yes im sure there will be a load of funny answers like `an elephant' etc. haha ;)

but im more interested in food and electronics.

i have a gameboy advanced...will i be allowed to use that during flights? coz i think i heard you cant have mobile phones on board... i know this is prob down to the radio frequences or something. but a gameboy advanced does has the option of listening to radio so im just wondering if anyone knows.

oh and they serve crisps and drinks etc on board im sure, but im picky so are you allowed to take on a bottle of juice and crisps/chocolate?

ive never flown....can you tell?

Gameboys are fine so are crisps and drinks. Depending on the airline and duration of flight you do get a couple of complimentary drinks before you have start paying for them.

Tea and Coffee are free at set times.

The first thing I would be asking the airline company is can I take my own parachute.
I read a report on RF interference that suggests its a load of rubbish. In fact I read in a newspaper they may start allowing mobile phone use on domestic flights.

you can have a phone (but it has to be off or switched to flight mode if available), you can use a gameboy or most other electronics except during takeoff and landing.
You can take whatever food you like, but you may not be able to take it through customs at your destination. Just make sure you eat it and everyones happy.

You can now at the airlines discretion once again have nail files and scissors and metal cutlery. But for the moment it's probably easier to make sure that anything pointed or with an edge is in your hold luggage.

There is a list of things which can't be taken onboard as handluggage, these include things such as gas cylinders (as used in some hair straighteners I believe), cigarette lighters (i think), guns, bullets, explosives, weapons, pets... Check out the ba website, i'm sure you can find the full list.

Who are you flying with, what you get in terms of food onboard will depend on that (ie easyJet, £1 for some crisps, nothing free), BA food and drink complimentary includes a meal for most flights.

Have you got your "certificate of air-worthiness"?
Apparently it's essential for people that haven't flown before. Ask your travel agent about it.....

Make sure you don't pack scissors or tweezers in your hand luggage and don't forget to wave out of the window!!

that's actually slightly out of date. The EU regulation which added tweezers, scissors and the like after 9/11 has now been repealed. Airlines can now allow those items onboard at their discretion.

Take it up with Manchester airport, it was as I said taken from their web site, and they tend to handle more air traffic than you and I Cyclone.
Just as a matter of interest when was the regulation repealed ?

found it. in the NZ Herald!!!

LONDON - Passengers on flights from Britain will be able to dine with metal cutlery again from Monday as anti-terrorism laws are relaxed.

The government banned sharp metal objects on board after Islamic radicals used box-cutters to hijack planes in the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

That meant plastic knives and forks for all inflight meals.

Now, passengers flying from British airports will be able to carry on board knitting needles and scissors, with blades shorter than 3 cm, while airlines will be able to provide metal cutlery.

Other items like penknives remain banned.

can't find it in the telegraph, but i'm pretty sure that's where I read it.

Department for Transport prohibited list is here (http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_transsec/documents/page/dft_transsec_031123-02.hcsp) .

But don't forget that airlines are allowed their own discretion to ban items in addition to these if they wish.

Having recently travelled on easyjet I can confirm that you can have a walkman or gameboy, but you have to have it switched off during takeoff and landing. As for extra food and drink. We always take a little food and stuff which might have been bought in the airport in plastic bags, and they never say anything, because people with special diets would not trust them to serve appropriate foods on an aircraft(not that we have special diet or anything). They scan it all with the xray machine and off you go on board. Always take some mint imperials in your hand luggage (the hard ones) if you get painful ears sucking one on takeoff and landing helps.

You can take your Mobile phone on board but you have to switch it off when you go near the aircraft. So if you keep a reminder for your credit card pin in the memory you can't get to it in the air, if you decide to buy a jar of J-lo perfume, binoculars or box of fags from the in flight brochure.

This apparently applies to British airlines flying out of British airports. US regulations haven't been relaxed. There is now the potential for items that are acceptable on the way out being confiscated by the US authorities before you come back.

Yeah the back seat rules. It's fab when you are ascending, because you can see the front jacked up really high, and it gives you a great view of all of the cabin.

MTheo, hope you got your question answered. A few additional hints you may find useful (not sure of your destination).

Whatever the legislation in the UK, you may find it differs at your destination, try to check with your destination country on-line.

Lighters - not allowed in packed luggage (UK) and not allowed in hand luggage (USA). Any sharp or sharp metal implemented still not permitted in many countries and if it is airlines discretion probably just as well to avoid at the moment.

Food - take whatever you need to eat/drink during the flight, be aware that some countries do not permit any food stuffs to be brought into their country.

Clothing - travel as lightly as possible, you may have to remove coats etc for security checks. Shoes: any boots, thick or deep heels will have to be removed for security checks.

Camera film - take in hand luggage to avoid potential strong x-ray. You can request it be hand checked rather than going through x-ray which could damage the film.

Avoid drinking alchohol, the altitude accelerates the effects of alchohol and increases de-hydration.

And - walk about if you can, stretch and avoid sitting cross-legged as all can increase risk of DVT.

Lastly - enjoy and have fun!

I was not allowed to use my CD player on a flight a couple of years ago.

Coupled with the broken overhead light (so couldn't read cos it was a night flight) and the headphone socket that didn't work (so couldn't watch TV) and the typically crap leg room (so couldn't get comfortable/sleep) it was a long 10hrs!

I e-mail the airline now and ask them about what electronics I can use onboard.

Sounds like an uncomfortable 10 hr flight!

On the plane recently we were told we could use our mobile phones until the plane doors were closed. Then when we landed at Heathrow, once the doors were open we were told we could use our phones again.

Overheard one of the cabin crew talking to someone else and she admitted that sometimes she had forgotten to turn her mobile off!

They usually tell you what sort of equipment you can use, we could use our video camera on board. I really wish they'd make more room in cattle class though, not enough room to move at all!

I've never heard or seen that before.
Afterall most business flights have people using laptops on them. A lot of people take some form of personal stereo, some people have pda's and gameboys (other brands exist).
The only time i've ever been asked to turn things off are for takeoff and landing. And to be honest there is no evidence that even mobile phones can have any interfering effect.

I've heard it suggested that it's actually mobile phone companies that got that ban created (it didn't exist for quite a few years when people had mobiles). The reason being that travelling at 400mph you move rapidly from cell to cell, and being up in the air have a good signal to multiple transmitters. This puts a large work load on the transmission systems keeping track of your phone and which node it's connected too. Multiply that by dozens of 747 flying around London and you probably have the phone network crashing.

By the way, the back is not best, never turn right when getting onto a plane. (Unfortunately I only fly business class with work, so i have to fly economy if i'm paying).

You ever flown MyTravel?!? Jeez. Never again.

It was about 12 months after 9/11 so I wasn't gonna argue the point. Maybe just over cautious cabin staff on that flight, but it wasn't a good start to the holiday.
