View Full Version : How to cope with Toothache?
Owwwww, I'm cutting a bottom wisdom tooth and it really really hurts. Its not like Jaw pain, which I would take strong painkillers for, its more the gum and my cheek (which I now keep biting by accident). I've put up with it for a week now but its stopping me sleeping. :help:
Has anyone got any tips? I've gone through a tube of bonjela (which can't be healthy). Going to the dentist is absolutely not an option (I'm absolutely phobic). I don't think there's anything actually wrong with it anyway, it shouldn't be impacting as I had 4 teeth out for orthodontic work many years ago.
Please help!
P.S. Anyone that DOES say go to a dentist will be severely beaten. Yes I know its the sensible option, but it isn't going to happen!
Yes they hurt and YES the dentist is the only way to go..
I couldn't wait on a list to have mine out I was in that much pain I sacrificed myself to the Students at Charles Clifford.. Never looked back.. (cos I daren't :hihi: )
If I hadn't had teeth out before I would assume that that would be the way to go and surrender to the pain. But refuse to believe that they could be impacted having already had the 4 removed. I can't have these out too, having that few teeth just wouldn't be natural!!
Clove oil is supposed to be good.. but I'm not sure you can get it anymore I seemed to remember it got banned???
cgksheff 27-04-2005, 19:15 Oil of Cloves is very good and is available.
There may be restrictions on selling it as a "medicine" but it is out there in health food shops and for cooking.
OK, you don't want to go to the dentist.
Go and pick a fight with a big bloke. With a bit of luck, he'll smack you with in the mouth, and the tooth will fall out.
Actually, most of your teeth will fall out.
He'll probably break your jaw as well, so you'll have to go to the hospital. But at least you shouldn't have to go to the dentists. And you'll have something else to take your mind of the pain.
Yes, this is a stupid answer.
But, by God, it was a stupid question.
Seriously though. At least see your Doctor before you do any damage to yourself.

Good Point  I nearly damaged my nerves which is why the pain was so bad.. Hence the sacrifice to Students at Charles Clifford :|
I havent yet cut any Wisdom teeth... I guess i'm just not wise enough! :hihi:

