There's an old thread about Violet May here: http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4948 Violet was a real character whom anyone would warm to; she often seemed far more interested in the records than in making a profit. Violet May Barkworth died in August 1995, aged 85.

I used to go to her shop on City Road near Bernard Street with a pal called Ernest Allen.

We were both mad keen Jazz fans at the time.

I often wonder whatever became of Ernest, I know he was a decent Drummer.

He did work as a Fitter at the Grimesthorpe Steel Works and lodged at the back of the Midland station with his in laws with his young wife and baby.

He was married at a very early age and I wondered if anyone else on here knew him?

I was married to Violet May's grandson. She was a formidable lady.

Violet May's this brought back memories, in the long lost days as my daughter says of cave living and did we have televisions, I used to visit her shop for all my 'Motown' - You could guarentee she had it in stock- Never had any money, always came out with more than I had gone in for.

Happy Days

Wasn't Violet May's at the bottom of Duke St in the early 60s, I remember going there a few times?
