I voted other too, for Bubblegum and Jigsaw which both used to be at Republic back when it was still called that! (before it became GC1!!) My other choice would've been Bed. I've never heard of lots of the ones on your list...

I remember a tiny little club in the early 80s... it could only hold about 50 people and they were selective about who they let in and the dance floor was tiny and chrome and like a flower with petals... I cant even remember where it was now... the doorman was huge and had gold teeth... anyone remember the place?

Probably The Roxy, where Carling Academy is now.

I have never, and probably never will, set foot in a Nightclub, they're noisy, full of c words, and rip you off on the price of drinks (a bit like most of the Pubs in Town)

If you've never been in a nightclub because they're too noisy, how come you're voting for the Roxy, which was three floors of noise and c words?

Anyone remember Beluga I think it was called on Carver St. ?Only went once and didn't rate it.

It was called Sinatras in the 80s, me and my mate used to finish work at 12 o,clock and go straight in there. Sometimes we'd have a change and go to The Limit (yuk), Issabellas,Josephines or if we were hungry we'd go to The China Garden until the time i got food poisoning and i'd got a French exam the next day. Yep, i was only 15, it actually amazed me how i got in those places

Roxy's was Ok. What was wrong with it?

The music was rubbish, the bouncers were too heavy handed, the bar service was too slow, and it was too big to find your mates again once you'd spent 45 minutes trying to get served.

Apart from that I quite liked it :)

I dunno - I was a 19 year-old living in a 700 student hall of residence when I was going there - it was just like where I lived but with terrible music really.

It seemed that most Tuesdays in first year all of Ranmoor House went to the Roxy.

It could be that... As I say, I was always hideously drunk, but the dance floor was tiny, youd be lucky to get three people onto it.

When I used to go it was all new romantic and we used to pose like grotesque shop window dummies.

I was always the odd one out though because I was a Numan fan and usually wore a black suit, black shirt, red tie and belt.

And VERY pointy shoes!

I remember going in there one night and the doorman asked me if I had a young lady with me tonight... I said no and he said "Well shall I get you one?"

I said "NO!" and he said "Well, what about a nice young man then? I can get you one of those if thats your pleasure tonight....?"

I dont think I went back after that...

The Salutation, later known as Lydias at Attercliffe.

It was a gay club and my mate was gay and we used to go there in the early 80s, he used to bugger off with some bloke he`d pulled and leave me to get legless on my tod so eventually I started taking girlfriends there with me.

Which of course led to the rumour that I was bi sexual...

I didnt care though, the booze was cheap, the company was great and the music was brilliant.

My suggestion would be the Kay Gee bee for some personal reasons. I met some people there who to this day are still friends, I knew by sight probably 80% of the customers, I met two of my g/f's there and I was introduced to Northern Soul music there which broadened my musical tastes.
Plus it's about the only place in which I've been seen to waltz, though thinking about it that's nothing to boast about.

How can you include half of those options and miss off Republic (Gatecrasher1)?
I personally didn't like the Gatecrasher night but it made the club one of most important in the entire country. People nationwide mourned its burning!
Not me personally but I have to respect its significance.

I would have chosen Bed but that's not on there either.

13-08-2008, 03:58 PM
I've lived in Sheffield since 86 so have been to quite a few on the list.

I remember:-

Roxys - townys, fights in queue, great Pjama Jump night, paid bouncer £5 to sneak i fire exit, cheap Wed student night, snogging older MILF on dfance floor!

Cairos - wed night student night, 2 rooms, great music, always very drunk

Issys - Tues student night, huge queues, £1.50 to get in and 10p (!) a pint, even snakebites, bouncy dancefloor, quite small

Josephines - rarely went in, too many old orange people, expensive and very naff

Leadmill - superb any night especially Thursday, great music, good bar and small bar to chill out + great band venue

Limit - dark, dangerous, addictive, fights, drugs, crazy, always wear black!

Kingdom - went once never returned

Corporation - only went a few times, getting on a bit when it opened but all mid week and had a great time. Superb atmosphere, music and drink promotopns, very drunk!

I will ad a few as well - Sheff 1 at Sheff Poly - THE best saturday night when at poly. Fight for tickets, 1000 very drunk students, great music, huge dancefloor, very wet & slippery dancefloor, 'kopped off' with my future wife there in 1991!

Fri night at Octagon Sheff Uni - poly students going into enemy territory! Very good night, big venue and oppurtunity to take micky out of posh uni students!

My favourite was Sheff 1 when I was a student and Leadmill post grad.

Best mainstream club has to be Cairo Jax
Best underground club definately the Palais / Music Factory. (Musically Sheffields best clubbing periods ever...............)

All the people voting Roxy's need to be ashamed of there selves. Fair enough it served a purpose but it was not the place you take your girlfriend out on a date.

The Arches (aka SADMAC, Subway, Underground, 9-11 (yes seriously - it was tastefully called that for a bit) - on the right night - one of best venues for a party I've ever been to & lost count of the people I first met in the corridor at the Arches. And despite its location and often lack of security (esp in later days) - always had a nice friendly crowd in with no idiots.

Maybe not world reknowned but the Kay Gee Bee when it held it's all nighters for Northern Soul had people coming from all over the country and one of the DJ's Nev Wherry was a regular, most northern soul fans will recognise his name.. The rock bights grought people up from Nottingham and Barnsley was fairly well represented. The mod nights certainly brought some strangers to the city if the accents were anything to go by and to this day I don't know where on earth all the people came from who frequented the reggae nights.
Oh and in the ballroom dancing competitions we had judges who were exttreemely well known and I'm sure I met a reigning champion couple in Tago who came to give a demonstration, amongst others.