Its honestly not a medical/dental problem, if it was, despite the phobia I would go to the dentist. Its just normal teething irritation and I was wondering if anyone had any tricks to help. I've already found one which is to use bonjela with a cotton bud instead of my finger so it actually goes on my gum instead of just my finger, so I'm feeling a bit better now.
wisdon teeth rarely come in without the need of some help from the proffesionals so at least ring them or look on nhs webside for tips
Can you just confirm then:
1) Is the emerging wisdom tooth pushing another tooth out of the way?
2) Is the emerging wisdom tooth is coming up at an angle or veering to either side (ie, not straight up and vertical)?
If the answer to either is Yes, it may be best to see a dentist and arrange for them to be removed.
From personal experience:
(1) caused me a lot of pain when my two bottom wisdom teeth erupted within weeks of each other
(2) One of my top wisdom teeth had to be removed for this reason because it had nothing to bite on.
Still, 3 out of 4 wizzy teeth isn't bad :)
They are coming out all in a space of their own (not against any other teeth) and straight up. As I said earlier, they shouldn't impact as they do in most people as I have already had teeth out so there is plenty of room on all 4 corners.
(My teeth don't hurt, my jaw doesn't hurt, its purely gums and cheek)
Lucy_Smith 27-04-2005, 20:29 One of my wisdom teeth came through a few months and it hurt so bad. I just kept chewing on ice cubes!
I didn't go to a dentist though and the pain soon stopped. I didn't know wisdom teeth were such a big deal...I'm not even registered with a dentist!
OK then! That's good news!
I didn't want to frighten you by saying you'd have to go under general anaesthetic to have the wisdom teeth removed :)
Why not try Calgel (http://www.calpol.co.uk/en/article.asp?id=118) - from the makers of Calpol
It may ease the pain, and it if it's mild enough for little 'uns, it should be fine for you :)
A small box of it costs roughly £1.50 from your local pharmacy or supermarket - about half the price of bonjela, too
Bloomdido 27-04-2005, 20:48 try sleeping on a hot water bottle. Heat sometimes confuses the pain carrying nerves long enough to get to sleep.
Ask your GP for some DF118 pain killers. I had them after an operation. Wasn't in much pain but what a trip!
Once did go to dentist with emerging wisdom tooth pain. He injected something horrible and made it much worse. Took some Moroccan Black to take the pain away and get me to sleep that day.
Thanks for the tips, bloomdido.
Is morphine readily available anywhere (without having to have your leg sawn off first)?
As an ex dental nurse this is my advice: I agree with the other posts, oil of cloves is good (most dental products contain it), don't poke around with it.. you have a layer of gingiva (gum) which lies over your partially erupted tooth, mess with this and it could become inflamed meaning you need an operculumectomy (sic?), which will involve dentists and scaples!! Use a mouth rinse to keep the area clean (something like corsodyl, but always read labels and check for alergies etc).
I think wisdom teeth erupt anytime from 18 to 80, we once had a really old lady in with terrible wisdom tooth pain! The pain will probably go away but will come back, once it gets too bad you may have to go to the dentist, sorry to say it and you are free to beat me xx
Dab whisky on it too, if you drink alcohol.
Well thank you all very much for your advice!
I'm off to bed now and I'll give the hot water bottle a try. Don't think its quite time to resort to the DF118's yet I need to be lucid for work! Having managed to get some bonjela to stay on the gum for more than 2 seconds the pain was pretty much gone (albeit for all of about 5 minutes) so its obviously just the soft tissue and nothing more serious. I'll try the clove oil tomorrow and hopefully that'll last a bit longer!
And I promise if it does get worse I will go to the dentist.
:(
FairyNormal 27-04-2005, 21:43 I had a rotten time with my wisdom teeth and ended up with a 3 day stay in hospital having them all removed as even Charles Clifford Hosp refused to see to them!! They were impacted and one decided to start coming through right at the end of my gum, almost down my throat. It was a real mess. It wasn't pleasant having them done but the lack of pain since has more than made up for it!!
Anyway, I woudl recommend clove oil too. Also, my dentist reccommended (if you can stand the awfull taste!!) placing a disolvable asprin on the affected area and holding it there until it dissolves. Apparently, the gums can absorb the asprin far quicker than if you swalllow them. Tastes a bit nasty but worth a try.
cobaltblue 27-04-2005, 21:45 You can get Cuprofen over the counter - its just ibuprofen but is a good anti-imflammatory too. Apparently it's really good for toothache (my mate swears by it) and it won't make you drowsy :) I hope it clears up and your feeling better soon.
jgharston 28-04-2005, 07:06 Mine came through at exam time at University. I used teething gell and strong drink!
I wouldn't recommend asprin agaisnt your gum! I've seen many a patient arriving at hospital with an 'asprin burn' (common term for the damage caused to your gingiva), loads of people do this and end up in more pain!! sorry
now you know why babies cry all the time and dribble!!
I have all my wisdom teeth and wouldn't have them taken out (i am 33) for anything. I like having the extra bite!!
What I will say is the pain is recurrent because they tend to move about a bit - I have pain probably twice a year when I also get sinus pain from the top ones. take pain killers and ride it through. The pain will go away
It's sometimes just a piece of food which has become trapped between your original tooth and your wisdom tooth. That happened to me a few weeks back and was very painful. It didn't last much more than 48 hours though.
My sympathies are with you as I too suffered with my wisdom teeth for years ( I still have all intact ) It may be that you have an infection under the flap of skin and this can cause the pain as I can testify. Put your finger in the area where it hurts then smell at your finger - I know it's a disgusting suggestion but if it smells foul then it sounds like you have an infection. The dentist would prescribe antibiotics. I had a really bad bout once, so bad that I couldn't eat of open or close my mouth without severe pain. No amount of painkillers relieved this. It was in my face, ear and neck too.
I used to use a anticeptic mouth wash which had an anestetic in which was red in colour the name of which evades me. I'll write again and let you know if it comes back to me.
Another remedy is oil of cloves rubbed onto the area.
I was recommended salt water mouth washes after I had my wisdom teeth out (as well as taking some antibiotics). Was anyone else recommended this?
I know you haven't had yours out but I would have thought this would help. It tastes gross but I found it did help reduce the pain and swelling. Ermm, obviously spit, don't swallow afterwards. :)
1Man&hisBMW 03-05-2005, 18:54 Mine are hurting as we speak... they are buggers.
Well mine don't hurt at all now - got some Anbesol (lidocaine solution) which works a treat, as I only had time to go to Boots and they don't do clove oil. But its sorted itself out and now I just occasionally bite my cheek by accident because I'm not used to the tooth being there yet.
Now the problem is the awful hayfever that I woke up with this morning!

