View Full Version : Hospital Waiting Lists?

Whats the longest you've waited for a minor examination (not operations or anything)?

I was put on the podiatry waiting list last september and my appointment is this October - 13 months wait - and I'll have gone to university by that time. My feet are really starting to hurt and i wonder if my posture might be permanently damaged seeing as I'm probably still growing?

I think this wait is ridiculous - I know why as well, becuase the podiatry clinic is only open one or two days a week.

I bet I have the record for the shortest wait, 1 day for a suspect looking mole on my leg.

I went to the doctors on Monday and was under the knife on Tuesday.

It was nothing bad.

Wow that was quick Nick, was it done at a hospital or at yr gp's?

I had a mole removed but had to wait 8 months to have it removed at hospital.

Noseyrosie, just a thought, have you asked if the clinic will contact you if they have a cancellation? May get you in quicker.

Well every time I've tried phoning them it's been answerphone territory and I've not had a reply. As I said, they're rarely open so I can't catch the reception when it is. I also think it's one of the crazy Netheredge or Infirmary Road outposts so I can't just go there in person because I don't know where it is.

It was at the Northern General, I just turned up, waited about 10 minutes, 5 students had a guess at what it might be (some of the guesses were quite scarey, and thankfully wrong) then they injected me with painkiller and cut it out, I didn't feel a thing, then they cauterised the hole with (what looked like) a soldering iron. The whole thing took less than half an hour.

Well I'd try going back to your GP, if he referred you in the first place and asking him to give you the name of the specialist and the clinic number, it may vary from the public number.
If you're still in pain it could be worth asking your GP for help again.
Maybe worth your while checking out the NHS site to see if contact can be made via the website?

I've been waiting for a cartlidge operation since 1983! I went to the Hallamshire, and they said I could go on a waiting list, but what they suggested was to go and do as much sport as I wanted and eventually it would lock and then have to be done as an emergency.

It finally locked in October 1996, and I was taken to the Northern General where they put the biggest bandage in the world on and told me to come back next week, which I did. They changed the bandage and again said come back next week. This went on for about 6 weeks by which time the swelling had gone down and it had "clicked" back into place, so I stopped going.

Still waiting!

(by the way NGH.....still got your crutches!)

I've had an 8 week wait to see a consultant at the Hallamshire which I thought was pretty quick. I had an MRI down in Oxford last year which was also an 8 week wait. I am yet to become afflicted with something which involves going on a waiting list I think!

i think the waiting lists are a shambles at the moment, a girl i worked with lost 5 stone and had loose skin around her belly which was not nice to see but was not an illness or anything, her gp agreed that she could have a tummy tuck, she went on the waiting list and within 6 months had her operation booked in a private hospital paid for by the NHS!

one of the other girls had a very painful condition to do with her ovaries which required an operation and she was on the waiting list 6 months before the tummy tuck girl and is still waiting!!!

i know that the people with cosmetic reason are distressed by thier appearence but i think people who are in actual pain should be seen much quicker.

Why aren't you going to the podiatry clinic in the city centre? I only waited a couple of months for my appointment there.

Waiting lists are about waiting for a service that is in short supply, if there are only 2 brain surgeons but 20 plastic surgeons then obviously people wanting a nose job will wait less time than someone wanting a brain tumour removing, the plasic surgeon can't suddenly decide he's going to go brain surgery to get the list down.

In your example the tummy tuck could probably be done by several surgeons so it got done quickly but the ovary operation probably required a surgeon with a certain set of skills and he/she was fully booked-up.

I didn't know there were different ones? All I know is that I've got to wait a long time, and my docs are being a bit blase about the whole thing. I might go in with a walking stick to make them feel bad.

When I lived "down south" I think I managed the all time record for the shortest wait for an operation. My GP booked me in at the hospital for an examination and the Dr at the hospital said "we'll sort that out for you quickly, follow the nurse through that door". 10 minutes later, I had a local anaesthetic, another 30 minutes later I was standing in the hospital car park wondering how I was going to drive my car legally with one eye all bandaged up! Obviously, it was only a minor operation though.

im sorry you have had to wait so long but i cant help getting a wee bit annoyed when people moan about waiting lists.Every persons problems are always worse than everyone elses, the clinic is probably only open fpr 2 days due to cut backs and possibly even redundencies. The NHS simply cannot cope with the rising population, coupled with reduced funding. Maybe we should all just be grateful that we have free health care, even if we do have to wait for it...