What the "superclubs" had, that the orginal rave clubs didnt, was marketing and "branding" - and there's no denying Gatecrahser had plenty of that!

Though... Interestingly Gatecrasher was never the most popular weekly trance night in the UK - Escape from Samsara in Brixton was doing 1500-2000 people every Friday for 7 years and arguably was the first big club to regularly play trance (when GC was still playing house) - but because it was run by bunch of hippies & ran by word of mouth - you rarely read about it...

True, and thats to the credit of clubs like GC, cream and the ministry- they saw a gap in the market for global clubbing brands and took it with both hands.

I would never say that GC was the most trance night in the UK but i would say that it drew people to it from most of the UK.

These clubs paved the way for the likes of Gatecrasher and set the standards. Love2be was attracting celebrities week in week out and put Sheffield on the map way before Gatecrasher.
Jive Turkey was getting people from all over the country back in 88 - 90. It was Sheffields first true super club so it deserves its recognition.
The Palais and Music Factory continued where Jive Turkey left off and took it to the next level. One thing was for certain and I am sure most of the people will agree for nostalgia J.T, Palais and Music Factory (Love2be) were musically Sheffields best credible nights without doubt.

Rise and Trash were cool clubs in there own right but they were not superclubs. Love2be were having a list celebrities in there regularly as if it was on the westend of London.
Also the numbers were no where near Love2be or the Palais (Jam Factory or Compulsions) due to them having a smaller capacity. I remember Todd Terry New Years Eve. There was a queue literally at 7.30pm

Love2be was attracting celebrities week in week out

How come you regular use this as a measure of how good a club night is? I've seen you refer to this time and time again on here. I would personally avoid any club that regularly attracted "celebrities" like the plague. (Although I do agree with some of your other points).

Jive Turkey never attracted many celebs and that was my main choices also the Palais back in the day.
A super club should attract celebs to be fair, never did Studio 54 or Ministry any harm.

All this reminiscing about the old days is great. Sheffield has had such a sound clubbing past. Its heritage and tradition runs deep. Its such a pity that right now theres very very little. Sure Plug is fighting the good fight and Nylon/Redroom and to a lesser extent DQ but realistically there are very few really good nights or venues

Even Cairo Jax, a commercial club had some kind of flavor due to the soul room. Its ironic that just about 85% of the old school played today by Sheffield djs on West St is incidental and replicates the Jax room back then. The scene now is very poor musically in comparison, no matter what you are into.

My first all nighter there back in 1976 ...

As for Nev Wherry ... R.I.P ..

Agreed.

It was the perfect underground venue.

I remember seeing Sasha play there around the mid 90's as well as all the early GC DJ's - Sister Bliss, Boy George etc.

Sheffield was a fantastic place to be in the height of the 90's 'clubbing' (hate that word) heyday.

Good times.

Probably The Roxy, where Carling Academy is now.

I have never, and probably never will, set foot in a Nightclub, they're noisy, full of c words, and rip you off on the price of drinks (a bit like most of the Pubs in Town)
If, as you say, you have never been in a nightclub how can you comment on what they are like? Donkeymans on Pitsmoor was a very refined place, drinks cheap, intellectual conversation and no profane language at all.

Just been reading through the thread and although you lost me around Roxy's :hihi: I can't believe no-one's mentioned the Mojo Club, people came in coachloads from all over the north and midlands to the all-nighters or the Esquire .. which surely must have been the first 'proper' clubs in Sheffield, other than the Club 60, maybe?

Nods familiarly at the names in #103 ... and add the Penny Farthing, that was a bit posey though at the time.

Remember Pippys shop? Parallell to the moor? That road,,, up near the top...

I would have to say Republic on Mondays - Rammed every week! College get together, best nights I have ever had there, seriously out of this world!
Birlins on a Wednesday - drink as much as you want, cost nowt!
Pulse and Vouge on Thursdays and Sat - 4 Bud for a fiver in Hotshots
Republic on the Fridays
Birlins again on the Sunday

The leadmill on a wednesday (80's) and thursday (60's and 70's) used to be superb nights, and I grabbed many a granny at Josephines.

You can't forget the Friday night disco's at the Marquis in bamford either (as much as you'd like to!!! :hihi:)

ok I was joking about the Marquis, but while I think - the Roundhouse down at Ponds Forge was a quality night when they first started doing the old bus stop 70's nights.

I went to Bed a few times and just didn't think much of it, sorry! Only things I went to there were Drum and Bass Arena to see the hugely overrated Goldie (yawn) and the vomit inducing Hed Kandi. Can't say I miss the giant cathedral of commercial dance that went by the name of Republic either!

Occasions and Palias were far better, back in the early (dare I say it?) 1990s

I sound really old

The palais on london road before it was bed and music factory they had washing machines to sit on in the chill out room when you had finished waving your white gloves and whistles about!!
what about berlins when they used to spin a massive wheel for the drinks offers!! oh bring back 1994/5!!!

As an old un I read through this theme with interest, and realised that past and present did not really mean that because of the age opf the contributers, only one mention of The Mojo Pete Stringfellow's first club renowned throught the North of England and not one mention of the Fiesta the largest night club in the UK at the time of its construction. What about Shades on Ecclesall Road now Napoleon's Casino run by the infamous Max Omar and Baileys on Bank street although I don't think that was its orignal name it was the first night club to open up in the city centre. and then there was the Lacarno on London Road compleat with the palm trees. Now thats the past.
