View Full Version : Forum Characters
discodown 09-08-2008, 13:29 Been thinking about this quite a lot recently. I've reached the conclusion there are posters on here who have trancended being a mere poster. These people are the forum characters.
They, because of how they've started out posting, now have to keep that guise up and continue posting in the same vein. Why? Because they have fans. There are people on here who are purely a character. Two dimensional and boxed into a forum persona they probably don't like or are bored of but can't break out of because they partly like the attention and applaus and partly don't want to disappoint the people who like them and partly because they've become so entrenched withion that persona can't get away from it.
If all this sounds like me being bitter its not. I'm interested. Interested how these characters behave. Interested that sometimes you can see they don't want to be that character too much but feel forced to do so.
Come to think of it. Maybe I need a self imposed forum holiday i'm clearly thinking too much about it.
horribleblob 09-08-2008, 13:34 Sounds like hard work - keeping up a false or exaggerated online persona.
Jabberwocky 09-08-2008, 13:39 Name names!!!!
I guess I could be classed as a character, albeit a flawed one, but I simply dont have the imagination to make anything up and if I did, after almost three years Id be an emotional shell by now.
One way of telling if someones not on the level persona wise is to see how open they are, its easier to lie or make up a character if there isnt too much to remember.
The "Real" people on here are open books, I dont have many things I dont tell about and I even have a facebook with just about everything on it.
Ive said it before and I know many others have too-- WYSIWYG. I wouldnt have the brains to make myself up, I dont think anyone could be that sick :D
What worries me is that some of these characters might actually be real.
Not Jabbers, the thought that his persona on here mirrors the rest of his life is somewhat comforting.
Sometimes people are funny, but sometimes it gets boring seeing the same ones constantly trying to make jokes, especially if their trying too hard to be funny.
Suffragette1 09-08-2008, 13:52 I would say these Forummers are more caricatures than characters.
discodown 09-08-2008, 14:00 Is there a difference?
Theres plenty of characters on here, all of them are good for a laugh.
Even the *cough* serious ones *cough*
Suffragette1 09-08-2008, 14:08 Is there a difference?
Of course.
discodown 09-08-2008, 14:09 Of course.Kindly explain what the difference is
EdnaKrabappe 09-08-2008, 14:18 I'd agree that there are. And just like the best characters, some of them even have catchphrases.
slimsid2000 09-08-2008, 14:20 All the 'characters' get banned. It is part of the John Majorisation of Sheffield Forum.

A caricature is an exaggeration/distortion of a character. Here is a definition I found online:

here (http://dictionary.reverso.net/english-definitions/caricature)There are no caricatures i'm aware of on the forum. Merely characters

Personas who are an exaggeration of their real selves? I suspect the people you consider to be characters are in fact caricatures.

partypants 09-08-2008, 16:47 Well poo. I came in thinking this would be an awesome gossip thread, but it's just debating definitions. Bah

That’s all a bit deep for a Saturday afternoon but I get where you are coming from.
Alastair 09-08-2008, 17:22 Slimsid is obviously a created character, but what's his creators real ID? :)
StarSparkle 09-08-2008, 17:25 Slimsid is obviously a created character, but what's his creators real ID? :)

Agent Orange 09-08-2008, 17:38 I'm a character :P
Jabberwocky 09-08-2008, 17:40 Thats a thought... Characters or merely high post counts?
All the people I can think of as being characters have relatively high post counts so theyre always around... Maybe the characters are just more obvious than the non characters who dont post so much...?
Savannah2 09-08-2008, 17:43 I'm a character :P
Yes you are, AO. A nice one if I may say so. :)
CottonTop 09-08-2008, 17:51 Well poo. I came in thinking this would be an awesome gossip thread, but it's just debating definitions. Bah
So did I....such a shame. I could use a little entertainment on a Saturday afternoon because, frankly, watching Spongebob with the munchkins just isn't cutting it anymore.
Agent Orange 09-08-2008, 17:55 Yes you are, AO. A nice one if I may say so. :)
Thanks... think you are in the minority :D
shanes teeth 09-08-2008, 17:57 I think people should use the forum in many ways-to be serious ,funny,to explore ideas ,to try out diferent points of view,to get reactions from others and to play devils advocate. The characters are the ones who use all the above in equal measures.
horribleblob 09-08-2008, 17:59 Well poo. I came in thinking this would be an awesome gossip thread, but it's just debating definitions. Bah
Patience, partypants. We'll get round to the gossip all in good time. ;)
Thanks... think you are in the minority :D
Aaaah - who needs another big, flobbedy hug then??
(HUG)
By the way, if you're still down in the dumps on Monday, I will be able to deliver the hug in person!! :heyhey:
Savannah2 09-08-2008, 18:01 Thanks... think you are in the minority :D
Just from personal experience. :) I fail to see why I would be the 'minority' though. :suspect: ;)
waxonwaxoff 09-08-2008, 19:17 I think people are too easily offended by the forum characters. They are just people on the end of a computer. It dosent matter if they are the same in real life or not. If they are gobby on here and shy and quiet in real life then so be it and visa versa. We are all on here for the same reasons, to enjoy a good read on whatever closely relates to our interests. Forum characters will also differ person to person. They may stand out to you because you find their post funny or infuriating, others will barely notice them. I quite like the idea that people may be different from real life on here. I like to think that the people often left in the corner in real life, get it off the chests and stand out for a change on here.
pattricia 09-08-2008, 19:27 Am I a character ? I talk a lot, and am very confident. But of course confidence is simply that quiet, assured feeling you have before you fall flat on your face!:lol:
*carrie* 06-09-2008, 19:14 Hmm.... something to think about I suppose....
Alastair 06-09-2008, 19:29 All the 'characters' get banned. It is part of the John Majorisation of Sheffield Forum.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Him. He's a made up character, or should that be caricature?
Always 2 sides to every character on this forum a nice side and a horrible side
The latter usually shines through but the former have only ever seen it in a handful of people on this forum
Hmm.... something to think about I suppose....
I think you have a lovely side to you
Think you should take another picture for your avatar
Bit like playboy calander a new picture in a swimsuit or bikini every month :)
