View Full Version : Looking for a decent gym or evening classes in s6/s10
Black Widow 10-08-2008, 10:18 My friend and I are looking for some kind of class that starts about 6.30pm on a Momday or Tuesday that is fun, not to crowded and with the aim of losing some weight!
We've tried yoga at Upperthorpe Healthy living centre but the class was too busy. We also tried belly dancing there and it was possibly the wierdest class we've ever been to with 1 rather strange teacher and only 2 people in the class plus us!
We'd like to maybe try Salsa in an evening (beginners), or we'd maybe try a martial art where there's not too many men making up the class and where it's suitable for beginners.
It's either this or we'd be looking to join a local gym on Peak membership that wasn't too pricey and i've heard about the new Gym Plus on crookes but i'm told it's a bit small and there's no pool which if I joined a gym i'd like to have access to.
Any recomendation on anything for us in Upperthorpe, Walkley, Crookes or at a push Ecclesall or Hillsborough?
Hi there - I have only just seen your post because I am new to the Forum. I have just found out about Salsa classes at Walkley Community Centre, Fir Street. Beginners classes are going to be on Thursdays 8-9 p.m. starting on 16th April. £40 for 10 classes. I saw the ad in the Sheffield Telegraph and then e-mailed: salsacubanasheffield@yahoo.co.uk.

Last year I rang City Limits about classes and was told classes start at certain times of the year and to register on their website to get information, which I did. The website says it will inform you when new classes will start. I never got any e-mails. Had looked yesterday again on the website for Salsa classes for beginners and saw new classes had started in February. They do have Drop-In classes for Improvers but not beginners. Have also heard good things about the Centre but not impressed by their internet communication.

You could try the burlesque classes in hillsborough. if you go google velvet burlesque all the details of the classes are on there. It's very good fun and very good exercise. you meet lots of different women and it improves your confidence, balance and coordination too! lara who runs the classes is inspirational.

Truffles 14-04-2009, 18:04 They do belly dancing classes at wisewood sports college and they do gym sessions as well they and you can also pay £4 per session or monthly but i'm not quite sure how much that is.
Lincoln Hawk 15-04-2009, 10:49 I've been through the process of looking for gyms, etc around Crookes as well and can make a few suggestions based on what I ended up doing, though clearly there are some other really good ideas here which may be more what you're after.
Gym Plus is a nice friendly gym and a good price, but it is small and if a pool's important it won't be what you want. S10 Health is okay, but if you hit it at peak times (ie Hollyoaks) it can be hard to get on the equipment you want. They do a lot of classes there as well, so may be worth checking out the U-Sport website. Membership's pretty expensive if you aren't a student or post-grad though, but they do have offers on sometimes.
After not finding what I was after nearby, I started going running as there are nice places round that way and a lot of other runners, and climbing at The Matrix (they do lessons there intermittently which is how I started, usually at about 6pm). I also go to a karate class near Corporation street which has a good mix of age and gender and a lot of members from Crookes/Walkley so if you tried them and liked them you could probably find yourself a lift down! (google Hallam Dojo if it's not too far away to be of interest - though clearly there are lots of other good martial arts classes in town). Not intended as criticisms or endorsements of anywhere per se, but hopefully a couple more ideas.
Hi
My name is Simon Green. I teach Taekwondo at the Sheffield Mudo Academy. It is close to the Healthy Living Centre. I have been training for over twenty years and also qualified fitness instructor.
Martial art for many people is a frightening thought but we at the academy view it in a different light. You don’t have to spar (Fight). You will learn self defence, and burn of some of those calories.
We run a class on a Monday night starting at 7.00pm. You would be more than welcome to come down. We are not that busy, plus we have more than one instructor on hand.
You can watch or take part, first lesson is free.
Give us a go, you are the kind of person we need.
