View Full Version : Software installation help
I recently gave my stepfather a copy of adobe photoshop elements version 2,(free with camera)off he went all excited eager to load it up on his computer and get artistic, however a few hours later he rang to say it wouldn't install,i tested it on my computer earlier and it was fine (have photoshop 7 so didn't need it)
Told him it should autorun, but to try ,my computer,d drive ect,but all it says is no disk in d drive, his music cds play fine.
He is running xp (as am i) i suspect a problem with his cd drive, but why would music cd's play?
Be glad of any advice, would love to solve it for him,he is just getting into computers at the age of 75!
(ps should add i'm trying to help him over the phone,so can't actually see what he or his computer is doing!)
Thanks
Might be worth trying to get precise error messages if any from him....
Otherwise might be daft but is Photoshop Elements on a DVD and he has a CD player? Also is the CD damaged or has it got dirt on the underside. Might be worth checking at least it's a few less things it can be.
Interesting...it could be a problem with the CD drive.
Some drives (especially older ones, or ones with dodgy lasers) may be able to read one type of optical media, but not another.
For instance, we had a Dell laptop with DVD-ROM drive that could read CDs, but not DVDs. Dell replaced the drive and all was well.
dvd/cd thing is a good point.....never thought of that...surely its a cd though..isn't it?
don't think, from what i can gather he's getting any error msgs, just his d drive refusing to acknowledge any disk.

It's a fairly new computer he has,(his not too helpful son got it for him. mmmmmm!!)
If it is fairly new, we can make the following assumptions:
1) It will have a DVD-ROM at least
2) The machine (or its components) will be under some sort of warranty
Is the optical drive able to read any data CDs? If not, I would suggest contacting technical support dept of whoever built the PC.

Think tech support is a good idea, however reading between the lines,a mate of his sons has built or refurbished it for him,but it was fully tested.
he hasn't got any other data cd's,but he gave his friend the disk to try on his machine and he told him although it worked it was unsuitable for xp,so as you can see he is getting very conflicting advice,i do suspect a fault has occured with his d drive,
would be nice to be able to tell him different though.
Ok...I would still recommend testing with other data CDs though.
Many years ago, we had problems with a CD-ROM drive that would not read Macromedia CDs; other ones worked fine...
That optical drive is still in use today!

Think what i need to do is give him a selection of my disks, get him to try them and see how he gets on.
There is nothing else that could be causing it is there?like a setting on his machine?
I even asked him if he had the disk in the right way round!!
You said it plays music CDs..
When a music CD is played, is the music CD recognised by Windows? Eg, you can open Windows Explorer, and the CD will be recognised as a music CD?
I just want to check that the IDE data cable (which connects the CD-ROM drive to the motherboard) is connected properly, and that the audio isn't just being played via the smaller audio out cable...

Ahh i see what you mean,i will have to check that with him, very much a possibility.
The problem i have is i'm only in contact via phone, and he knows nothing about computers and i only know what iv'e picked up along the way,it's very much a case of the blind leading the blind!!
Thanks for your help,i will ring him tomorrow and update the situation.
Let me know if you get it working. If so, I'll send you the £500 invoice for my consultancy fees via recorded delivery.
