View Full Version : Guilty Pleasures
Fivetide 10-08-2008, 01:10 AM Ok, the title says it all. I'm watching Save the Last Dance at the moment, which I really like. Elsewhere I have admitted that Bring It On is another film I like, for genuine non-perv reasons. And in a (probably futile) attempt to restore some manliness I have to say that I think The Fast and the Furious is an absolute gem.
Tell me I'm not the only person who has a shameful taste in these sort of films?
Edit - and The Little Mermaid (although I hate The Lion King.. honest!).
Beakerzoid 10-08-2008, 08:30 AM Oh I have a few guilty pleasures which I know I really shouldn't like.
One is Wild Wild West - I just kinda enjoyed it when it came out, and still enjoy watching it now. I think it is the steampunk western theme to it all (a sub genre that has a certain draw for me).
EdnaKrabappe 10-08-2008, 10:23 AM It's different for girls, you are expected to enjoy these sorts of films.
I admit to having a guilty pleasure for 80s films. - Breakfast club, stand by me, lost boys, ferris bueller.
The films i've probably watched the most? When Harry met Sally and Pretty Woman both of which i can quote large sections of. It really is that sad.
Grease and Footloose also featured heavily in my watching when i was younger.

I'm expecting you to arrange the next forum film meet to see Make it Happen! :hihi:
Grim Reaper 10-08-2008, 10:25 AM For me it would be:-
Zoolander ;)
discodown 10-08-2008, 10:59 AM Calamity Jane
7 Brides for 7 Brothers
Dirty Dancing
and loads of others
Hecate 10-08-2008, 11:19 AM I love all sorts of films that some are sniffy about: Michael Bay/Simpson/Bruckheimer nonsense like Bad Boys II (though Transformers is a bit duff and Bruckheimer should be shot for his involvement with the Pirates trilogy), Urban Legend, I Know What You Did Last Summer and other scrungily amusing horror (though not the excessively gory stuff like the Saw franchise) and then just silly 80s/90s films like Pretty Woman, Flatliners, While You Were Sleeping etc.
It's all good, comforting nonsense, particularly as I don't tend to be a fan of films that put me through the emotional wringer; the cinema's about entertaining escapism for me.
I draw the line at the truly excrementally awful stuff like Little Man, Norbit, the Pirates films etc. I do have the requirement that a film must at least have some wit, and show some evidence of a completed script beyond the high concept of Eddie Murphey in a fat suit or Johnny Depp doing a Richards/Bowie impression for several interminable hours.
SarahD 10-08-2008, 12:00 PM Mean Girls, I love it.

Can we? CAN WE??!! To be fair I don't think When Harry Met Sally counts as a guilty pleasure for either gender (Pretty Woman might do for blokes though :hihi:)... Or Grease... what's wrong with Grease?! And the Breakfast Club? Another classic, surely??
Wild Wild West - Definitely GUILTY.
Calamity Jane
7 Brides for 7 Brothers
Dirty Dancing - Aaaaall GUILTY.
Zoolander - Guilty? Really? Man, I'm in trouble.
Bad Boys II - GUILTY (It's the II that puts it in this category... for me at least..).
Flatliners - Come on! It's ACE. The other dodgy horrors - GUILTY!
Mean Girls - GUILTY (and ace...)
I hereby sentence the accused to an evening with the Tom Hanks romcom collection! (Come on people... Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail... pure class.)

Ha ha! I think it would be a very, VERY select group of people but go ahead - I'll come - I've seen everything else practically. I dare you! (Make it for Wed or Thurs :hihi: - I'm busy mon/tues. )
And I love Tom Hanks films - I'd love to go on the Big keyboard!
I love all the films from the late 80s/early 90s where the plot centres around a little baby, so stuff like Three Men and a Baby, and the first 2 Look Who's Talking movies (the third one with the dogs was crap IMO), them babbies are SO gorgeous!
PinkJo 11-08-2008, 10:30 PM Mine is Starship Troopers.
panda79 12-08-2008, 07:19 AM Mean Girls, I love it.

Stainboy 10-09-2008, 02:21 PM Hmm, well I didn't object too much to watching Bridget Jones with my housemate's sister once and then even watched the sequel on my own (from housemates collection).
You guys are being too hard on yourself, a lot of the stuff mentioned here I'd proudly stand up and claim to watch over any "more aceptable" modern blockbuster.
Yog Sothoth 16-09-2008, 03:32 PM Mine is Starship Troopers.
Why be guilty about that? It's a subtle satire of american military and foreign policy. It's just that it's not obvious in the film, and most folks just took it at face value. Read the book though and it's a BIG critique of Amerika!
My guilty pleasures?
Legend has to be one of 'em. Tim Curry's Darkness is awesome.
Also Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Conan the Barbarian too.
There's more though...

Never understood that, I found it completely obvious. How could you take it at face value? What's wrong with people? :loopy:
spottie2101 16-09-2008, 09:54 PM So many but i guess my top ones are:
Dirty Dancing
Step Up
Save The Last Dance
The Fast and The Furious
And the Disney Film Beauty and The Beast :hihi:
NEKRO138 22-09-2008, 05:43 PM Perfect Storm. I know it's dross! But I like the look of the sea in it. I've always been drawn to films with epic seascapes in.
donuticus 16-11-2008, 04:12 PM My guilty pleasures at the moment are Tremors and Ten Things I Hate About You.
Beakerzoid 16-11-2008, 04:15 PM My guilty pleasures at the moment are Tremors and Ten Things I Hate About You.
There's nothing to feel guilty about with either of them :)
With regards to Tremors, have you seen the rest of the Tremors films and the short-lived TV series? Tremors 2 is well worth catching, as is 4 (which is set 100 years before the first film). 3 is a bit poor, but paves the way for the events of the TV series which was actually quite decent.
Jabberwocky 16-11-2008, 04:18 PM The Pirates of Penzance with Linda Ronstadt and Kevin Kline. Im after it on DVD for Christmas and its a film I love to bits and never get tired of watching.
I get called names that vary from Raving nancy to stuck up git because of my love for the film but I dont care!