Yes - I was told to have use hot water though; as hot as I could take it!
Sheffette 03-05-2005, 22:01 Biccypegs! Remember them? They were cool and even came with a hole in the top you could lace a ribbon through to put round your neck - if you want to wear a medallion made of dribbly biccy that is.
But they are designed for teething - although perhaps not appropriate in this case (and come to think of it they did taste foul.)

LOL :D Omg I remember them!!! My wee baby bro always had one dangling round his neck when he was teething.
1. Make an appointment with the dentist
2. Get totally drunk on your appointment day
3. Have your friends bring you to the dentist
4. Don't think about it. Just do it!
:)
noseyrosie 04-05-2005, 12:34 In the mean time a good alternative to bonjela (i.e. this one actually works pretty well!) is Ambesol which you can get from behind the counter at chemists if you're over 18. It's made with cloves and is really numbing.
Anyone got an clues on what sort of age you get your wisdom teeth? I'm 18, will they be appearing soon?

If its anbesol you mean, thats what I bought, and its not made with cloves, but with Lidocaine which is even better!
I got my upper two wisdom teeth when I was around 17/18 but I'm now 23 and the other two are making an appearance. However they can actually emerge at any age after around 18 (my dad got one in his 40s), there's no set age, depending on how much room there is in your mouth etc. Some people's never actually come out.

Crikey, sounds like you'd forget about your toothache because you'd burnt your mouth instead! That sounds like even less fun than a salt water mouthwash with warm water which is what I was advised.

Hi I am in EXACTLY the same situation - I had 4 teeth out as a teeneger but my wisdom teeth make the flesh of my gums really hurt. It hurts for about a week at a time when there's a shift of the tooth then dies down for a bit. I went to the dentist twice and both times he sent me home saying that there was nothing wrong and I just had to put up with it hurting, so don't feel bad that you're too scared to go as they probably won't help you anyway!
vicelords 05-05-2005, 16:41 Best option i thought was use strong painkillers then get an hot water bottle for when you go to bed. I also went to the dentist and he said he couldn't do anything as it was just a wisdom tooth.
any tips on how to cope with the pain:( got to wait til monday to see a dentist so its pain killers but apparantly they say you cant take more than 8 a day , any advice to aid a poorly panda will be rewarded in heaven:)

littleboo 15-09-2005, 13:44 My husband had really bad toothache the other week he had to wait two weeks to see a dentist.
he used clove oil at first but found that it didn't take it away for long
he found that liquid ambersol worked better and longer. this was recommended by the pharmacist at boots

1. Go to Dentist.
2. If Dentist not available try oil of cloves on a piece of cotton wool , placed over the cavity.
3] Alternatively use Whisky [no, it doesn't matter if it is a malt or a blend for this purpose. Mind you, I wouldn't waste a good malt on a tooth].
4] Take strong painkillers which peferably contain codeine.
5] Fill a hotwater bottle with very warm, but not red hot, water. Apply to the side of the face the bad tooth is located. You may have neuralgia as well as toothache, and this treatment can really help to sooth the pain which may have spread to the whole of the side of your face.
6] Mental concentration on the pain can sometimes work, but I imagine not for everyone.
7] Try and sit somewhere quiet on your own, in peace. The pain can obviously make you feel ill-tempered. If the toothache is combined with neuralgia, you may feel murderous.
Good luck.
neeeeeeeeeek 15-09-2005, 14:19 Go to a different dentist is my advise. Go private if you have to. If it is an absys then they will not be able to remove it, they will give you antibiotics and book you in again a week or so later.
Zinger549 15-09-2005, 14:19 a nice bottel of wiskie should help ease the pain and get you drunk at the same time :hihi:

bertie749 15-09-2005, 14:38 Panda79 buy some ''Tiger Balm'' from the chemist.... and run it on your cheek ... it will burn a little as its a little like Raljex (?spelling, help) and smells a little but it does the trick.

ive managed to find one after going through the yellow pages just got to wait til monday now
Have you thought about going to Charles Clifford tmrw?
You get it seen to there and then if you are early enough.. you might have to tell a white lie though and tell them you dont have a dentist at present- that will get you seen to straight away in my experience.
Either that or salt water, my nan used to rub vodka on her gums as well if she had toothache- might be worth a shot.

