....just found out that our family lived and worked at the Philadelphia Steel Works, Sheffield in the 1840s - yes MANY years ago! - but cannot find any information.
Does anyone know where the works were - or any other details?

I think they were at Penistone road at the side of what is now Osbourne Mushet, I have William Eadon tilter at philadelphia works 1841-51,the wife's ggg
The 1876 directory gives it at 117 Penistone rd by the side of Albert Terrace Rd. the steel works are not listed. ;)

The 1852 Sheffield Trade Directory gives this information:
Philadelphia Steel Works Co. (W. & S. Butcher)
Shear steel manufacturers, and tilters and rollers
Penistone Road
Henry Walker, manager
