazil you'll end up going for the wrong one a la Maradona/Sabella scenario.
SteveBlade 14-08-2008, 16:23 Its only a sponsor, if they do an average/decent job it doesnt really matter tbh.
Puzzles me how sponsors can measure the results of such localized sponsorship.Perhaps by monitoring the arrivals at the airport in Malta and asking if they are United supporters.
My original point about clubs paying the going rate for external policing still stands. It seems most unfair for non-footballing members of the public to not only fund the high cost of policing the city on match days but also to be deprived of essential police coverage in the suburbs.
Looking at the high wages paid to the squad the clubs do not appear short of a bob or two.

a) China the team we've bought the area has 20 million people, football is at a very young stage in china. there already in the top flight after 2 seasons. sufc have the gateway to young raw talent
b) The Hungary club we have bought previously appeared in many European cup finals (now the champions league.) again they get promoted this season, and again we'll have access to the young raw talent, (Like we have got at the lane already, yes we have our 1st young lad training there already a midfield player, so the rewards are actually starting o come already

Meanwhile, back in the real world, I think you'll find that they were once runners up in the Cup Winners Cup in 1975. That's it.

An a bold bloke was telling one and all he was going to buy Wednesday.
I heard it's all an embarrassing mistake, Sheard's son told him he wanted a cowboy outfit for his birthday and they seem to have got their wires crossed (olden but golden :) )

Well, there's this lovely thing we have nowadays called the internet where potential sponsors can look at, and communicate with, potential targets. They can monitor results and look at how the business is being run, contacting the owners for more information around the status of the club in a finacial capacity.

Top flight Chinese league is hardly even football league quality, didn't they get battered 7-0 in a recent friendly against Chelsea reserves?