i was at charles clifford this morning i was told i would be examined to see if i needed urgent treatment this examination consisted of looking at my face to see if it was swolen enough
potty:(
littleboo 15-09-2005, 14:57 yeah he just turned up...mums advice, and they said he would have to wait a week!!
In the end he went to the Dr's and they gave him some antibiotics as the pain was so bad! this got rid of the infection.
Pseudonym 15-09-2005, 16:27 Stop-Gap Measures To Cope With Tooth-Ache...
SIP a very small amount of whiskey, allow it to warm up in your mouth, then swill it around the tooth/abcess, or hold it over it with your tongue as long as possible, then spit it out. This will both sterilise and anaesthetise and by spitting it out, you'll be able to also take any painkillers safely. Repeat several times an hour until the pain subsides.
Wrap a thick woolen scarf or similar around your face, covering jaw, mouth and nose (not TOO tightly!;))... Also be sure to cover your ears (this is very important!). Avoid any sudden changes in temperature, e.g. going from a hot to a cold room & vice-versa.
This method works not only with toothache and abcesses but also helps greatly with neuralgia... compared to which, toothache is a mere inconvenience!

im going to try that one later
cheers:thumbsup:
400mg Ibuprofen is great, until the effect wears off a few hours later!
LellyBee 15-09-2005, 17:28 I was in a similar situation with an awful toothache and I called into Boots and a very nice gentlemen there advised me to take their own brand Dental Pain Relief tablets, he assured me they were the strongest over the counter pain relief he could give me and they were. The tabs worked a treat on me, numbed the pain to a manageable level until I could get to the dentist
Part of my tooth broke off a while ago, anyhow i bit into something tonight and it sent imense pain to my gum - the pain is overwhelming - experienced nothing like this before i've taken sdome ibrufen but that won't be enough
it's sunday night - what can i do - the pain is unbareable
Get yourself to the pharmacy on the wicker or any other late night pharmacy and get some clove oil it numbs the gum, I once had a imploded molar according to the dentist its one of the most extreme's pain you can have and clove oil numbed it until I got to the dentists.
It tastes vile but it does the trick.
good luck

Internetowl 25-09-2005, 19:40 you always seem to get the taste of cloves when you're at the dentist .....
might have to get some clove oil as its pretty cheap..
thank you thank you - i will do that now
ibroprofen every 2 hrs and paracetamol every 2 hours, worked a bit 4 my gum infection
Zinger549 25-09-2005, 20:39 I siad it before and i'll say it again Whisky. I herd it does the job
Can I just caution all users of ibuprofen (which should work in this setting- up to 1800mg daily, split in 4 doses) or other NSAIDs that protecting your stomach by eating before you take a dose, and ideally taking Zantac or similar, is vitally important as this is an instance where you may be taking the drugs for a couple of weeks or more if you have trouble getting to the dentist. The last thing you need is a stomach ulcer too.
Oh and BTW, if you're asthmatic, approach aspirin and ibuprofen with extreme caution unless you know that you aren't in the small group for whom they cause asthma attacks.
Good luck on getting the pain under control- a couple of days waiting to see the dentist can be horrid otherwise.
Could be worth checking with Charles Clifford Hospital. Don't they have an emergency service?
jester6881 03-01-2006, 20:03 Anybody got any advice or remedies to help ease tooth ache? Not meaning to sound like a big girl but its a pain i dont want and cant get into my dentists until next week

Can't they see you any sooner as an emergency?
My dentist is fantastic, if I ever have any pain they get me in the same day to see him.
jester6881 03-01-2006, 20:11 Thanks for the tips....no i cant get in sooner....you've been a great help....its a pain which seems to affect everything, but from the advise given, you all know what i mean!
Trust me I really know how you feel, in the past 3 years I have been at the dentist every other month(not an exageration).
I have had to have 11 root treatments, 3 pulled out as the root treatments didn't work and a bridge put in.
.....and yes I do brush my teeeth regularly. My dentist says that I am just one of the unlucky ones who's nerves inflame easily then have to been taken out. This only applies to all my molars though and 2 of my wisdom teeth.
I thoroughly sympathise with you.
Zinger549 03-01-2006, 20:18 A drop of wiskie has been know to do the trick
hockeybear 03-01-2006, 20:28 I really feel for you. All I can suggest is biting a paracetamol and putting the bits on the aching tooth. I have been told that cigarette smoke eases it but I cannot really recommend that can I?
