When my ma-in-law first came to live with us, they put in an extra step in the garden, hand rails, etc, to make it safer and it didn't cost anything. I needed an extra handrail put in a couple of years ago and had to pay half the cost, because they no longer had the money to pay for it all! But it was well worth it - good job and much cheaper than if I'd have found somebody myself. WallBuilder 10-08-2008, 00:41 Has he been discharged from the hospital yet? I thought some-one couldn't be discharged until their house was adapted for their needs, which basically means access into the house, a bed at the right height so he can transfer from a wheelchair on to the bed and adequate toilet facilities which unfortunately can be as basic as a porta-loo. Social services used to deal with all the bits that need doing but as one of my friends discovered who used to live at Killamarsh they don't exactly hurry things along. mackenzie 12-08-2008, 11:22 no my grandad is still in hospital he lives in a bungalow all he really needs is a ramp hes got a commode for loo but needs handrail on side as someone has to help him in loo everything else seems fine they got meeting with social services today as 2 of my uncles wants him in a nursing home and other 8 kids say no but if social worker thinks he cant come home then everything we do is pointless WallBuilder 12-08-2008, 21:26 Social services can be very good but if the house needs certain adaptations then getting the work done can take a long long time if the SS are organising things. I've just remembered another possible problem could be the width of the doorways as if he's wheelchair bound he's got to be able to move around the house. Unless things have changed SS wont allow him to be discharged without adequate adaptations in place although they can't actually stop him if he discharges himself. |
