View Full Version : Presenter on radio sheffield wykewatson 11-08-2008, 23:39 does anyone remember michael cook late of radio sheffield. he did a talk programme and could be very abrupt.was amusing too. Plain Talker 12-08-2008, 09:11 Yes, he could be a bit abrupt, but he had a very sharp wit and an extremely dry sense of humour. Didn't he have Parkinson's Disease, or something? Damon 12-08-2008, 16:24 He also used to present the Look North Sports Report on Saturday tea time telly with Eddie Waring. I mainly remember it as something you had to sit through before Dr Who came on. Treatment 12-08-2008, 16:40 I remember him, I was only wondering yesterday what became of him . He used to occasionally DJ at the Craisy Daisy (circa 1973 ?). He was a good presenter, in my opinion. It is coming back to me slowly, his name was Cooke, he wore rather large spectacles, but when he was DJ'ing he must have worn lenses. He was still around in 1978. GrinderBloke 12-08-2008, 16:48 Cookie was a real character, as you suggest PT, he sadly had Parkinsons. He really used to put the cat amongst the pigeons on Radio Sheffield, he would get a good debate going, often taking the opposite side of the argument, seemingly just to be devils advocate. Would you know roughly when he packed it in ? Plain Talker 12-08-2008, 17:06 Would you know roughly when he packed it in ? a couple of years before he died....? Treatment 12-08-2008, 17:09 a couple of years before he died....? Sorry, I didn't know he was dead. Plain Talker 12-08-2008, 17:09 he passed away about ten or fifteen years ago I think? CHAIRBOY 12-08-2008, 18:09 Yes, sadly Michael Cooke is no longer with us. I had the pleasure of playing alongside him in Radio Sheffield's annual football match against Radio Hallam. As said above, he presented the local region's soccer fates on Saturday's Look North. The 'abrupt' presentation came in a programme on Saturday morning. Michael didn't suffer fools and there were many occasions when callers went round in circles rather than making their point and giving others the chance to call. The association I always remember about Michael was his passion for the theatre and he did some excellent work for Rotherham Rep. Couldn't put a year on when he died but he had suffered Parkinsons for some time. http://www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/content/image_galleries/radio_sheffield_archive_photos_gallery.shtml?41 escort1 12-08-2008, 21:33 Not many people know he used to be a vicar before working on the radio. simonj 12-08-2008, 22:56 Michael Cooke moved into the house opposite mine back in the mid 70's (Stone Delf, Fulwood). Seemed strange at first seeing a TV regular so close on a daily basis, but what a nice guy  NETTIEJ 14-08-2008, 19:01 Yes, sadly Michael Cooke is no longer with us. The association I always remember about Michael was his passion for the theatre and he did some excellent work for Rotherham Rep. Couldn't put a year on when he died but he had suffered Parkinsons for some time. I was at Granville College during 1967/68 and I'm sure Michael was the drama teacher there. I remember us doing a performance at the Lyceum theatre about Hiroshima. I did hear about him suffering from Parkinsons, but I too had not heard that he had died. CHAIRBOY 14-08-2008, 19:43 BBC Radio Sheffield recently celebrated its 40th birthday. http://www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/content/articles/2007/10/09/radio_sheffield_40th_birthday_audio_feature.shtml If you click on 6 - Michael Cooke is interviewing a stubborn old man. Check out his dulcet tones! http://www2.tv-ark.org.uk/bbc_yorkshire/news.html A few pictures of Michael on the above link. http://www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/content/image_galleries/radio_sheffield_archive_photos_gallery.shtml?7 Andy the dj 16-08-2008, 23:33 Michael cook used to live on Gleadless common in the 70s i went to Ashleigh school with his daughter cant remember her name though. he was a dj on BBC radioSheffield from the late 60s and also got the job as news reader on Look north on bbc1 in the mid 70s,stayed at radio sheffield presenting the phone in with Dina Maiden and the teatime show walk right in with Winton Cooper.he also presented the sat morning pop show Down town saturday live from Norfolk street with the late dj Ray stewart.he was also a methodest minister. Also a mad sports fan. He also presented the lunchtime news prog on radio 4 in the 70s called The world at one.A realy nice chap. he sadly had parkinsons desiese and had to retire,he died a few years later. escort1 17-08-2008, 17:41 Used to go to down town saturday on norfolk st, all the stars that were on at the Fiesta at that time, maily stopping in the Grovesnor Hotel would come along for an on air interview. Remember seeing Jimmy Ruffin. xenia 18-08-2008, 12:38 On August 15th 1977 I was working behind the bar at the Mulberry tavern on Arundel gate when Michael came in with Roger Moffatt, Roger was an alchoholic who died very young but had the most beautiful speaking voice. Earlier he had been broadcating and the news had come thru about Elvis dying. Moffatt had said something insensitive and the Radio Sheffield office ,(I think on High St) was besiged by fans baying for blood. Michael was a friend of Mick Lee the landlord of the Mulberry and they hid him in the cellar whilst the fans, who had been told where he was, came looking for him. It was quite scary. Eventually Mick bundled Michael and Roger into a taxi and gort him away. Sorry tyhat Michael is dead, whatever hapened to Ro0ger Moffatt? *Wallace* 18-08-2008, 12:46 I remember Micheal DJ'ing at the Daisy too,Roger Moffat was the best thing radio Sheffield ever had, loved his show with Brenda Ellison think she moved to Australia. Roger Moffat was working for Radio Hallam at the time of elvis dying, and RM making the (allegedly) insensitive comments. (Personally I think what he said although somewhat inappropriate for broadcast/repeating was perfectly true) The Radio Hallam Offices were off Hartshead, behind High Street. Sheff2006 18-08-2008, 14:43 I can remember Michael Cook from Radio Sheffield. He also used to do the odd bit of presenting on Look North. I do remember one particular year (can't remember which year) when he did a sponsored bungee jump and as the event was broadcast live, just before he did the jump he looked as if he was absolutely crapping himself. Credit to the bloke though, he went through with it and managed to raise some money for the kids. |
